I've got a little time off, finally, and thought I'd share some of the pics & videos with you all of my various jobs around Alaska this Summer.

Some were taken with my HTC Hero phone, so I apologize in advance for the quality.

This first batch is from Ketchikan and surrounding area. It's a rainforest & we had a couple of days of nice weather.

This first pic was taken on the ferry on our way from Ketchikan to Prince of Wales island.

We stayed a few nights in Craig, on Prince of Wales island. The weather never lifted for us to complete our mission - so we never even got on board the helicopter to get on top that mountain.

Cool rooftop foliage, I wondered how many leaks he's got going so far.

A Sitka Blacktail deer, I was bored and decided to see how close I could get to her. I got a LOT closer than I thought I'd be able to, this was taken with my phone & was about 15' away.

These deer are everywhere down there and are the size of a medium sized dog.

This is one badass ferry, it was just completed right before we arrived down there.

KETCHIKAN, Alaska (Aug. 07, 2009) The Office of Naval Research E-Craft, an experimental high-speed transformable hull form vessel, is under construction at Alaska Ship and Drydock in Ketchikan, Alaska. The E-Craft is scheduled for delivery in April 2010 and will provide the Navy with valuable data on the performance of this unique hull form in a challenging environment while serving as a ferry connecting Anchorage, Alaska, to the remote area of Port Mackenzie.

“It’s an omnivore. It’s not optimized for any one task, but it has a wide range of tasks it can do, and that’s what makes it useful. It can work in deep seas, it can work in rough waters, it can break ice, it can work in shallow waters and go up to the beach. There’s no other ship in the world that can do that.” — Lew Madden, Ferry Co-inventor

A loaded barge arriving in Ketchikan from Seattle. This is how the vast majority of goods arrives to Alaska from the Lower 48.

The airport is on the other side there, on an island. This island was to be connected to Ketchikan by a bridge about 5 miles to the left of this picture - the very controversial "Bridge to Nowhere". So everyone has to take a ferry to get to town from the airport.

Looking at the site from the beach - we needed to get to that uppermost peak in the clouds there. I think we nabbed 12 hours of overtime sitting on the beach, shooting icebergs with my co-worker's AR-10 waiting on the clouds to clear.

Before dropping us off and heading back to Yakutat, our pilot (who was from Seattle) took us on a recon mission around the area to see how many critters were in the area. Look at the highways from the local bears in the sand... we kept a good lookout but didn't see any. Surprising, considering all those tracks.

This was the local Ranger that we were fixing the radio repeater for. She lives in NYC and works here during the Summer. We fixed her inverter for her at the Ranger Station, which allowed her to get her internet working again without running generators. She was pretty cool and glad for a few hours worth of company.

We got caught by cloud coverage that formed around the mountain we were working on. We spent about 5 hours waiting, then a small hole opened up and we could see the beach. We lifted off and hauled ass through it and made it out of the weather... none of us were looking forward to spending a night in the helicopter.

A little R-44 Alaska State Trooper helicopter. Last year, one of the Trooper pilots was sitting on the tarmac and for some reason, ripped the stick all the way back as he was warming up. The main rotor angled down and chopped the tail completely off. He's still flying it after a rather expensive rebuild, but it makes the most God-awful racket when he engages the transmission... I wouldn't fly in it.

The next pictures were taken 3 weeks ago, on Kodiak Island. We sailed on an 86' ship from Homer to Kodiak. It was a 12 hour cruise, and we had a hell of a lot of fun on this job.

The ship used to be a Tuna boat, and Maritime fitted it with a helodeck. We started out with their Bell 407 (God, I love that machine!) for the heavy lifting, then we swapped out with the Long Ranger, pictured here.

LOL ..... I was reading this, Abbey, and somehow missed the "glove" part of foxglove until I saw the word flowers. Had to go back and reread....I thought you were referring to NT as being a fox....and I was mentally agreeing and then heard that scratching sound a needle on a record makes because I had to backup and reconcile "fox - flowers???"! How funny!!!

I was down in Ketchikan at the hotel, and uploaded pictures to my facebook & I put up a picture of those intending to ask my girlfriend (who is from that area) what they were... A very young moose calf without his mother... she must have gotten killed by a vehicle, because this little fella ran down the highway for about 4 miles and almost got hit by traffic a dozen times before finally running off into the woods. He was too young to be solo, he won't make it through the winter.

This was very entertaining. I was fixing the groomer (you drag it behind a 4-wheeler to smooth out the runway) when my girlfriend came down from the Lodge and told me to come "help feed the babies". We walked down to the river and she threw in a chunk of salmon eggs, and thousands of baby King Salmon fry swarmed on it. I spent 3 hours or more doing this and went through 10 pounds of salmon eggs.

Thanks, Dan. The Lab's name is Truffles, she's one of the smartest dogs I've ever met. Her only downfall is she likes to go walkabout here around the neighborhood and not too long ago I had to go bail her ass out of jail. A Wasilla cop stopped, lured her into the back of his cop car, and took her to the pound... $120 to get her out.

But she's a great dog.

That photo perhaps is a Banana slug since I found out that they also inhabit some of Alaska. Not all are bright yellow.

Read this. (Wikipedia is the source)

Ariolimax columbianus (http://www.debatepolicy.com/w/index.php?title=Ariolimax_columbianus&action=edit&redlink=1) is native to the forest (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Forest) floors along North America's Pacific coastal coniferous rainforest belt (including redwood forests) which stretches from Southeastern Alaska (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Alaska) to Santa Cruz, California (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Santa_Cruz,_California).
Several discontinuous populations do also occur in forested slopes of the coastal and traverse mountain ranges south of Santa Cruz as far south as Ventura County (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Ventura_County), with a tiny, isolated population located in Palomar Mountain State Park (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Palomar_Mountain_State_Park) within the Palomar Mountain Range (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Palomar_Mountain_Range) in San Diego County, California (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/San_Diego_County,_California). The Palomar Mountains have lush Sierra Nevada-like coniferous forests and black oak woodlands unlike the surrounding semiarid lands of inland San Diego County and mark the southernmost population of banana slugs. The slugs were rediscovered several years ago along Doane Creek, part of the Lower Doane Valley/Lower French Trail. This population is believed to be a relict (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Relict) from the Pleistocene epoch when the climate was cooler and wetter.
Small, isolated populations also occur east of the Pacific Coast such as in the inland coniferous rainforests of British Columbia (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/British_Columbia)'s Columbia Mountains (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Columbia_Mountains) (interior wet-belt), just west of the Canadian Rockies (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Canadian_Rockies), and have been seen at lower elevations near creeks and damp areas of Mount Revelstoke National Park (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Mount_Revelstoke_National_Park). Small populations of banana slugs have also been seen along creek and damp areas of the western slopes of the Sierra Nevada (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Sierra_Nevada_(U.S.)) mountains to the north of Yosemite National Park (http://www.debatepolicy.com/wiki/Yosemite_National_Park) in California. Slug densities in these outlying areas in the Columbia Mountains, Sierra Nevada Mountains, and areas south of Santa Cruz are low compared to densities in the coastal coniferous rainforest belt and are rather restricted to damp areas near creeks, ravines, and gullies.[7] (http://www.debatepolicy.com/#cite_note-BIO-7) This population is probably also a relict from the Pleistocene epoch.
