Here is a local story on that topic Avatar, The article is from last year, but the Christmas Cash for Kids fires up after Thanksgiving and even with the lousy Obama economy - I suspect the folks will come thru again

For the 34th consecutive year, some needy area children will have gifts under the tree on Christmas morning thanks to a drive by a local radio station and the generosity of the Frederick (http://www.debatepolicy.com/sections/local/communities/frederick.htm) County community.

Christmas Cash (http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?storyid=113309#) for Kids, started in 1976 by the Frederick (http://www.debatepolicy.com/sections/local/communities/frederick.htm) station Z104 and picked up by WFMD when the station was sold, finished up its last push for funds Friday night with $150,633 raised. WFMD collected $858,811.06 between 2001 and 2009. Totals for the 26 years under Z104 were not available. Last year, WFMD collected $136,386.40.
Bob Miller, host of the station's Morning News Express and Christmas Cash for Kids Participant since his days with Z104, said the number of eligible children who will receive gifts this year is the largest it's ever been at more than 2,300.

"It's just tough," Miller said. "The last thing you do not want to do is give up Christmas for the children. I have two kids, and I'd never want to have to tell them that they don't have Christmas coming."

The drive is coordinated with the Salvation Army (http://www.fredericknewspost.com/sections/news/display.htm?storyid=113309#), which signs up applicants and screens them to make sure they're qualified.
Miller said the campaign benefits from the Salvation Army's tax-exempt status as well, allowing for the purchase of more items, which include toys as well as clothing. He said bulk discounts are also worked out with retailers.
