I drove to San Antonio the other day and saw plenty of turkey and black vultures and an assortment of Hawks. There was also a pair of Bald Eagles near the Guadolupe River and an Osprey on the golf course that I ended up working on.

That Kestrel is beautiful, looks like a little female. I used to work with a Wildbird Rehab Group in Louisiana for a number of years. I took care of a few American Kestrels and they are a real kick in the ass, little mini falcons that are the first bird for many falconry apprentices. The Hawks I handled were pretty mean but nothing like the big owls I took care of, they were vicious. I've warned numerous people that if they let little dogs out in the backyard unattended they could easily become a great snack for a Red Tail Hawk or a Great Horned Owl..... in Colorado, where Golden Eagles patrol, a cocker spanial wouldn't even be a challenge.

female kestrel, male Kestrel, turkey vulture and a black vulture

Hey Dillo,

Did he let you get that close or were you using a long lens? If he did let you get close there must have been something wrong with him. We used to get a lot of stunned owls that had hit things chasing prey. I took care of a buch of screech owls including a red phased screech that would silently fly around the house....he landed on a framed pen and ink drawing of a red tail I had done, he took a shit on it......critics!

We see lots of Canadian geese and flocks of wild turkeys roaming the fields. Every once-in-awhile, a bunch of bright yellow birds fly across the yard... I think they are goldfinches. And we see hummingbirds, too. A lot of starlings.

I got that close and I had the same concerns about it's health. I put the back of my hand up against it's breast as I would my cockatiel and it calmly flew up into hole in a big dead tree in the yard. ( While my son was screaming hysterically " IT'S GONNA BITE YOU IN THE EYES" !!) :laugh2:

I see lots of goldfinches, house finches, song sparrows, Carolina chickadees, and some kind of wren (not sure which kind) in my back yard. Once in a while, I'll see a pileated woodpecker in the trees.

The Royal Tit-Watching (Ornithological) Society of Britain used to have a site called nice-tits.org. Not sure where they moved it, though. :(
