Representative Giffords shot in Arizona, gunman held
Reuters
WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Representative Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head while holding a public event in Tucson, Fox News and National Public Radio reported on Saturday.
Fox said 11 other people were shot when an unidentified gunman ran up and began shooting indiscriminately as Giffords addressed supporters.
Giffords was shot point blank in the head, Fox said.

The network said the gunman was in custody.
Giffords, 40, a Democrat, is married to U.S. astronaut Mark Kelly. She took office in January 2007, emphasizing issues such as immigration reform, embryonic stem-cell research, alternative energy sources and a higher minimum wage.

Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and six others died after a gunman opened fire at a public event on Saturday, the Pima County, Ariz., sheriff's office confirms.
The 40-year-old Democrat, who was re-elected to her third term in November, was hosting a "Congress on Your Corner" event at a Safeway in northwest Tucson when a gunman ran up and started shooting, according to Peter Michaels, news director of Arizona Public Media.
At least three other people, including members of her staff, were injured. Giffords was transported to University Medical Center in Tucson.

Reports are now saying she has died .... I think she was a "Blue Dog" Democrat ... and used to be a Republican. Heard there are multiple fatalities
She was just re-elected .... beat out a Tea Party candidate. I think she was supporting a 5% reduction in pay for legislators.
This Safeway is the one next to my daughter's ex-husband's house and I was calling frantically this morning to make sure they were not at the Town Hall meeting. Ex-son-in-law is a teacher and I could just see him taking her to the Town Hall meeting as a civics lesson.
Thankfully, they are home.
We were all very freaked out about this until we located everyone we knew to make sure everyone was safe.

While it doesn't sound good, NPR has retracted:
http://news.yahoo.com/s/yblog_theticket/20110108/ts_yblog_theticket/report-congresswoman-giffords-shot
Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot and possibly killed Saturday. NPR previously reported that Giffords was dead, but has since retracted that. The local sheriff, Clarence Dupnick, has told MSNBC that she is still alive and a hospital spokesman has also told MSNBC that Giffords is alive and in surgery. She was hosting a public event at a Safeway grocery store on the north side of Tucson.
NPR says Giffords and 6 others were killed. According to Dupnick, 5 people were killed and 6 wounded.
The motives of the attacker, who was detained on the scene and taken into custody, are at this point unknown. Fox is reporting that the gunman "ran up and began shooting indiscriminately as Giffords addressed supporters." According to the New York Times, the Tuscon Citizen is reporting that Giffords was shot at close range.
Witnesses say that the gunman was in his "late teens or early twenties." An eyewitness who contacted Gawker says that he was young, mid-to-late 20s, white clean-shaven with short hair and wearing dark clothing." According to their source, he looked like a "fringe character."
Giffords was first elected represent Arizona's 8th district in 2006. She was married to astronaut Mike Kelly.

As an aside, the women who was shot talked about this image during the midterms and said she felt uncomfortable about seeing her name in crosshairs and the message that could convay to some people. To a conservative her name in cross hairs means she's targeted to be voted out of office. To a liberal moonbat it means she is to be taken out. The conservatives failed to get their target. A liberal moonbat didn't.

First off, I am thankful for you Sassy that you and yours are well.
Secondly, Gabby if you are honestly going to blame this on the prevalence of guns then you really are a fool. A gun is a tool, a very destructive one at that. However, banning all guns would have never stopped this. The attacker would have just aquired another destructive tool to do the job.
Thirdly, my heart goes out to the family of the 9 year olg girl. I have 3 children myself. To think this could happen to them...
Lastly, Representative Giffords, you will be in my prayers. Let God's will be done.

Did you read that poster? It talks about nothing more than unseating a democrat in an election, nothing more. Anyone with a stitch of honesty sees that FACT and will not make such moronic ties.
There were tagets over other districts as well. Does that mean anything bad that happens in those districts is Sarah Palin's fault?

The man who did this was a liberal moonbat. He's probably never seen the poster. He went after someone that wasn't liberal enough for him.
In the next few days we will be hearing about his traumatic childhood and how he was a loner. The media will make a victim of him in some way. If no conservative ties they will play up his victim status or drop the story entirely.

The shooter is NOT representative of the actions or intent of most conservatives. Just because you don't like someone doesn't mean you want to kill them.

So tell me BoogerMan, where does the violent rhetoric in the anti-Health Care debate come from? Which side carries the guns and makes the violent threats?
During the midterm elections, Giffords was opposed by a Tea Party supported candidate, Jesse Kelly. During the campaign, Sarah Palin made a statement that said that politicians like Giffords needed to be removed "by whatever methods available." (By the way, isn't it strange to references to Giffords and the race vs. Kelly have disappeared from Palin's websites?)
At one point during the campaign, Kelly sponsored a campaign event called "Get on Target for Victory in November Help remove Gabrielle Giffords from office Shoot a fully automatic M16 with Jesse Kelly." In the event, you made a contribution and got to shoot a weapon with the candidate.
Obviously, the suspect in the case is mentally deranged. So why did he have a weapon? Is it because every American, no matter how sick they are, has the right to own a gun?

From the AP followup about the shooting:
Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik described the gunman as mentally unstable and possibly acting with an accomplice. He said Giffords was among 13 people wounded in the melee that killed six people, including a 9-year-old girl, an aide for the Democratic lawmaker and U.S. District Judge John Roll, who had just stopped by to see his friend Giffords after celebrating Mass. Dupnik said the rampage ended only after two people tackled the gunman.
The sheriff blamed the vitriolic political rhetoric that has consumed the country, much of it centered in Arizona.
"When you look at unbalanced people, how they respond to the vitriol that comes out of certain mouths about tearing down the government. The anger, the hatred, the bigotry that goes on in this country is getting to be outrageous," he said. "And unfortunately, Arizona, I think, has become the capital. We have become the mecca for prejudice and bigotry."
Giffords expressed similar concern, even before the shooting. In an interview after her office was vandalized, she referred to the animosity against her by conservatives, including Sarah Palin's decision to list Giffords' seat as one of the top "targets" in the midterm elections.
"For example, we're on Sarah Palin's targeted list, but the thing is, that the way that she has it depicted has the crosshairs of a gun sight over our district. When people do that, they have to realize that there are consequences to that action," Giffords said in an interview with MSNBC.

I'm waiting to see the outcries from the anti-gun whackos when some guy wanders in to a McDonalds and kills a few people with a rock, or a baseball bat, or a knife, or perhaps even with his bare hands.
BTW, gun ownership IS restricted...for instance convicted felons aren't legally allowed to possess one. One of these days, you might develop the mental capacity to understand that you have nothing to fear from the law-abiding gun owner.

The current government is directly to blame for any animosity towards its members. With all the back room-after hours-wheeling and dealing to pass legislation that by their own admission they had no clue what it contained, our congress is fortunate that the whole lot of them weren't dragged into the streets and beaten within an inch of their lives. They heap insult and injury onto decent tax paying citizens and act shocked when people react in an unfriendly manner. Pelosi, Queen of Delusion, is still yapping that they accomplished all these great deeds when it's the farthest thing from the truth.

Gabby ... I have an extensive library (I spend all my "sin" money on books and not drugs or alcohol) .... my father-in-law has a 2,000 sq. ft. library in his house, my son-in-law has two libraries in his house .... we are all conservatives. For you to make statements that only liberals are avid readers shows your lack of intelligence and sounds like left-wing talking points.
As for Palin creating an atmosphere of anger ... this shows just how far off base you are about your Tea Party beliefs. Tea Party people, and conservatives in general, were angry long before we ever heard of Palin. We were angry about the spending spree that Washington was on.
I'll bet this kid lived at home with his parents and sat in his room 24/7 smoking pot and dreaming about a socialist society. I personally don't believe this is politically motivated ... I think he's just a nut job who knew killing a politician would make him famous just like the nut jobs who tried to, or did, kill other politicians. The Congresswoman was having an event that was close to his home so he took advantage of it.
As for carrying guns ... I believe the Congresswoman also carries a gun.

Like Gabby the NY Times can not wait to score cheap political points
While Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) fights for her life in a Tucson, Arizona, hospital, liberal media members continue to point fingers of blame for Saturday's tragic shooting spree at prominent conservatives such as Sarah Palin, Rush Limbaugh, and Glenn Beck.
Jumping on this pathetic bandwagon Saturday was New York Times columnist Paul Krugman:
We don’t have proof yet that this was political, but the odds are that it was. She’s been the target of violence before. And for those wondering why a Blue Dog Democrat, the kind Republicans might be able to work with, might be a target, the answer is that she’s a Democrat who survived what was otherwise a GOP sweep in Arizona, precisely because the Republicans nominated a Tea Party activist. (Her father says that “the whole Tea Party” was her enemy.) And yes, she was on Sarah Palin’s infamous “crosshairs” list. [...]
You know that Republicans will yell about the evils of partisanship whenever anyone tries to make a connection between the rhetoric of Beck, Limbaugh, etc. and the violence I fear we’re going to see in the months and years ahead. But violent acts are what happen when you create a climate of hate. And it’s long past time for the GOP’s leaders to take a stand against the hate-mongers.
The Left are making a big issue out of the fact that Palin targeted Giffords as a vulnerable Democrat last year, but Markos Moulitsas did the same thing in June 2008:
As we've seen these past couple of weeks, we've got a problem in our caucus -- while we have been busy stocking up on more Democrats, fact is the good ones are being swamped by the bad ones. [...]
If your local congresscritter is one of the bad apples, start organizing locally. Plug into existing networks or start your own. Begin looking for primary challengers. Do the groundwork. Don't expect help from the local party establishment, they'll close ranks. So tap into alternate infrastructures. Find allies in the progressive movement. If your local shitty Democrat is anti-union, approach the unions. They'd love to send this kind of message. If the Democrat is anti-choice, work with the women's groups. If the Democrat is anti-environment ... you get the idea. If you have access to professional networks and money, start organizing those.
Of course, this takes more than just bitching about your frustrations on a blog, damning a whole party for the actions of a minority more scared of Mr. 28% than of protecting the Constitution they swore to protect. This takes hard work. But now is the time to start.
And while people like me will focus on the task at hand this year, it won't be long after Election Day that we'll start looking at the 2010 map, looking for those great primary challengers.
Who to primary? Well, I'd argue that we can narrow the target list by looking at those Democrats who sold out the Constitution last week. I've bolded members of the Blue Dogs for added emphasis.
Giffords was one of the House representatives Markos bolded (h/t HillBuzz):

A "raging liberal"? Where in the hell did you get that from? I have not read anything about his political views one side or the other. You're the only presumptuous wacko in this thread. And what other political person puts out an elimination list marked with gun sites, to appeal to her gun-crazy fan base?
Allow me to educate you Gabby
The irresponsible propagandists posing as journalists at the Associated Press are going to a frequently visited well tonight -- the one where any violence committed against a Democrat or liberal must somehow and in some way be due to a climate of hostility created solely by conservatives, Republicans, and more recently, Tea Party activists.
Never mind that the person who allegedly shot Arizona Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords and murdered several others, Jared Loughner, is reportedly a marijuana-using loner who lists the Communist Manifesto and Mein Kampf as among his favorite books, or that the most recent items which could bee seen as potential incitements to violence against Giffords have come from the left, in response to her refusal to back Nancy Pelosi for Minority Leader in the House just days ago.
Specifically:
•Here's a link (partial screen grab here for when it comes down; corroborated by Tyler Durden at Zero Hedge) to Laughner's YouTube profile.
•Here's a screen grab of a DailyKos post from Thursday entitled "My CongressWOMAN voted against Nancy Pelosi And is mow DEAD to Me!" Charming. Michelle Malkin notes that the post has been pulled. The post's author has left a comment stating: "i now am FULL of guilt after writing this diary. i am a proud atheist, so pray for yourself, not me. i don't need prayers, nor want them."
•It didn't take me long to find this comment at another "progressive" forum, where proprietor "Booman" travels into the realm of desiring thuggery: "Here's a list of disloyal jerkoff Democrats who didn't vote for Pelosi as Minority Leader ... I hope Pelosi crushes these idiots and makes their lives miserable. I'm not kidding."

No one is "blaming" anything on Palin.
Hold it.
I am.
Palin is a second-rate intellect who never would have had a chance at politics if she didn't know how to give the bottom-feeders what they want. She knows they want to feel like patriots and real men so she tosses-out the gun metaphors; "target," "reload," "aim." She may not have pulled the trigger but she's responsible for this outrage because of her deliberate effort to exploit the ignorance of the gun cult.

The wit of your twisting of my name has left me giggling in a 3rd grade playground kind of way.
I note your lack of a single link to your claims, Gabby. Why is that?
What violent threats have been made? The only thing I see is that you and your liberal buddies want to take a terrible event and turn it into something you can use as a bludgeon based on your personally held views of people who believe differently than you. You want to push a stereotype of conservatives created by liberal loons as a truth. That dog wont hunt.
Where are the links to TPM, ThinkProgress, Common Dreams, et al? No reasonable person other than the witless mouth breathers at sites like those are going to make the allegations that you seem to be parroting here.
Every American DOES have the right to own a gun. Like it or not, the 2nd amendment exists and you really don't have a leg to stand on.
The nut that did this is the sole person who holds responsibility for the reprehensible actions undertaken in Tucson yesterday and no amount of liberal frothy mouthed sickness should be introduced to try and change the fact that something sick happened there into a political weapon.

After enough exposure to rhetoric like little joe's, gabby's, and psycho's, I am starting to believe that these three are actually employees of the DP board; or perhaps they are all one person. His/their function is to increase the volume of posts from the real members, by making outrageous and completely fatuous announcements on an issue that comes up. He/they might even be moderate or conservative posters who are calculating what statements will generate the most responses. Nearly every board I am on, seems to have at least one such, but never many. Their "style" and technique is boringly repetitive, and it is often hard to tell the difference between them, except for the name in the upper left corner of their posts.
I can imagine nothing else that would account for the baffling level of stupidity that consistently shows in his/their posts, nor the blind obtuseness that characterizes his/their "replies" that get repeatedly refuted or debunked every time they are posted, yet keep reappearing as "new" assertions in later threads.
Basically, no one can be as ignorant and intellectually void as these "three" profess to be, and still be able to lace their shoes or make correct change in the Safeway aisle. The only possible conclusion is, that they are faking it.

In a live news conference, still going now, two of the doctors who operated on the congresswoman, said they are cautiously optimistic - similar to earlier reports.
They also said that the bullet did not go from one side of the brain to the other (which could have been very destructive), but "traversed the entire length of the brain, on the left side, from back to front".
Sounds like she was shot in the back of the head. Either she saw the shooter coming with the gun, and turned to flee just before she was shot; or she had finished her speech and had turned away to go to the back of the area and never knew anything was amiss before the bullet hit her.

Recall that six other people were killed, including a nine-year-old girl, and a dozen or more wounded.

I heard she was shot in the temple and the bullet exited the forehead. the guy who kept pressure to the wound is credited with her still being alive
Yes, the bastard who did this should be put to death
But we both know if he gets the death sentence he will do life on death row

Sorry, but it's just too much of a stretch to believe that people who actually believe the stuff these three (one?) come up with, could be real humans. Gabby fits the stereotype of "dumb blonde with zero sense, memory, or accountability" a little too perfectly. It makes more sense that she(he) is simply playing up the stereotype, like Hillary faking a southern twang. And little joe can be counted on to come down on the wrong side of EVERY issue, EVERY time, no matter how completely silly that side is on some issues. Again, it's just too perfect. Nobody that stupid could possibly be a real human.
I'm afraid that we've been played for fools for a long time by this person making up the gabby/joe/psycho characters. And successfully - look how much bandwidth has been wasted over the months/yeas he has been playing this game, as people reply and try to explain things to them. Anyone so completely impervious to common sense, has to be faking it. Or they would not be able to dress themselves in the morning, nor put food into the right orfice on their heads at meals without assistance.
The gabby/joe/psycho personae have been faked here for years. And many of us have fallen for it... probably because we WANTED to believe that such complete loons exist.
Has any of you ever known (that is, met face to face and become familiar with) anyone who even comes close to the senseless moonbattery these "three" exhibit with EVERY post?
Not possible. You've been had.
Actually such people do exist. I have met a few in real life that think just like these three. We have had others here as well, they just haven't stuck around. The dark lord would not be in office if a large portion of the country were not incredibly stupid.
Psyco has just recently become semi-coherent. He's still getting his brain cells realigned. He's a hardcore follower of the MSM.
Gabby is a DNC hack. She's here to troll and stir things up. And I would not be surprised if she were on some liberal payroll.

There are 2 people who who live in my area who resempble these comments
One ran for office in 2004 and was osundly defeated. After the election he had a letter to the Editoor attacking the "money worshiping voters" and has since risen in the ranks of the local Dems
His name is Paul Politis and he is the head of the local Dem party
The other is a retired union hack who is a big player - surprise - the local Dem party and his name in Marlin Wagner. He also send insulting LTE every month and provides much comin relief. The problem is he believes his hate filled crap as does Gabby, and Joe
They do live LA and they are for real.

It does make me wonder about some of these posters and whether they are paid in some way by liberal groups to get on boards and spew propaganda. They do use the same talking points and even say the same things on other boards. I have to wonder if they are paid hourly or by the post. It wouldn't surprise me if there were a liberal group out there sponsoring just such activities. Of course this enters into the realm of conspiracy theory.
That is because the all feed on the same intellectual fecal matter from Think Progress, Daily KOS, Common Dreams, HuffPo, etc.

Did you know that one of the laws put into effect on January 1 bars a landlord from evicting a renter if they have been a victim of stalking or abuse? Not only do the people here sound like Gabby and the rest of the loons, they are the ones making the laws.

Palin aide: 'Never intended gun sights'
An aide to Sarah Palin said images of cross-hairs were never meant to evoke violence, in the Palin camp's first extended comment on yesterday's attack.
" We have nothing whatsoever to do with this," Palin aide. Rebecca Mansour told the talk radio host Tammy Bruce in an interview. "We never ever, ever intended it to be gun sights. It was simply cross-hairs like you'd see on maps," she said, suggesting that it is a "surveyor's symbol."
There is "nothing irresponsible about our graphic," she said.
She called attempts to link Palin to the violence "obscene" and "appalling," and said she was "disgusted" with the politicization.
"We can't ban the words 'targeted swing districts' from the English language," she said. "We did nothing wrong here."
"I don't understand how anybody could be held responsible for somebody who is completely mentally unstable like this. Where I come from the person that is actually shooting is the one that's culpable," Mansour said, speculating that the shooter is a paranoid schizophrenic. "It seems that the people that knew him said that he was left-wing and very liberal -- but that is not to say that I am blaming the left."
"I never went out and blamed Al Gore or any environmentalist for the crazy insane person who went to shoot up the Discovery Channel," she said.

Jesus Christ. Here this goes. I am tired of being told what I think about things.
Just because I find something distasteful, needless, senseless, irresponsable etc does not mean I want it legislated against. If you really think I believe that then you truly do think I am some sort of ludicrous idiot.
Infact, while we're at it; I may as well continue with an example, take swearing, I don't like swearing much, and its very rare that I'd use it, and hearing a women swear makes my toes curl, there's just something wrong about it. However, I have no desire to ever see swearing be make illegal. Infact the very idea that some words are illegal to say is somewhat baffling to me. For what is a word if not an expression of self, and if the self can be otherwised expressed is it the word or the expression at fault? Obviously the expression, making the word meaningless.
Anyways, disregard all you have just read, assume that I want lots of stuff banned, and make up whatever else you like,
Oh I also dont like giraffes, idk they just look shifty, I guess the only reasonable solution is to demand all giraffes are slaughtered, yes? Then I won't be able to fall foul of their shifty eyes :3

Wow, this has really gotten sad. Nine pages already? Do some of you guys really think that your opinions are that much more valid than mine? Do you really feel that the opinions of a 26-year-old mother as expressed on a message board are going to lead to the overthrow of the country?
I posted a "target ad" devised by Sarah Palin during the 2010 midterm elections. Because it was reflective of how Palin feels about opposing candidates. And her support of candidates like Sharron Angle, who famously stated "If we don't win at the ballot box, what will be the next step?"
Never did I state that Palin advocated the shooting of any candidate. It is merely the normal over reaching by the ultra right-wing nutcases that frequent this board on a daily basis. It's like what they said about Charles Manson -- he never killed anyone, just told his followers who he didn't like and where they lived.
Wow, what an incredibly lunatic statement. You must remember that I am not the one that monitors this board all day, waiting to jump on anyone who disagrees with me. I have a full-time job, a husband and a daughter. I don't live politics like many of you do. I make my points and move on.
That is why I don't spent my entire day perusing right-wing blogs and listening to hours of Fox News and talk shows in order to come up with items to post on DP. Do you people not work? Do you not have wives or girlfriends or family? Is your entire day centered around venting your anger on a political message board? It's no wonder so many right-wing extremists are single. No one can live with you. Get a grip, dudes!
Really??????? How loud were the liberals screaming when protesters were carrying around signs of hatred and vitriol about President Bush and his administration. Did you liberals think that was inappropriate? Seems that you only think it's inappropriate if it's directed at your people.
Outstanding point! I was one of those posters. As I remember, conservatives thought we were evil anti-American deviates who didn't deserve to live. The talking heads wanted us rounded up and confined to internment camps. One of them wanted us shipped overseas. A DP poster was so upset that our protest clogged up the roads that he wanted to run into our group with his vehicle.
But those sentiments suddenly did a 180 when the whole health care issue became a flash point for conservative protests. Suddenly, gathering in large numbers to protest because a sacred American right. Funny thing is, I don't recall anyone carrying weapons during our meetings. In fact, our calls to get rid of Bush were met with threats of assassination and violence. Now, the same behavior is accepted.
Many of you walk a very narrow road. When we wanted to getrid of Bush, you screamed how traitorous it was to oppose the President. You want to get rid of Obama, and suddenly it is a Crusade For America.
Bush lied to the American people, allowed our country to be attacked, started an unjust war that has killed thousands of Americans and campaigned for re-election on the bones of the victims of 9-11. That was totally patriotic. Obama pushed through a health care bill that has killed no one and conservatives believe he has destroyed the fabric of society.
But by all means, continue to read and believe only one side of the story. Your allegiance makes the Talking Heads a ton of money. The right-wing bloggers and publishers have done famously through your blind support. Fox News laughs at your gullibility while collecting high commercial prices for their newscasts.
If this is all there is to your life, I feel sorry for you. I feel sorry for any of you with partners or, more important, kids. Because they have to suffer through your hate-filled diatribes on a daily basis.
I would rather avoid politics outside of this board. Because when I watch the Animal Channel with my kids, the animals are in the wild and not sitting in a news room.

Gabby in your first post you cited Sheriff Dupnik saying how "vitrioloc rhetoric" was to blame for the shooting.
Well he has admitted his department has not found any evicience to support his statement
So Gabby he has had to back down when facts to back up his claim are demanded
Will you now do the same?
Since making his claim Saturday that the Tucson shootings were caused by "vitriolic rhetoric that we hear day in and day out from people in the radio business and some people in the TV business," Pima County Arizona Sheriff Clarence Dupnik has become a media darling being regularly quoted by press outlets from coast to coast.
On Sunday, during strong questioning from Fox News's Megyn Kelly, Dupnik admitted that his department has not uncovered one shred of evidence to support his now well-publicized assertion (video follows with partial transcript and commentary, relevant section at 1:55):

So Gabby, if she would have used the push pin graphic (like Google Maps uses) instead of the so called "gun sight" graphic, would you be afraid that a nut case would stab those same people to death with pins or spikes?
As for the "gun sight" graphic, Adobe Photoshop uses the same graphic for their brushes, see below.

And what is the appropriateness of accusing Governor Palin of advocating the assassination of Congressmen?
So, what else would you call putting crosshairs on a map with the names of congressional reps? Granted she was talking about removing them from office via the ballot box, not by gunshot. But as we have seen before, most recently in the case of Dr. Tiller, words and images can be the trigger pushing the mentally unbalanced into horrendous actions.

Well, Red, Sheriff Dupnik wasn't addressing the motives of the gunman. He was addressing the general tenor of the rhetoric coming from the collective blowhole of the right wing noise machine. But the real problem for the right here is in losing control of the national narrative. Instead of continued press coverage of Republicans and Teapublicans riding triumphantly into Washington wearing white hats, it has shifted to, as Marty Kaplan put it, "...the new story connected the dots between the inflammatory rhetoric of McCain/Palin events in 2008, the ugly confrontations at congressional town halls in the summer of 2009, the "lock and load" cackling of the 2010 campaign - and the cultural climate of the Tucson murders. Within the space of a few hours, the story had been transformed from a revenge narrative (Obama brought low) to a soul-searching meta-narrative: How has our society come to this season in hell, and what must be done to heal us?".
The right wing rhetoric and emphasis on tearing down government does not fall on deaf ears. Some, as may be the case here, act on it.

Going to backup this statement?

Miniature altar with human skull replica in backyard tent at Jared Lee Loughner's home.
Tent containing shrine in Jared Lee Loughner's Tucson backyard.
What do you think of current gun laws in the United States?
Current laws are too strict. Any infringement upon gun owners' rights is an infringement upon the 2nd amendment.
Current laws are not strict enough. We need to regulate access to deadly weapons.
Not sure.
A sinister shrine reveals a chilling occult dimension in the mind of the deranged gunman accused of shooting a member of Congress and 19 others.
Hidden within a camouflage tent behind Jared Lee Loughner's home sits an alarming altar with a skull sitting atop a pot filled with shriveled oranges.
A row of ceremonial candles and a bag of potting soil lay nearby, photos reveal.
Experts on Sunday said the elements are featured in the ceremonies of a number of occult groups.
Investigators have focused on Loughner's online anti-government ramblings as the chief motivation for the shooting Saturday of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.).

at least one reporter is doing his job
Good Morning America's Jake Tapper on Monday provided some balance to the numerous journalists who are attempting to blame the spree shooting in Arizona on Sarah Palin. The ABC journalist said of Jared Loughner, "The shooter's motives remain unclear. One acquaintance from 2007 described him as liberal."
Tapper discussed the "cross hairs" graphic created by Sarah Palin's Political Action Committee in 2010 (which targeted Democrats for political defeat). Unlike other journalists, however, he pointed out that the investigation into Loughner's interest into Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords "ties back to 2007, three years before Palin's map."
As the MRC's Brent Baker reported on Sunday, many network reporters attempted to make a connection between the shooting and Palin, the Tea Partiers and conservatives in general. ABC's graphic on Monday announced, "Politics of Vitriol: Is Rhetoric Getting Too Rough?" Additionally, Tapper played a clip of talk show host Joyce Kaufman asserting, "And if ballots don't work, bullets will."
However, he balanced that out by reading from conservative Glenn Reynolds, writing in Monday's Wall Street Journal. Tapper repeated, "He says, 'Those who purport to care about the health of our political community demonstrate precious little actual concern for America's political well being when they seize on any pretext, however flimsy, to call their political opponents accomplices to murder.'"
Additionally, when referring to Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik and his incendiary comments that this act of violence could be linked to those that would "inflame" with their political speech, Tapper made sure to identify him as an "elected Democrat."

Hey, I dunno buddy, that's just what that New York Post report says.
But here's more info on the guy and his victem,
...the shooting suspect Jared Lee Loughner, is, by any sensible interpretation, mentally deranged. Yes, he mentioned the Constitution among his various ramblings, but he also listed the Communist Manifesto as being among his favorite books. In addition, he released a YouTube video containing unintelligible ramblings of repeated nonsense phrases, including references to the government taking away "grammar," of having a colorful bird on his shoulder, brainwashing and what he called "conscience dreaming."
The utterly false and irresponsible accusation floating around certain circles on the 'net that Loughner was some sort of extreme right winger who targeted a Democrat is extremely irresponsible and hateful. Giffords was pro Second Amendment and publicly supported the right of the People to keep and bear arms. She's actually a gun owner who urged the U.S. Supreme Court to protect Second Amendment rights. She was also a huge supporter of a stronger border with Mexico, which has traditionally been one of the key positions of Arizona conservatives. Giffords can't be pigeonholed into a label, you see. Her views are far more complex than "Democrat" vs "Republican." She is certainly no "left-wing liberal," and the attack on her doesn't appear to be politically motivated at all (see below)....

...the image above is from Loughner’s Facebook page, deleted within minutes of the attack. It shows the Glock 19 with a standard mag (15 rounds of 9mm ammunition). The Washington Post and others now report that Loughner used a Glock 19. ABC confirms that the nine-millimeter caliber weapon was purchased legally from Sportsman’s Warehouse in Tucson Arizona on November 30th . . .
...The Director of the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff held a press conference this afternoon in which they revealed that Loughner fired 31 bullets. He did so from a thirty-round magazine (the “extra” bullet was stored in the chamber of the gun). This explains both the duration of the shooting (around 15 seconds) and the carnage caused. Here’s a video of a shooter firing a Glock 19 with a thirty-round magazine....

Thanks for saying that, revelarts. I was one of the early participants in this thread and like you did not make a political connection and still don't. It is very sad that so many do and so revealing that much of it is defensive. I say sickening.
Can we all simply pray to whatever we might call God for the full recovery of those injured and offer all sincere condolences to the families of those deceased as a result of this horrible event? There will be plenty of time for politics later and I trust after a competent investigation by professionals we will at least be aware of much more truth and facts than anyone can imagine right now.
Thanks again, revelarts, and thanks to anyone else who has not fallen victim to the entire media that is scrambling to fill air time , fear monger, cast undue aspersions and politicize this tragedy.

It is the right wing media and their dupes who persist in using the rhetoric of "Second Amendment Solutions". It was right wing politicians who sold tickets to shoot at photographs of Representative Giffords with automatic weapons during last summers congressional races in Arizona.

Yes 9+ pages. Amazing what happens when someone does a horrendous act and than others begin to immediately use it to attack political opponents who had nothing to do with the act in question. The bodies arent even cold and you guys are trying to attack Palin. I mean what the heck?!
What's even more amazing is you dont have a single problem with that. You don't see how that makes you a despicable person. People are dead. Do you care about that? No. You are more upset that people arent buying this disgraceful spin then you are that people are dead. It's sickening.
Yes. I think my opinions are more valid than yours. Specifically because I dont have to use tragedies to prove my point. I dont have to turn to emotional and inciteful rhetoric or use the blood of innocents to persuade people of my opinions.
And yes. I think that our Republic will be destroyed when the hearts of 26 old mothers would rather play politics using the dead rather than mourn for the lost of the victims, especially when they include a 9 year old girl. I must admit Dems are trying to use the shooting to their full political advantage, Now one of them has decided to make money off of it
Sen. Bernie Sanders, I-Vt., sent out a fundraising email to supporters Tuesday in which he offered his personal analysis of last weekend’s shooting in Arizona, tying the tragedy to “right-wing reactionaries,” despite offering no evidence that the shooter, Jared Loughner, even followed politics or conservative causes.
The Vermont senator, a self-proclaimed socialist who caucuses with the Democratic Party, cited past acts of vandalism at Rep. Gabrielle Giffords‘ district office after last year’s health care overhaul vote, as well as Sarah Palin’s now-infamous “crosshairs” map.
“In light of all of this violence – both actual and threatened – is Arizona a state in which people who are not Republicans are able to participate freely and fully in the democratic process?” asks Sanders. “Have right-wing reactionaries, through threats and acts of violence, intimidated people with different points of view from expressing their political positions?”
Sanders called Saturday’s Tucson shooting a “horrendous act of violence,“ but suggested that ”nobody can honestly express surprise that such a tragedy finally occurred.”
When pressed about why the senator would use the Arizona tragedy to solicit donations from his political supporters, Sanders’ spokesperson defended the message, claiming that Sanders regularly sends out such letters to his supporters. “It would have been absurd not to comment on what happened,” the spokesperson told ABC News.

The Dems and liberal media have lost his battle and have ened up looking like fools
It has been determined from friends that Loughner did NOT listen to talk radio or watch the news
Loughner Friend: 'He Did Not Watch TV' or 'Listen to Political Radio'
By Lachlan Markay | January 12, 2011 | 17:43
It's become clear since Saturday that some in the media are determined to blame outspoken conservatives for the Tucson massacre. So there's really no reason to believe that yet another fact contradicting that attack will put it to rest.
But in the spirit of journalism - that thing the left's media attack dogs profess their reverence for - it should be noted: a friend of the killer, Jared Lee Loughner, told "Good Morning America" that Loughner "did not watch TV. He disliked the news. He didn’t listen to political radio. He didn’t take sides. He wasn’t on the left. He wasn’t on the right."
In other words, if this friend is to be believed, no cable news or talk radio personality drove Loughner to commit this heinous act.
That, of course, has been a frequent refrain this week. MSNBC's Contessa Brewer suggested blame for the shooting might lie with "vitriolic right-wing talkers." In searching for "angry rhetoric" that might've driven Loughner to kill, Andrea Mitchell went back five years to single out something Glenn Beck had said. Ed Schultz simply hurled blame for the shooting at the entire Fox News Channel.
All of the media handwringing over conservative talk on television and radio sidesteppped the fact that no evidence had been found (and still none has) supporting that contention. But media liberals were not about to let facts (or, in this case, the lack thereof) get in the way of smearing conservative commentators.
Maybe the words of Loughner's friend above will reinvigorate their concern for truth above political hackery.

After nearly a week of being blamed for the shooting, Ms Palin issued a statement and the liberal media's reaction was so typical
At sunrise in the East on Wednesday, Sarah Palin demonstrated that she has little interest — or capacity — in moving beyond her brand of grievance-based politics. And at sundown in the West, Barack Obama reminded even his critics of his ability to rally disparate Americans around a message of reconciliation…
The former Alaska governor has a knack for supplying rhetoric that will delight her supporters, send her critics howling and invariably create a frenzy of coverage. But her response suggests she is capable of hitting just that one note…
But for much of the eight-minute talk she was defensive and showed little interest in doing anything other than channeling the understandable resentment of her ideological kinsmen over the blame-casting. And that won’t appeal much to a political center that — even while they may not think Palin is in any way responsible for Tucson — preferred more conciliation even before the jarring attempted assassination of a member of Congress.

Death Threats Against Sarah Palin at 'Unprecedented Level,' Aides Say
Palin's Video Prompts Debate Over 'Blood Libel;' Palin's Office Talking to Security
An aide close to Sarah Palin says death threats and security threats have increased to an unprecedented level since the shooting in Arizona, and the former Alaska governor's team has been talking to security professionals.
Since the shooting in Tucson, Palin has taken much heat for her "crosshairs" map that targeted 20 congressional Democrats in the 2010 mid-term election, including that of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords, who was the main target of Saturday's attack.
Friends say Palin, a possible 2012 contender, was galled as suggestions of her role in the tragedy have swirled.
Palin responded in detail today to the attacks leveled against her, but while her intentions may have been to shift the blame away from herself, she instead put her in the hot seat again.
"Journalists and pundits should not manufacture a blood libel that serves only to incite the very hatred and violence they purport to condemn," she said in an early morning Facebook post today.
The term "blood libel" has been used historically to falsely accuse Jews of using Christian children's blood to prepare their Passover matzoh. The myth is said to have begun in Europe as early as the 12th century, perpetuated by the death of a small boy in England in 1144.
It's a term that Jews say has been used to incite anti-Semitism and justify violence against them for centuries.
Palin's use of the word has triggered some deep emotions, even among those who believe Palin has been a target of unfair criticism since the Tucson shooting.

The Tucson Witch Hunt
By CHARLES M. BLOW
Tragedy in Tucson. Six Dead. Democratic congresswoman shot in the head at rally.
Immediately after the news broke, the air became thick with conjecture, speculation and innuendo. There was a giddy, almost punch-drunk excitement on the left. The prophecy had been fulfilled: “words have consequences.” And now, the right’s rhetorical chickens had finally come home to roost.
The dots were too close and the temptation to connect them too strong. The target was a Democratic congresswoman. There was the map of her district in the cross hairs. There were her own prescient worries about overheated rhetoric.
Within hours of the shooting, there was a full-fledged witch hunt to link the shooter to the right.
“I saw Goody Proctor with the devil! Oh, I mean Jared Lee Loughner! Yes him. With the devil!”
The only problem is that there was no evidence then, and even now, that overheated rhetoric from the right had anything to do with the shooting. (In fact, a couple of people who said they knew him have described him as either apolitical or “quite liberal.”) The picture emerging is of a sad and lonely soul slowly, and publicly, slipping into insanity...

FOCUSING most of the responsibility and attention on her rather than the victims or the shooter. The Media has KEPT RELOADING and FIRING OFF accusation after accusation barely real and mostly imagined against her.
Imagined accusations? Care to offer some links?
As for the focus on her, IMO most of it comes from Palin opening her own trap to try to re-route some of the publicity in her direction. Common tactic of hers.

Seriously?
You've missed the accusations saying that Palins map and talk "somehow" has contributed to the shooting.

PRider your not seriously saying the focus on her came from her? That SHE started talking about herself 1st when the AZ Shooting started? Posting her target map, Quoting herself on Reloading without the immediate caveat "THAT'S NOT A CALL TO VIOLENCE" part.
We all know you don't like her and don't agree with her that's fine. But lets be honest about what she really is and isn't responsible for here.
I find it hard to believe that some people honestly think that Palin intended, hoped or hinted that Democrats should be shot.
That's not her.
Now some of the people around Clinton or the Bushs or Nixon or LBJ yeah. I wouldn't put it past them to knock people off. But Palin? No. I get the impression that she may be off here and there but she is sincere and a decent person, as far a politicians go.
Not a political sith lord.

Info from Friend and old Girlfriends about the mental state of the shooter.
Really takes it out of the political realm.
The whole thing is so messed up.
No winners here.
Best MSM TV report and pych assessment i've seen so far.

PR did not miss anything. He knows what you are talking about - he is being a troll. He was like a fog at a water bowl lapping up all the "news reports" about Ms Palin and the Tea Party being responsible for the shooting. Like PB he tossed out the usual garbage about Sarah Palin and the Tea Party - and when busted he plays dumb
Even the NY Time on their op-ed admitted the week long blame game by libs backfired
As with the Obama agenda no matter how hard the liberal media tried to sell it the people are not buying anyone is responsible for the AZ shooting except the guy that did the shooting
Much to the dismay of people like PR, Gabby, and PB

Honestly, I believe she has exploited the events in Tucson by trying to spin them in such a way as to get more publicity for herself. Not that she (intentionally) incited anyone into shooting other politicians. Hope that's clear enough.

so are you and Psych saying that if you blame someone for horrible events over and over irrationally in the media it doesn't cause people to "hate" that person and possible incite some unstable people to violence?
I thought that was your whole point.

By that you mean she had the audacity to defend herself against the attacks made by the left.

OK folks it is clear the posts made by PR led to the shootings in AZ. It is reasonable to assume PR is an accessory to murder and attempted murder
Now PR do not say a word in defense of yourself. You will be trying to exploit the events in Tucon by attempting to spin the events in such a way as to get publicity for yourself.
