Here we have the quest for "green energy" and Obamanomics in one story

Isn't it wonderful knowing how Dems are pissing thru our tax dollars?

San Diego will be one of five cities in which the federal workers will test plug-in cars for government use.

The General Services Administration said Tuesday it plans to buy 116 plug-in electric vehicles, including 101 Chevrolet Volts and 10 Nissan Leafs.

It will put 13 Volts and four Leafs with San Diego workers, and will also install charging stations to serve them. The cars will go to workers with the Navy, the Marine Corps, Veterans Affiars and the Department of Transportation.

The Volts can travel about 35 miles on electricity alone, and have gasoline engines that kick in when the battery is depleted. The all-electric Leaf has a range of about 100 miles, according to Nissan.

“Diversifying our transportation fleet with hybrids, electric vehicles and other alternative fuel vehicles is a critical element in President Obama’s long-term plan to break our dependence on foreign oil and invest in America’s growing clean energy economy,” Energy Secretary Steven Chu said at a news conference Tuesday.

The purchases announced Tuesday are expected to cut gas usage by almost 29,000 gallons a year, saving taxpayer an estimated $116,000 and reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 257 metric tons, said GSA administrator Martha Johnson.

The GSA manages a fleet of 650,000 vehicles, the largest single fleet in the country. About 12,000 of which are hybrids now.

The purchase announced Tuesday is a tiny fraction that fleet, but an important first step, said Michael Robertson, the GSA’s chief of staff.

“We wanted to start with a number that was large enough to track, but manageable for deployment in the country,” he said.

The GSA is paying $38,500 each for the Volts. It’s also buying 10 Nissan Leaf hatchbacks for $33,000 apiece, and $32,500 for five Think City EV models, from a Finnish company

You do realise those are yearly savings right?

Don't tell me - you failed basic math and graduated from the public school system

Correct?

How does that reduce anything? I know we're getting some of those Leafs...our electricity is coal-powered. Also - whatever "greenhouse gas" the knucklehead scientists-with-agendas say will be 'saved' - the massively-largest greenhouse gas is water vapor. Co2 is Plant food. Plants create/release O2. So - yeah, kill plants to prevent a gas which does not lead to any sort of greenhouse affect beyond what's already there.

I swear I can't understand how some of our 'leaders' can even tie their shoes. Our society praises 'educated people' - and berates wisdom.

Why should they care? They did not have to go out and earn the money - they only spend it

It is another classic example of the insanity of "green energy" It always costs more, and it is never comprable to our current sources of energy

BUT it does keep the money flowing to the Dems suporters and that is what counts

So 101 Chevy Volts at $38,500 a car equals $3,888,500. 10 Nissan "Leafs" at $33,000 equals $330,000. Weird that the 5 other cars of the 116 were not mentioned. Lets just say those are $35,000 each. That equals $175,000. So...

101 x $38,500 = $3,888,500
10 x $33,000 = $330,000
5 x $35,000 = $175,000

Grand total = $4,393,500

Estimated annual savings = $116,000

Initial investment divided by Savings = 37.875

So in 37.875 years, San Diego will have recouped enough annual savings to repay the initial investment. Its like they pay for themselves! :happy0203:

Of course we will just ignore the cost of the electricity being used to charge the vehicles but hey SAVINGS!!!

You do need to factor in the cost of the car they would have had to purchase in the first place, assuming they did that is, which is approximately half. That knocks the payback period to 19ish years which is now spectacular considering that the cars will last approximately 5 years.

My question is who the hell would want an electric car in the first place?

From what I have seen, the people are ignoring them and do not want them

and the adminstrative cost to run the program. Someone will have to push the papers, buy the land, write the contracts, and issue the checks

Hate to break it to you but some people really do want an electric car.

Going a step further, lets say they purchased 116 Ford Fiesta's with 29mpg city/40hwy. Using the measuring stick for cost per mile shown here, (http://www.renewableenergyworld.com/rea/news/article/2008/08/mileage-costs-of-plug-in-hybrids-53416) We can estimate an electric cars cost at about $.06/mile. An average gasoline based car may use $.18 per mile. The Fiesta uses about $.12 per mile. We'll guess that a government car racks up about 20,000 miles in a year. So...

116 x $15,500 = 1,798,000
$.12 x 20,000 = $2400 x 116 = $278,400 annual cost

116 Electric cars = $4,393,500
$.06 x 20,000 = $1200 x 116 = $139,200 annual cost

Initial investment difference = 2,595,500
Annual Savings = 139,200
Years to break even with Fiesta purchase = 18.65

Again, how often are they updating their fleets? I doubt they will ride a car for 18+ years. More likely they update the fleet every 2 to 3 years or so because they can. So really, no savings whatsoever.
