Yes, I am on Facebook.. but I consider it a huge waste of time... I deactivated my account after a while...

I don't think it's possible for anyone, no matter how wonderful they are, to have hundreds of friends.

Does anyone actually care about the mundane details of my life? I don't think so.

The old Internet is quickly fading away.. now everything is linked to YouTube, FaceBook, and Twitter... AJAX technology is everywhere and is very annoying at time (that's what enables those popups that appear when you accidentally mouse over a link in an article)...

I guess if I were up on the latest whiz bang gizmo technology, I wouldn't feel so alienated... but I'm not...

Never post your email address on a site that is open to the public, that is unless you want the Spam Bot's email harvesters to grab it. I've edited the above to show how to if you "must" post your email publicly

As for Facebook, I have an account for friends and family that I keep private. I also do not use my real name, I always use a pseudonym with everything on the net.

Simple rule, everything you post on the net is there forever and it is indexed, data mined with absolutely no controls.

The net is evolving quickly and we' soon be at web 3.0/The Cloud/The One whereby data defines itself by it's context with many to many relationships (whereas at the minute we have one to many, and in the distant past we had one to one)

In my opinion you shouldn't shy way from it, unless your old (like Mr. P old =P) it's going to play a big part in your life, better learning as you go than catching up after.

Yes the net is evolving, the industry is pushing away from applications loading up on your individual PC and moving more to a "subscription" service. This way they cut down on the cost/overhead of actually "shipping" a product. You just subscribe to a service and they have a consistent revenue stream. Which this also cuts down significantly on cost of support.

It's rather interesting how we're moving back to the design of the old mainframes with centralized computing ya know.

Personally I find "twitter" and wall posts the most irritating and useless concept EVER devised, with crap like -

"I woke up and having coffee"
"I'm doing laundry"
"the sun is out and I'm taking a walk"
blah, blah, blah, blah!

Are peoples lives so insanely boring they have to "tweet" or post every bloody thing they're doing???????

OK, let's "tweet" or post updates on Facebook with -

"I woke up"
"I'm scratching my ball's"
"I'm taking when hell of a good dump"

People GET REAL and GET A LIFE!!!!!!!! Go talk to someone, walk down the street and say good morning to a stranger. Hell you see a bum on the street take them to breakfast and actually talk to them, go to the library and read a bloody book!!!!!!!
etc.
etc.
etc.

iPhones, texting, yadda, yadda, yadda get your nose out of them and actually talk/interact with someone and STOP posting every little detail of your life and do something useful ya know!!!

How about you do something useful with your time rather than posting pointlessly on a debating board, oh, you're wasting your time better than others, ofcourse  now stop with the silliness less ya start to seem hypocritical.

I have a facebook account but only one person from this site is 'friends' with me on there. This is because only people I know and have met in person (and trust) are ones that I 'accept', aside from the one member from here. I have classmates and co-workers (both present and former) and family there. So in all (and I add to it daily), I do, in real life, have 296 friends.

I use it as a way to keep in touch and network (which is a huge plus for me given my career choice). If people don't care what I post on my status updates, then so be it. I don't really care what they think. I post whatever I feel I need to say, regardless of importance. Sometimes I publish poetry or other things. It is actually the best way for my (new) dad and I to communicate and keep in touch. He gets to see all I am up to (& vice versa) and his grandkids (my kids), my family, etc. I am also friends with all my (new) extended relatives and I am able to get to know them all now, even though most of them live out of state. I don't get out much beyond my retail store (I'm here 7-days/week), family, and school right now, so this tool makes it so much easier to keep up with everyone.

Facebook was the way I found out that one of my chef instructors had died from a heart attack this past Monday (funeral was thursday). I just saw him and talked to him last Thursday before leaving campus. It was all over the school Facebook network 36 hours before we got an email from the main office.

Do some people post stupid & pointless stuff? Yes. However I also don't take everything so seriously either. I just move on without additional thought. Sometimes I post random things on mine just to see what peoples' reactions are. Hell, I made a major announcement just this past summer, but did it via status change on facebook (and posted lyrics from a song) before telling anyone personally to see who was paying attention. Lots of fun with that one!

So whenever you meet people irl what do you talk about if not the movie you went to see the night before or lunch dates you've had?

1. If I am having lunch with someone, it generally means I am close enough to them to care about their lives. Even so, we usually talk about more personal things than banalities. Either way, I wouldn't yell out my recent activities such as "Taking a shower, then going to work out" to the whole restaurant; which, depending on your number of friends and closeness to them, is similar to posting such drivel on FB.

2. There is a difference between updating your real life friends with "what's new", and bragging. Or at least there should be, or you may need better friends.

This board helps me keep up with current events better than any newspaper or TV. Especially because much of the media is biased to the left, and doesn't even cover many of the stories I read here. Some of our members are like researchers. Or hadn't you noticed? In addition, debating keeps the mind sharp. Hardly a waste of time.

I agree. I've a facebook, but limited to those I allow in, which is not from messageboards. Limited to friends and family. I've been burned enough from forums to block all. Mind you, that doesn't mean I don't like you, much less want to converse with you. Just not crossing over between real and online.

Oh I know, I don't think it's a waste prime at all, tbh I don't think any Internet sites are a waste of time, but when people start bing chosey about what *is* a watse of time for others (because they consider it a waste themselves) for someones online life I find it pretty funny (which is what my post was referring too)

If anyone is surprised by the above video they haven't been paying attention.

You must be prepared to have ANYTHING you say in public held against your name, be that something you say on this website, on a social site like facebook, or on some underground porn den etc. When you say it on the Internet it is public. Simple fact is simple.

My grand daughters are on FB too, and every once in awhile I'll have to reprimand them for using a foul word or two. They are 11 and 13 and feeling their oats, so to speak. But I don't want my relatives and friends see that my young grands are swearing or talking inappropriately, so I have to step in and squelch such behaviors before it gets out of control....

I don't like social networks for the most part however, facebook allows a person to setup there account to recieve Private Messages to there cell phone and respond back, so I can see the advantage because you don't have to be home or online to chit chat and you don't have to give out your phone number to a net friend.
