I have it on good authority that it was just the Founding Fathers rolling over in their graves.

My son is in Fairfax and works in MD. So far he hasn't called me back. I ran next door and watched the news for a few minutes, they are reporting no injuries so I'm thankful.

I'm just hoping all the beautiful buildings and monuments survived and no one was hurt. Those old structures weren't built for quakes.

It was 90 miles from DC.

Now the USGS is calling it a 5.9 magnitude quake.

Just got through to his gf who works at hotel at Reagan International. The building swayed and rolled, but seems ok. She spoke to my son and his building was evacuated, they didn't know if they were going back in or had to wait for engineers to check it out.

It was the seismic shift caused by Washington DC reversing course and finally, at long last, moving to the right.

At least one thing was predictable (see highlighted line):

Quake rocks Washington area, felt on East Coast

Aug 23, 2:56 PM EDT

WASHINGTON (AP) -- A 5.9 magnitude earthquake centered in Virginia forced evacuations of all the monuments on the National Mall in Washington and rattled nerves from Georgia to Martha's Vineyard, the Massachusetts island where President Barack Obama is vacationing. No injuries were immediately reported.

(snip)

Obama and many of the nation's leaders were out of town on August vacation when the quake struck at 1:51 p.m. EDT. The shaking was felt on the Martha's Vineyard golf course as Obama was just starting a round.

Where does he work? DC itself? Govt or private?

Where does he work? DC itself? Govt or private? He works for an association that lobbies. ;) He collects and collates data. I've not been there yet, he just said about an hour from Fairfax, 1/2 from downtown DC, in MD.

Spoke to him about 10 minutes ago, back at work. Said it was weird and a bit freaky. We get tremors of New Madrid from time-to-time, but pretty far distance.

The earthquake was a message from God stating that you need to support Rick Perry for President -- God's own choice!

In a prepared statement, President Obama announced that the earthquake was centered on the Bush Fault.

He added that it would have been worse if not for the Stimulus.
