I'll be damned... you'll be going right through Bozeman, Montana, and I plan to move up there soon, and Madison, Wisconsin, where I grew up.

Have fun and don't push it too hard Jeff. These road trips can be a blast.

May as well see the Crazy Horse Monument since your going to be that close anyway. It's massive and a quick visit.

Road trips are awesome. To celebrate high school graduation in June of 2002, four of us (myself, my cousin and two best friends) took a four-week road trip through the U.S. We started in Anaheim, cut through Austin and Dallas on the way to Atlanta, went up the east coast to NYC and Boston, then went across the northern U.S. through Chicago and Detroit, then through the midwest back to Los Angeles.
Best graduation present ever!

You forget, our parents are liberals. :laugh2:

One of my favorite moments of the trip was one all male DP posters can appreciate. We had stopped in Las Cruces, New Mexico to eat. We ordered to go and waited. When the order was ready, we sent my best friend Lauren in to grab the food and pay for it (about $35 or so).
There was a dorky kid working the register, with another helping at the counter. Lauren is a cute blonde who is very busty. Perhaps trying to impress his buddy, the geek said "I'll give it to you for nothing if you show me your tits." Lauren said the guy snickered after he said it.
Lauren said she flashed the guy and walked out with the food, with both guys protesting that they weren't serious.
I wish I had seen it for myself. :cheers2:

OK, here's all you ever wanted to know about my road trip, and lots more:

First of all, it was just me. The wife and kids are still in WA until our son is born, on/about July 4th. I packed my Kia as full as it would get.

Day 1 (May 10): Left at 5 AM. Took I-90 East. Stopped in Couer d'Alene, ID for lunch. Didn't stop again until Butte, MT. The drive between those two towns is spectacular. The little town outisde Butte where the Motel 6 is has 100 people, three bars, and five casinos. Holy crap. Ate dinner at a truck stop.

Day 2: Butte, MT, to Rapid City, SD. I stopped twice in Wyoming (Sheridan and Gilette) for lunch/gas. I love Wyoming. I saw antelope and deer, and while I didn't see any, I know there were tons of prarie dogs. Got into Rapid City to find that the A/C didn't work in my hotel room, and it had been 85 that day. Yuck. Ate at Chili's. Mmmm.

Day 3: Rapid City to Rochester, MN. Rapid City is about where the West ends and the Midwest starts. Drove through a little bit of Iowa, since I hadn't been there before. Got into Rochester and found out that the Mayo Clinic is there (no, I didn't know that). Ate at a crappy Mexican place.

Day 4: Rochester to Toledo, OH. The Longest Day. Drove through Wisconsin, which I thought was quite pretty. Got into Illinois and it suddenly got really flat. I drove around Chicago (no offense, Kathianne) to avoid the traffic. Went past Gary into SW Michigan, since I'd never been to Michigan before. Drove down to South Bend, IN, and picked up I-90 again, all the way into Toledo. Ate at a pizza place, and had a beer/watched hockey in a dive next to the hotel.

Day 5: Toledo to Syracuse. This only took about 6 hours. I passed Cleveland (quickly, thankfully) around 10AM. That place sucks. Got into Syracuse around 4PM and hung out for the night in the hotel room.

I have now been to 45 states - all except Alaska, North Dakota, Vermont, Mississippi, and Arkansas (unless you count being on a plane that refueled in Little Rock).

I'm moving in little by little in my new place in Syracsue, but that's a new thread altogether. But I'm back and I'm online again! :D

Hey Jeff! Glad you made it to a destination with wi-fi! LOL! No offense about Chicago, traffic, etc. No way, no how. If you were 'stuck here' I'd have been glad to have met you at a Chuckie Cheese and popped for tokens. They have suprisingly good coffee.

Notes from an American road trip:

--Driving across the desert sucks. There are large areas of Texas that have a lot of nothing.

--New Orleans rocked before Katrina. Too bad the Bushies wanted to drown it.

--I loved Atlanta. We hung out in Little Five Points and saw some of the coolest small shops ever.

--We had lunch in a small restaurant overlooking Baltimore Harbor. Kind of expensive, but the view was well worth it.

--Washington D.C. is cool for history buffs like myself.

--New York City is vastly overrated and generally sucks. Yankee Stadium is a faded relic of its former self. The best part was visiting CBGB, the birthplace of American punk. Revolver Records was pretty good. Got some nice bootlegs.

--Boston was incredible! Fenway Park was living history. I don't even remember who was playing. I was too caught up in just being there.

--BASEBALL HALL OF FAME! I swear, I could die there. One of the most genuinely breathtaking places I have ever been too.

--Detroit was ... Detroit. I wouldn't have gone there, except Lauren wanted to visit her aunt. Who told us stories about seeing the Tigers in their glory years and cooked some delicious gumbo.

--Chicago was another great American city. Wrigley Field was also pretty cool. The whole "Wrigleyville" area was neat to see.

--Cleveland was not my favorite city. The Rock and Roll Hall of Hame is pretty neat. The rest of the city blows.

--We also went to St. Louis for a baseball game and to Oklahoma City to see the Murrah Building Memorial.

--We drove through Albequerque, which was unexpectedly neat, stood on a corner in Winslow, Arizona (such a fine sight to see!) and went through Las Vegas. Which is not really an exciting place when you are all 18.

No packing yet - "They" will show up at the end of June and pack everything for us.

Today I registered for my hotels for the trip + 2 weeks in the Fort Rucker area.

I go through phases - moods. Some days I'm excited beyond reason to get there and start working. Other days I'm near my wits-end with the fact I'll never see a LOT of people/places again.

Packing for you is awesome!

It's understandable that you would feel all kinds of emotions. When you feel down, remind yourself that it's not a forever decision, unless you want it to be.

Perhaps the greatest experience of my life was my four-week graduation road trip.
When my sister graduated from high school, my family paid for her to go to Europe. When I graduated in June, 2002, the world was bit less settled, so I opted to to take a road trip across the U.S. with my cousin and my two best friends. The families got together and paid for a rental van and hotels across the U.S.
We started in Los Angeles, picked up my cousin Dahlia in Dallas, and made a huge circle across the bottom half of the country, up the east coast, down through midwest and back across the southwest.
You don't know lunacy until you have traveled in a van for a month with four 18-year-old girls. :laugh2:

I plan on starting/doing a blog each nite, to highlight (if) any highlights, and to give random thoughts. I'll start a new thread when ready - or may use the blog feature. :)

Darrin, You may want to reconsider going through IL. I came across this article just a minute ago.

Listen up drivers! If you're planning routes that include highways in Illinois, be especially alert through construction areas.

That's because a state program there has assembled a squadron of white photo speed enforcement vans that are loaded up with the latest in photo radar technology.

The vans are set up to record the speed of vehicles and "capture clear images of the driver and the license plate."

The result, state officials say, is like other photo radar programs that send citations for speeding by certified mail, requiring a court appearance and imposing a minimum first-time fine of $375. A second fine totals $1,000 plus a suspension of your drivers' license for 90 days.

I thought you might want to know what they are planning for their construction sights!

You're not far from paduchah? FWIW, it's just me...no kids for this trip. :)

Thanks man!

Not me, just the family used to have a lake home on Kentucky Lake, Murray, KY. For the life of me I can't remember the name of the park, but it was gorgeous and the restaurant was awesome and cheap!

VERY VERY good tip! I'll be sure and pack my license plate with road grime and debris. :) I'm only in IL for about an hour or two, then an over-night so, but I will keep the advice!

I'll trade her to ya for a 1st round draft pick? :D hehe...I planned the move to AL to keep NO LESS THAN 1000 miles of 'buffer' tween you horn-dogs and mary.
