Key points in this Outlook:

Grades awarded in university education departments are consistently higher than grades in other disciplines.
Similarly, teachers in K-12 schools receive overwhelmingly positive evaluations.
Grade inflation in education departments should be addressed through administrative directives or external accountability in K-12 schools.

While some teachers are very bright, unfortunately most aren't. That doesn't mean they won't be great teachers, as long as the have the minimum knowledge for what they are teaching. From my experience those with 'education degrees' as majors typically are not very strong in academics.

It's usually less true of secondary teachers, who majored in some other discipline. Most true of those that were in other professions and came to teaching later, based on interest in teaching.

Quite frankly, most teachers are teachers because it's almost impossible NOT to earn a degree and once you have a job, you're almost set as long as you don't do anything stupid.

Seriously go into a college sometime and see who's earning the bachelors in education. It's not the go getters. Sad, but true.

Even sadder, it could be fixed so easily. First get rid of the whole stupid education degree to begin with (for high school, middle and primary school I would leave alone) and just tell all college students that if they will teach in their field at a public school for four years in the state where they went to college that their college will be paid for. You would then see premed students down teaching biology at the local high school, etc etc.

Depends on what you mean by "smarts." You're right in that a teacher doesn't have to be a genius to teach some core of knowledge. They do need to make it minimally interesting if an average kid is going to be inspired to learn, though.

I was lucky. I grew up in a rich town in Connecticut (although we were relatively poor). Great public high school. I had several teachers with Phds, one (the resident socialist) from Harvard. These teachers were maniacal in how they inspired students to learn. It was anything but rote learning. Most kids don't get that kind of inspiration.

I do wish I did more with it, though.

I grew up in the mean streets of Arkansas. We had to walk to school, up hill both way, usually in the snow. And as you know we don't have shoes in Arkansas so, brrr. Also as most of you know, we can't read here in Arkansas, and I'm afraid that shows in my postings. Sorry about my lack of refinement.

I try, but with my limited abilities, and what with only having 3 teeth; it's hard; real hard I tell you.

Seriously, I encourage you to tell everyone you know that Arkansas sucks, we're backwards, uneducated, and will probably rape your men and kill your women if you come around.

I already do tell people that, but I don't limit it to Arkansas. That's how I describe the south generally. :poke:

Good, when Yankees from Connecticut move to Arkansas the average IQ of both states drops. Stay the fuck out.

I lost my train of thought on that post, my actual point was that many who aren't academically gifted, but certainly capable students, often have the interest and determination to present material in ways that capture the attention of the students. In fact, there's something to be said for teachers that found some difficulties in learning; as they had to try different ways to gain the knowledge they successfully accomplished. Sometimes the 'brilliant' have trouble with students that don't catch on, often offering no alternative ways to master the material.

I agree. I'm not brilliant by any means, but I have to say I taught to the smart kids as a teaching assistant in grad school. I really just "get" how a kid couldn't understand the material. I just thought it was so basic (economics).
