50 years ago today, on April 12, 1961, Russian cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin became the first man ever to rocket into space. He was followed three weeks later by Alan Shephard, the first American to reach space. A year later, John Glenn became the first man to orbit the earth.

And 150 years ago today, on April 12, 1861, Confederate soldiers fired on Union troops in Ft. Sumter in Charleston, SC, a battle that marked the beginning of the American Civil War.
