can you recommend a cheap, basic porn filter. I dont need one with a bunch of bells and whistles, just block porn. If it blocks malware and spyware, fine that is good

but cant find a good one that isnt either too expensive or too ineffective

help?

Not going to find one that work worth a shit and the ones you do pay for aren't any better, there will always be a way around them and not hard at all.

Best advice is explain the rules to the kids, use a tracker to monitor where they go and if they break the rules they suffer the consequences

Martin - this for you or for others? There is accountability software which sends a list of URLs visited to somebody...

Or...unplug the puter. :)

Martin,

Setup a free OpenDNS account and use their free URL filtering config. It works like a charm.

You're chasing your tail and it's a false sense of security if you think you can keep up with blocking the zillions of "offensive" sites that are out there and continually popping up.

I am chasing nothing. The OpenDNS URL filtering tool uses a constantly updated database for sites that are categorized and you can choose categories to allow, block, or warn against. You set it up once and the filtering is handled on DNS request by URL.

Are there going to be some sites that it misses? Sure. No URL filtering tool is perfect, but this is an excellent way to get to what Martin wants to do, and it is free.

Again this is a false sense of security for it won't cut them all out, not even close. Plus there are easy ways around filtering like using a proxy.

My advice still stands and that is you explain the rules to the kids, log the url's the go to and if they break the rules they pay the consequences.

You can also block proxies using the URL filtering databases at OpenDNS. It isn't perfect, but it will serve to do most of what Martin wants.

Then there's no filter than you can install that'll work, because you know the password, and if you already feel that looking at porn is wrong, then you know it's wrong to you while you're in the act of looking for it. Nothing we could do would change that point.
