View Full Version : Outstanding issues?

I haven't had a lot of feedback regarding board functionality and wanted a central place for everyone/anyone to post their problems. If you find something not working, or missing, please post here and I will see what I can do about fixing whatever problems that may still exist.

I'll post my own known issue...

When looking at the bottom of the board, as an example, you may see it saying "9 members online and 15 guests". But then when you view the "Who's online" page, it may shows 16 members and 15 guests (and still only be 9 if you count them).

This is a known "bug" with version 4.1.4 of vB and will be resolved with the release of 4.1.5. I think that release is out now and I will update as soon as I can.

I get a firefox message saying it's blocked an attempt to redirect to another page periodically when I click on a thread. This has only been happening since this new version. I just ignore it but thought I would make you aware of it.

I've made a change to how the board redirects between www and non-www pages. Please let me know if you get a redirect error again. Abbey has reported a similar issue.

I've made a change to how the board redirects between www and non-www pages. Please let me know if you get a redirect error again. Abbey has reported a similar issue.

Even better, I added some code to the "server" that will sort of no longer allow anyone to go to the site without the WWW. If you try to go to any link starting with http://debatepolicy.com - it should automatically redirect you to the WWW version without issue. Having a site that allows both isn't a great idea as search engines will treat it as 2 different sites. For whatever reason, this started becoming an issue after the last update. It may be corrected in the next update, but the way I just added it, it should always now redirect without issue.

jimnyc
07-25-2011, 08:13 PM
In fact, if anyone clicks on this link - http://debatepolicy.com

It should correct for you and bring you to the WWW version of the site.

Hopefully that will end that issue, but please let me know if any redirect issues pop up. Also keep any other issues coming people! I can't fix or enhance what I don't know about!!

Also, as I've mentioned many times in the past, feel free to post suggestions here as well as your "bugs". And by suggestions, I mean ideas to better the board (add software, change color/picture, add smiley...) - not "ban so or so and the place will be better". If I don't know about technical issues, I cannot fix them. And your odds on seeing changes implemented to enhance the board are much better if you ask! :thumb:

No issues ... I just don't know how to post a picture or video. I can post the link but the actual picture/video doesn't show up in the post. Maybe a reminder about how to do that?

There are a few ways to post pictures. One way, is to click the circled icon in the picture below, and then paste the link to the picture in the dialogue box that opens.
http://i55.tinypic.com/16gbkp5.jpg

An easier way, is to just place the IMG tags around the link to your picture. That would be the link to your picture and then the linked picture between the IMG will show up in the post.

A video isn't harder, but isn't specific to the board and may depend on where you're getting the video from. Youtube is the most popular, so lets cover that one. Find and open pretty much any video you like on there. Right underneath the video, click on the button that says "share". Now, click on where it says "Embed". COPY that entire bit of code displayed and just paste it into your post. That's it, now the video will be in your post!

Not all Youtube vids allow embedding, that is up to the uploader. Also, most other video sites are the same, where you can just copy the "embed code" if they offer it. If not, just place a simple link to it. If members are too lazy to click on a link and watch it in a separate window, too bad! :laugh2::poke:

For some reason even following the instructions for vidoes you posted. It still wont let me post them, which is a new issue..I didn't have problems before. I get the following message now:

The "a href" in your post tells me you copied something wrong. Let me be a little more detailed...

1- go to this Youtube video by Nickelback - http://www.youtube.com/user/nickelbacktv?blend=1&ob=4

2- Underneath the video, click where it says "SHARE"

3- This will give you a direct link to the video, but right underneath that there should now be an option for "EMBED"

4- The EMBED code should start with the word iframe and end with iframe. If you copy the entire code you should see the following:

<iframe src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/YbP1K-bQB6g" allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="349" width="560"></iframe>

Just to clarify, you can't copy/paste the picture, just the code. For example, here is a direct link to a picture:

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rupmaka/Pittsburgh-Steelers-Logo.gif

Now with the IMG tags around it:

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rupmaka/Pittsburgh-Steelers-Logo.gif

Now I click on the icon above this post, then click "from url", and then paste in the same link as the direct one above:

http://www.andrew.cmu.edu/user/rupmaka/Pittsburgh-Steelers-Logo.gif

popup when I close a 'reply to thread' tab? It gets really annoying

This one I am a little hesitant to change, but of course would if many of you were against it. There are several reasons why... 1) It's somewhat rare that this pop-up will appear. It should only appear if you click on the reply button to a thread/post and then later leave without actually replying. I understand we change our minds, but it shouldn't be that often. 2) It's good for some of us that sometimes accidentally hit keystrokes or the mouse and our pages try to leave the screen. This will ensure we have a moment before possibly losing anything we typed.

I see it everytime I quote multiple posts. Due to limits regarding quote nesting, multiquote doesn't always include everything Ineed to quote. This, plus the need to quote posts out of order and/or select sections of large quotes, means I use copy-paste and multiple tabs to build large responses. Of course, I then see this popup for every 'quote post' tab I close.

The problem is you opening multiple tabs in order to collect information you want to quote. Instead of clicking on the quote button to open in a separate tab, why not go to the upper right of posts and click on the post # to open in another tab. Then you won't be closing quote tabs but just posts.

l still have 'quote post' if I want the quoted text to include the little button linking to the original post. Including a hyperlink to every post would make things a bit unwieldy.

I went to vbulletin.com to see if there was a way to disable this option. Some had asked the question already and the response from the developers was:

"You'd have to modify the software, there is no option to change it at this time."

With the question being asked by a few already, that means it's only a matter of time before someone writes code to remove/change it.

A new member, with his 1st post, posted a "hack" - which was nothing more than a black image that scrolled the length of the screen as far as you were willing to scroll - and therefore put a black image over anything you were trying to read. The post has been deleted and all should be fine now.

I have a new problem that started about a week ago....

used to be, if I made a reply post and wanted to return to the thread page that contained the post I had replied to I merely hit the back button.....

now I get a popup box that says something along the lines of, "Do you really want to leave this page? Press to continue"........

what used to take one button click now takes three or four......did you change something or did I change something in my browser........

Nope, that's a new addition to the latest version of vBulletin. It thinks you might be leaving the page you are on by accident and wants to ensure you don't want to lose any work. It's odd that it does it to you on a page you aren't actually typing anything on, but it does that to me on other boards I belong to. Another member here complained about this new code as well, and there is no way to disable it as of yet. If enough of you hate it, I will remove it once I find out how. It's a balance between code that prevents people from losing what they've been typing and code that annoys people that aren't worried about that.

Ok, disregard the fix to the annoying javascript popup message. While it does get rid of the message, I duplicated the fact that it gets rid of the ability to edit posts. Putting the java file back to it's original state brings back the ability to edit.

The good news is that quite a few have asked vB to add this as a standard "Enable/Disable" in future releases - which hopefully wouldn't be too much longer.

I looked, and it was set to the first setting (of three), which was "Enhanced Editor".

The third setting was "Standard Editor". I clicked that one.

Now it works as I like!

Oddly, the instruction just below, said that the THIRD setting was "Enhanced Editor", and that first was "Text Box".

You will lose a few options on the toolbar when posting if you choose standard editor. You can try going back to enhanced now and see if it recognizes the paragraph breaks. I used a SQL query a few weeks back to force the entire board over to the enhanced editor within their control panels. It's possible some got screwed up and need to be fiddled with, not sure. But to be fully optimized you should be using the enhanced feature.

If you can't get it to work, can you tell me what browser and OS you are using? I can open a ticket with vB and see if they are aware of this as a bug with the latest version?

Well, in truth the new editor had more bad points than good points IMHO. I'd rather stick with this one.

If you can do me a favor... Can you possibly change it back to "enhanced editor" one last time to see if it starts working, and you can change it back even if it does? I'm just wondering if it's a bug or maybe wasn't working because I "forced" it on a few users. No rush, but I would appreciate it!

And here's the second paragrah. Hope they separate out as they should...

And the third, not to be outdone.

Damn. Now it works!

Amazing what "kicking the box" can do, even when there's no box, eh?

(This is where you should say, "Kicking the box, nonsense! It was my brilliant diagnosis and masterful software skills that saved the say!", right Jim? :) )

Might still stick with the older editor. It turns huge boldface headlines into plain text, which is what I want it to do, instead of giving you huge boldface in the edit box and a bunch of hassles making them normal and readable.

Absolutely!! :coffee:

Nah, Abbey had an issue with different styles/themes for the board when I forced this default one on everyone. She fixed the issue by changing between the 2. It only made sense to have you manually change it after I changed it with a SQL query.

Can we please lose the

popup when I close a 'reply to thread' tab? It gets really annoying

I think I figured out what I did wrong when editing the code and fixed the error. Had to do with downloading a compressed javascript file versus uncompressed. Javascript files apparently like to be downloaded uncompressed if going to be edited.

I have been able to verify that the annoying popup is now gone, and I was also able to edit posts. Please let me know if there are any other problems pertaining to this issue that I might be missing.

I can post videos ok but I don't do it the way the boss describes.

Yep your way is better. For some reason it wasn't letting me use the EMBED info. But the Icon works for me...thanks for the tip :)

Is it possible to change my settings so that when I click on a thread I go right to the last post in a thread? For example, when I look on the list of latest posts and click on one, it takes me to the first page of the thread, when what I would like to do is go to the last page in the thread, preferably to the last post I have read in that thread.

Just click on the little arrow to the left of the title. That takes you to the first unread post in the thread.

Weird, showing 4 online for me and the same displayed on the who is online page. I'm also not showing LT as having been logged in for the past 24.

This morning I noticed that we can apparently no longer upload pics from our computers using the "Insert Image" button. How am I supposed to appropriately express myself in the manner to which I have become accustomed without that function? http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys/sign0068.gif

Hmmmm... I usually just insert the IMG tags around my links, but let me try a direct upload here...

Worked for me!

Jess - can you 'splain to me specifically the steps you are taking and let me see if the same happens to me?

Right. That works if you're uploading from the internet. I can do that, even though it makes me do that nasty, four lettered word (WORK). But uploading from my external hard drive or computer hard drive is different. There used to be both options when one clicked on the "insert image" button up above. It worked that last time I posted from the home computer rather than my phone. Guess that would have been some time within the past few days.

The picture I uploaded WAS from my hard drive... I'm going to now try and upload from both my HDD and the 'net...

Hmmm ... click the "image" button, which is next to the "insert video" button and the only option it gives me is to enter a URL. It used to have two options.

But then again, Gunny did play on the computer last night ... http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys/remoteImage-12-1.gif

I'm gonna be in sooooo much trouble. ;)

Look right to the left of where it states "from URL" at the top of the dialog box - can you not click where it says "from computer" (the coloring makes them blend).

That is precisely what I do not have any longer. But now that I know it is most likely my computer, rather than a board issue, I can try to figure it out. In the meantime, I have found the Photobucket smilie cache. :thumb:

Can you possibly toss up a screen shot for me?

Also, what browser are you using? And is it the browser you've always been using?

And lastly, can you delete your temp internet files & cookies, reboot and try again?

I can describe what it looks like precisely. Like yours, minus the "From Computer" option.

Firefox. Yes.

That was next on the list but I'm having too much fun, actually typing on a full-sized keyboard, rather than swyping the front of my phone. http://i717.photobucket.com/albums/ww173/prestonjjrtr/Smileys/Smiley25-1.gif

Well, enjoy the board in the mean time. When it's time for Gunny to use the computer, just tell him "Oh yeah, you need to do this, this and this!" :laugh2:
