Royal Navy ordered to turn ship's guns around - because they were pointing at Michelle Obama's hotel room

A British Royal Navy ship was ordered to turn its guns around because they were parked pointing at a hotel room Michelle Obama was staying in.
Fearing the First Lady might be in danger, minders ordered the captain of the HMS Edinburgh stationed in Cape Town, South Africa, to switch them away from her five-star suite.

The U.S. agents have since been accused of overreacting after it emerged the Sea Dart missiles were, in fact, loaded with blanks having been used during a ceremony in honour of a sailor who had died.

Former Royal Navy officer Mike Critchley told the Daily Mirror: 'This is typical American Secret Service going over the top.

'I would have thought that they could trust their British allies to not put a missile through the bedroom window of the First Lady. It is unfortunate that this happened at an extremely sad time for the ship.'

Mrs Obama was on an official visit to South Africa in June and was staying in a luxury suite at the five star Table Bay Hotel.

The boat, meanwhile, happened to be in the middle of a ceremonial routine to remember Lieutenant Sara Hellawell, a 26-year-old whose body was found onboard a few days before.

That did not stop the agents raging at them, saying: 'You can’t point those guns at the First Lady.'

Just because you're paranoid, la, doesn't mean they aren't actually out to get you.

Confusing article. Guns pointed at First Lady's room then mentions Sea Dart missles which are surface to air missles, which was it? Regardless the Secret Service does go over the top in protecting every one they are responsible for as they take it very, very seriously.

From the daily mail, stories from it very early make sense, and when they are having a slow news day (atleast once a week) they have a "x gives you cancer" headline, where 'x' is a random food/drink and so forth.

Fuck her. Too bad the guns didn't fire prior to being turned. And fuck the CinC who is in charge of ordering the guns be turned. His motto is: Screw our friends and support our enemies.

As much as you might like it to be true, gunni, it was not the CinC that ordered the guns be turned. It was the United States Secret Service. PS. Don't mess with the Secret Service.

It actually is the Secret Service that is in charge and makes these decisions.

A colleague's son is an agent on the detail for a former Pres. (27 agents for him & 18 for the Mrs.) and it is surprising the authority the Secret Service has in situations that they take as any possible safety threat to their charges.

And the biggest news that seems to come from this thread (aside from the fact that whoever wanted the guns turned, is ridiculously paranoid as the OP implied) is that the United States Secret Service has any auhority at all to order the British Navy to do anything at all.

As usual, you have trouble in the comprehension area, don't you, la? But, I agree with you. I don't think the Secret Service has any "auhority" to order anything of the British Navy but they certainly have the authority to protect the First Lady by whatever methods and actions they deem necessary. I would think the turning of the guns was handled professionally and with all due diplomatic considerations. Do you have evidence it was not? Nothing paranoid about that. But your paranoia is hanging out for the whole board to see. Once again.

I'm sure that it was handled in a diplomatic fashion as PB suggested. I'm sure the Secret Service asked and if they did not get satisfactory action from their British leasions, a phone call to superiors would handle it.

Paranoid? Imagine if a good friend of yours had a weapon pointed in the direction of someone you would protect such as a family member. Would the friend telling you that the weapon was unloaded or only loaded with blanks. Would that suffice for you, or would you want the weapon NOT pointed in your loved one's direction?
