Read the books in High School big fun.
Not sure if the Movie's going to do any of the books justice.

Trailer is Here.

Dela T looks good enough but shes to pale, and frankly she got to many clothes on. Which is an surprisingly moral movie move especially since in the books she practically naked. But good for them.

Kind of hard to make accurate John Carter movies when the people were COMPLETELY naked save their war harnesses. Not going to go over well with censors, I'm thinking. Definitely surprising it's a Disney movie.

And Willem Defoe as Tars Tarkas? THAT must be SOME doing to make that shrimp a 12+ft tall reptilian.

True.
If this was done to fit my imagination it would be incredibly lush. the Book covers when I was kid were done by Frank Frazzeta, Amazing stuff. Marked my adolescent brain for beautiful women for life.

The Lord of the Rings proved they can do a decent job with the classic fantasy stuff. The one and only version they did of Princess of Mars was really horrible, dumb and many more negative adjectives. It even had and old Tracy Lords as Deja Thoris.

I'm with you rev I hope they do it justice. At least give the Tharks four arms. As I recall John Carter of Mars was actually the last book of the series. Number 10 I think.

I too read them all as a teen along with all 22 Tarzan books, the Venus series, at the earths core and the numerous individual books. Burroughs did seem to have a thing for everyone running around naked.

Rings was awesome, I can nit pick but yeah they really set the standard.

I never got into Tarzan other than the wismiller films. I read the Conan books.

"old Tracy Lords" LOL.

I had the same books with the same art. Also the Tarzan and Pellucidar series were covered by Frazetta.

Unfortunately, that crappy movie immediately comes to mind when they make mention of a new one. "How can they screw it up worse?" I'm hoping the Disney folks do it justice as well. They aren't known for too many low budget flix.

At least with Disney producing it it shouldn't be a total loss. Samuel Jackson's off shooting the Hobbit so he's not available, but I would be more encouraged if he was doing it. It's a movie that will attract all us old Burroughs fans. The kids in the audiences would be wondering where did all these old people come from.

I saw a 3 minute version, it looks like they've changed the story to something that might be pulled out of the can, but I'll probably still give it a shot anyway.

This looks promising. Not sure how well they will keep to the story line but at least the Tharks have four arms. The white ape was a little over sized and the Tharks were a tad skinny.

Burroughs was my first science fiction writer; loved it and still do. I have a lot of Frazzetta's art work as well.

I read a boat load, never heard of this book, or even author. This thread has peaked my interest though.

It's basically A Princes of Mars renamed. The actual book John Carter of Mars was the tenth in the series and completed by his son. Most of the action took place on Jupiter for some reason. Edgar Rice Burroughs is the author of all the Tarzan novels. There were 22 of them all together. He had the Mars series, a Venus series, the Tarzan series, At the Earths Core series, Land that time Forgot series and numerous individual books. I read 95% of all the books he wrote as a kid.

Back when I was drawing and painting I use to emulate Frank Fazzetta art. I got very good at drawing the human figure.

You what? OMFG Dude. You have lived a deprived life. We ought to name a charity for your literary education. Hell, man, even an uneducated Jarhead like me read every word ERB wrote that he could find.

I am so sorry for your (well it aint loss, but I am at a loss for words).

The only way it could be worse is if we found you never had a rootbeer float.

Get thee to a library.......

If Cecil B. DeMille (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/entertainment/directors/cecil-b.-demille.htm#r_src=ramp) were alive today and given the chance to direct a special effects-laden fantasy adventure on Mars, he might have made something similar to Andrew Stanton (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/entertainment/oscars/andrew-stanton-and-jim-reardon.htm#r_src=ramp)’s visually stunning epic “John Carter.”Carter may be new to the cinema but is actually based off a century-old series of books by (http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2012/03/06/review-john-carter-visually-stunning-testament-to-sci-fi-genre/?intcmp=features#) Edgar Rice Burroughs (“Tarzan”), particularly “A Princess of Mars,” without which we wouldn’t have classic science fiction books by Ray Bradbury and Arthur C. Clarke or films like “Star Wars (http://www.foxnews.com/topics/entertainment/movies/star-wars.htm#r_src=ramp)” and “Avatar.” John Carter was first and he’s just now making a welcome, if a little belated, arrival.

Didn't know it was out. I don't go to theaters so I'll have to wait for the DVD. And hopefully it will be an extended version.

I read the entire Tarzan series. I think I was in grade school then. Probably the only girl to bring those to school.

OK, went and saw John Carter last night.. Have to say it was a very good movie. Excellent special effects, good story line. They combined a few of the books so a lot came at you pretty quick.. The ending could set up for future John Carter films or it could just be an ending (could go either way).

I do hope they decide to make a sequel due to how well they did on this one. I would recommend seeing this movie for the action, effects, and good story line. My kids really enjoyed it and are actively looking for the books..

The music in the trailer sounds like Led Zep "Kashmir".

That seeing the movie has moved your kids to seek out the books, in my mind, makes the movie very successful...

Nothing beats the movie your mind creates while reading a book.

Nothing beats the movie your mind creates while reading a book.My boys are voracious readers, actually our whole family is. We ALWAYS have lots of books, either library/nook/school library/Barnes & Noble/anywhere we can find them.

My oldest was reading in his dorm room and a couple of kids asked what he was studying and he said he wasn't, they asked why he was reading and he replied because he enjoyed it. They were literally dumb struck as to why someone would read for fun....

My middle school student has a weekly book report and it has to be in his "lexile" (some measurement of reading comprehension). His is college level and has a hard time finding anything for himself. His teacher decided to let him use ANY science fiction he can find. Thank God for that, makes it a little easier..

My 9 year old is turning into quite the reader, far better than me already. He's been really into Rick Riordan books lately, maybe I'll turn him on to these if they're in the right age range for him.
