View Full Version : What would you want to win?

These types of forums are a dime a dozen. If one were going to have a contest, what would you REALLY want to win? Some money is always first on the mind, but I can't offer much more than say like $50. What would be other good ideas?

Without being outlandish - what would prompt you to be eager about joining a contest? And with that in mind, what are good contests...

Most posts?

Best single post on a subject?

Come up with some ideas, folks, and I'll make it happen...

Just moving this to the front. I would like to have another contest of some sort, but not sure what the contest should be and what the winner should receive...

I thought about offering a picture of Abbey and I posing in our underwear, but I didn't want Jim to run the risk of being hospitalized. You know that side effect that the Viagra commercial warns you to seek medical attention for...

LOl! We can go by the name "G'Abbey".

(But I think you can find younger, hotter women to pose with than me).

#1 - What should the contest be

#2 - What should the winner receive (within reason)

#1: Who can distribute more DP bumper stickers, verified with pictures.

#2: A new digital cammer awarded by Jim.

And actually, how about a bumper sticker design contest, first?

So you will then have bumper stickers for members to distribute in their local area, for the second contest?

Wow, someone would REALLY have to impress me to offer a digital cam, at least one that isn't sold at CVS! I like the Flip camera, and see them often offered in contests, but I don't think I could swing it right now. I was thinking more in the $50 ranger, and maybe a little higher if it were an extended contest that allowed me a little time to save the funds.

I like the idea of a bumper sticker, but like you said, it would need to be awfully good for anyone to want to put it on their car. And as far as I know, we only have one or 2 members here with experience in graphics...

But THESE are the ideas I was looking for, excellent ideas to get me thinking!!!

But THESE are the ideas I was looking for, excellent ideas to get me thinking!!!The idea is to promote the site and get the name out there. Then hopefully get more members. There's alot more expensive ways to do it than bumper stickers and digital cammers.

And you really don't know - maybe only one or two members have any graphics experience, but how many know someone else, who does?

Once you get the bumper stickers designed you can sell them after you make yourself a cafe press shop.... Get the t-shirts going, the hats, bumper stickers, mugs, none of which you pay for at all until someone orders them! With the funds from the shop, you can buy a nice digital cammer to offer up as a prize.

Have made locally to you, and give each person in the contest, 50 of these stickers to distribute. Whoever first verifies the most distribution via photos, wins the contest!

You gotta make the prize something people are going to want to make effort for. Fifty bucks doesn't quite do that.

I know that all too well, but I can't offer what I don't have! I figured a smaller sized contest, like "best post" on a subject, or similar - this way the winner is making approximately $50 or the value, simply for making a good post. I really can't afford the whole shebang of shirts, hats and cameras - yet, but would love to! I guess I really wasn't looking to bring in new members, while that would certainly be welcome... but more trying to get the members we do have interested in posting, and getting a little buzz going around the place. Hell, I know I'd like to join a contest where it's something as simple as posting and winning small, but I can't very well pay myself!!

I'll be "thinking" about all the ideas, so I hope others will toss in ideas like Red.

Amazon gift card, towards purchase of said camera. The recipient could then snap and download the bumper stickers. LOL!

Have a contest to see who can get the most new members to join in say a month. At the end of the month whomever has the most verified members gets provincially named a moderator, because you're going to need more mods if we grow anyway.

By the way, I'm a member on a message board with 20K + members which HAD a politics forum but it was deleted by request of advertisers and all those posters are looking for a new "home"

$50 buys you a couple hundred bumper stickers printed locally, for the larger contest, cafe press sales profits buy you the cammer.

The smaller posting contest you mention, I see no problem with that either, as yet another contest too.

I'm just spitballing for ya.

I wouldn't want anyone soliciting members from elsewhere. I get pissed off when I find someone posting links without first asking, or sending PM's to the masses trying to get them to go elsewhere. I want more members as well, but I would prefer it be done in a manner where it doesn't piss anyone off. I had a contest like that a LONG time back, probably in 2004 or so at USMB. There is a referral system built right into vB to allow for tracking of referrals sent here.

If it's a large forum and membership as you say, and they don't have a politics section, I wouldn't mind forking over a little $ to advertise. Do you know the mods/owners there?

I'll start looking around again for decent places to advertise, maybe get a new member or 2. But any money spent will come from my already lame contest award! :coffee:

Yep. As someone who's always posted on multiple boards, I've never solicited members to any. I make it known that I do post on more than one, if anyone asks me, I give them links I think might interest them. That is my limit. They have to ask me.

This place is a HUGE site. When I say 20K members, I'm not exaggerating. I was a mod over there for years but gave it up because I just didn't want to put that kind of time into their board anymore. They used to have a polices forum, it was pretty popular, but their advertisers preferred they not have it, so they got rid of it. Many, MANY, of their posters post on other boards, and there wouldn't be any poaching because they wouldn't leave that board. Yes I know the owner, and most of the admins and moderators. I wouldn't post an open invitation on the board because there are a lot of idiots on that board I don't want anywhere near this place. It would be select invitations to my closest couple of hundred posting friends that posted in the politics forum.

Really, really, really, Jim is missing the boat in not snapping this right up. Hell, he's missed the boat for months in not making you a mod. Well, according to many of your fans on other sites, okay, maybe not fans, more like detractors that you pm'd with, including some you posted recently, he did offer that, but you didn't want. Right? I was going to direct this solely to you, but if anyone at all should know of a good place for advertising, where our type of site would be allowed, and you think may attract new members - please shoot a PM my way with the name of the place, who I should contact, a link of course... I'd travel to Connecticut, and it appears you would, but I'd be surprised of we were able to get 2 more, or even one!

To be honest, I always thought it would be awesome to have some sort of board get together, but the logistics are terrible. But I'd be willing to travel and spend a little money to make it happen. I'm not so sure others would want to spend a nickel to meet me though! LOL We'd have to get all the ladies to agree to meet somewhere I suppose, give others a little incentive.

Bumper stickers are fairly cheap to get made, but the real question is whether or not someone would actually use them. As much as I love my site, I ain't putting ANY sticker on my truck, but that's just me. As for graphics that could be made into a bumper sticker, this is all that I would have to start, without having to have someone make another. Seriously though, would any of you place this on the back of your vehicle? And more importantly, would it really even get one person to visit as a result?

In theory, these all sounds great. But I've had contests in the past to make even smaller graphics, say a contest to design the best 125x125 button or 468x60 banner - no takers. And for as many political sites I belong to, I personally would never buy any of the above, whether to just have or to support a site! Just being honest! LOL Hell, I can't get even get people to click on any types of ads here!

Set yourself up a cafe press online store (http://cafepress.com/), it costs nothing to do. Tell the folks you want designs for mugs, tees, hoodies, nighties, caps and etc. You KNOW you wanna see a gabosaurus nightie! Folks can make them about their online persona, or just about the board, or even about each other. You have no idea the fun you're poo-pooing.
