LAS VEGAS – Conservative bloggers are on heightened alert following a string of so-called "SWAT-ing" incidents and are taking precautionary measures to ensure they don't fall victim to the potentially dangerous prank as the political blogosphere prepares for a heated election season.
"SWAT-ing" refers to a hoax in which an anonymous prankster falsely reports a violent crime at an unsuspecting person's home, prompting a police team to respond to the location believing a dangerous situation is at hand.
The illegal practice has in recent months targeted well-known conservative writers and commentators, including Erick Erickson, founder of the blog RedState.com -- who claims he was eating dinner with his family in May when a SWAT team surrounded his home following such a false 911 call.
The growing trend, which some say could one day prove deadly, had conservatives on edge at the annual RightOnline conference of right-wing bloggers and activists in Las Vegas this weekend.
"What they're clearly trying to do is dampen down free speech, but it goes beyond that -- it's putting people's physical safety in jeopardy," said Ali Akbar, who heads a group called the National Bloggers Club made up of conservative online writers.

Could be a tactic thought up and encouraged by one of the Soros's think groups or even the scum himself!

I've been following these incidents since they started and the follow-ups by those swated. Probably the most comprehensive coverage, meaning lots of links to others:

These people are nuts. This democratic consultant who posts on the Daily Kos,is apparently a known preditor. He should be in jail. From your link.

As Andrew Breitbart noted, this happened to two people within the course of a single week: a man in New Jersey and myself. Both of us had had contact with Andrew Breitbart. Both of us were writing about the same story. And both of us received email threats days before we were swatted. The threat to me said (http://patterico.com/2011/06/23/mail-i-get-mail/), in part: “Please think about your family. This story is not worth it. I can assure you that.” . . .
Writing at Daily Kos, Rauhauser suggests I should be harassed online (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/07/19/996202/-Patterico-s-Personal-Pipsqueak).
Three days after I was swatted, Rauhauser wrote a post titled “Patterico’s Penalization” (http://www.dailykos.com/story/2011/07/04/991382/-Weinergate-Patterico-s-Penalization) that made bizarre accusations about me, and accused me of working with a “cyberstalker” named Seth Allen — a blogger who had criticized Brett Kimberlin so tenaciously that Kimberlin (frivolously) sued Allen for defamation.

I learned this during the last election. Tell you what...the activists that worked on Hillary Clinton's campaign have been around the block. Just visiting their message board during the primaries was an eye opener. A very smart and savvy crew for sure.

Learned all kinds of shady tactics Obama's minions used. Even got directed to a website (Little green footballs...or something like that)...that exposed a lot of Astro turf campaigns (backed by Axlerod) including the companies that backed them...hired them...and their online handles... also the hacker that stole Palin's emails and more. Crazy crazy stuff.

You could form your own posse and try to make an arrest yourself. Although...that didn't turn out too well for code pink here when they tried it. I believe they ran into trouble with the Secret Service AND the SWAT team.

Why elect a governor if not to enforce the laws of the state? Why have law enforcement if not to enforce the laws of the state?

Just because you have a soft spot for illegals doe not mean that Jan Brewer is mentally deficient.

PS....Hitler's laws were not laws voted upon by the majority of the people. You make it sound like Jan Brewer is walking around imitating Obama, who is truly more like Hitler than Arizona's governor.

It is amazing to see liberals like you get so upset over elected officials trying to enforce the LAWS on the book

It is clear you are losing the debate when you have to pull the Hitler card from the bottom of the deck

Why not do away with laws altogether...that is what the simple minded or liberals would have us do. What is a law today is not a law at all tomorrow if it doesn't fit their "if it feels good do it" mentality. They are the ones that are sick...not Mrs. Brewer. She is a true Patriot...THEY are nothing more than cowardly enemies of the State.

Smarter than WE THE PEOPLE are?! I don't think so!!!! THEY are not even smarter than your average bear but they do have one thing in common. Like the bear, they can be a huge pest (if you feed them) and the trouble bears are usually the ones looking for a handout all the time!

He spent nearly 20 years in federal prison, for bombings and was a suspect in a murder. Here's an article from 1994 that gives some idea of what he is like:

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1994-03-13/features/9403130267_1_brett-kimberlin-prison-convicted

Sunday watch.Kimberlin, With A Book On The Way, Stumps For Immigrant's Cause
March 13, 1994|By James Warren.
WASHINGTON — "So, Jimmy, how are 'ya?" said the flat Midwestern voice on the phone last week.
In the past 15 or so years, there are just three people who've regularly called me Jimmy: My mother, colleague Mike Royko, and Brett Kimberlin, convicted drug smuggler, perjurer and bomber.

http://articles.chicagotribune.com/images/pixel.gif

This was Kimberlin, a middle-class kid from Indianapolis who drove Dan Quayle slightly nuts, by alleging from prison that Quayle had once bought drugs from him. When the inmate planned a press conference to expand on the claims just a few days before the 1988 presidential election, he found himself placed in isolation, and thus censored, due to what was later shown to be overzealous intervention by the then-boss of the Bureau of Prisons.

Kimberlin was behind bars because in 1981, after being convicted on lesser charges in two earlier trials, he was convicted for a series of 1978 bombings around the Indianapolis Speedway, one of which tore off most of a man's leg.

He subsequently kept regional phone companies and AT&T in business via jailhouse lawyering that included incessant contact with reporters, including myself. (When we finally met last week, I had to ask if prison pay phones now had call-waiting.)

The issues he raised ranged from aspects of his own trial-certain prosecution testimony was elicited, unusually, under hypnosis-to claims of marijuana sales to then-law student Quayle. The latter inspired attention in Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury" strip and vigorous Quayle denials.

Kimberlin was released from prison on parole in November and is living in Maryland with his mother. The son of a lawyer, he's working on a book (with a nice advance and a writer from the esteemed New Yorker magazine, no less), tooling around in a sleek Mercedes-Benz and largely focused on a new legal cause, even as he presses his own litigation against former Prisons Director J. Michael Quinlan and then-Quinlan spokesman Loye Miller, an undistinguished former Chicago Sun-Times reporter.

That crusade, which has enlisted the support of several big-ticket attorneys and has included Kimberlin lobbying Sen. Paul Simon (D-Ill.) and others, stems from his prison friendship with David Sushansky, an emigre from the former Soviet Union who was convicted of heroin possession.

Sushansky is caught in what appears to be a criminal justice nightmare. When his prison term was over, his country refused to take him back due to the conviction. But he's stuck in an Immigration and Naturalization Service camp in Louisiana because the INS won't let him go due to his conviction. Conceivably, he could be in INS detention forever.

There may be more than 100 other immigrant felons in similar straits-stuck in U.S. prisons because their homelands won't allow them back and we won't release them into the U.S. population. Even though they've completed their prison terms, they are trapped by a provision of our immigration laws pertaining to "non-releasable aggravated felons."

Kimberlin has been lobbying on Capitol Hill. "If this doesn't work, I'll get to people at the Justice Department."
For instance?

"Everybody meets with me," he said with a kidding-on-the-square grin.

You’re about to listen to one of the most bone-chilling pieces of audio you will ever hear. At least, it was to me when I first heard it.
It’s a phone call that could have gotten me killed.
In this post you will hear that audio clip. You will also read about a months-long campaign of harassment carried out by at least three individuals: Ron Brynaert, Neal Rauhauser, and Brett Kimberlin — much of it directed at critics of Brett Kimberlin. This harassment includes repeated references to critics’ family members, workplace complaints, publication of personal information such as home addresses and pictures of residences, bogus allegations of criminal activity, whisper campaigns, frivolous legal actions, and frivolous State Bar complaints.
And finally, you will hear a comparison of one of those men’s voices to that of the man who made the call that sent police to my home. And you’ll read a declaration from a forensic audio expert comparing those two voices.
BREITBART TOLD THE STORY JUST BEFORE HE DIED
<center>http://patterico.com/files/2012/05/Breitbart.jpeg (http://patterico.com/files/2012/05/Breitbart.jpeg) </center> In the last radio interview Andrew Breitbart ever gave, on Hugh Hewitt’s radio show, Breitbart talked about a new ruthless tactic (http://townhall.com/talkradio/audioplayer/635515) used by thugs against political opponents:

[O]ne of the things they’ve done to people who have worked with me in the past, including an L.A. prosecutor, is to “SWAT.” That means that they’re spoofing phones, pretending to be somebody else’s phone, calling 911, and saying “I killed somebody” and then the person’s home is met with the guns drawn, the SWAT and the helicopters, in a horrifying act. It’s happened twice: once in New Jersey, once in Los Angeles, with an L.A. County . . . prosecutor who [is] associated with me.”
I am that L.A. County prosecutor. And in this post, you’ll hear the hoax call that sent police to my house, pointing loaded guns at me...

‘Speedway Bomber’: Criminal terrorist Brett Kimberlin was convicted in 1981FROM AN UNDISCLOSED LOCATION
Law enforcement officials have been made aware that convicted terrorist Brett Kimberlin appears to be engaged in an attempt to intimidate me into being silent about his sordid criminal history.

Appropriate precautions have been taken to ensure the safety of my family and others who might be endangered if Kimberlin resorts to violence to accomplish his malicious purposes. At the urging of concerned friends, we have vacated our former residence and I am now blogging from a secret location which Kimberlin will be unable to discover or reach. Nevertheless, we sincerely ask for intercessory prayer, that God will send angels to guard us in this grave crisis.

In fact, this crisis is an answer to prayer: My wife and I had been contemplating whether to leave Maryland, and had asked that God would give us a sign. Guess we got what we prayed for — unexpectedly!

Nevertheless, my sudden relocation — The Mother of All Road Trips, as it were — will involve large expenses. We will have to rent a new house, pay people to pack up the belongings at our former residence, and move everything to the new location.

And where it more or less started regarding media:

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Journalism/2010/10/11/Progressives-Embrace-Convicted-Terrorist

Once dubbed "The Wizard of Odd (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1574161-1,00.html)" by Time Magazine, you may recognize the name Brett Kimberlin for much more than Justice Through Music or Velvet Revolution, especially if you're from Indiana. That's because in 1981, Kimberlin, then the owner of vegetarian restaurant Good Earth, was finally convicted of a week-long bombing spree in Indianapolis, IN in which eight separate bombs caused extensive property damage,
destroyed a police cruiser, and severely maimed a man, which eventually led to the man's suicide. Kimberlin's story has so often been overlooked or understated by the national media, which unfortunately all but failed to follow up on what were later proven by the same journalist who first reported on his story to be mistruths. But locals to IN know exactly what happened and have never forgotten it since. It's time the public got the full story.

Brett Kimberlin, Speedway Bomber
Infamously known as "The Speedway Bomber (http://blogs.indystar.com/starfiles/2010/09/01/the_phantom_spe/)," Brett Kimberlin exploded his eighth and final bomb on September 6, 1978, which nearly blew off the right leg of his victim, Carl DeLong, and seriously injured the man's left leg and right hand, causing his leg to be amputated. DeLong committed suicide two years later, unable to cope with the pain and devastation of his injuries. The victim's wife Sandra later won a civil judgment against Kimberlin for $1.6 million.

Police had immediately suspected Kimberlin in the bombing case. He'd been in trouble since high school, was a suspected drug trafficker and he was already the suspect in a murder that had occurred only months earlier. As the Indianapolis Star (http://www.indystar.com/article/99999999/NEWS06/100919013) recounted recently:
On July 29, 1978, Speedway resident Julia Scyphers, 65, answered a knock at her door. A man she didn't know was standing on her stoop asking about items she'd recently tried to sell at a yard sale. She let him into the garage to look at the items and he shot her in the head.

Mrs. Scypher's husband, Fred, 68, heard the bang and came out in time to see a car pulling out of the driveway. He would later tell police he'd gotten a glimpse of the man who'd come to the door.

When police began looking for a motive in the Scyphers slaying, they found there'd been a recent family clash. Julia Scyphers' daughter, Sandra Barton, had become involved with a man who seemed to Mrs. Scyphers to be inordinately close to one of Barton's young daughters. Mrs. Scyphers told friends she was so concerned that she'd arranged for both of her granddaughters to come live with her. Whether or not Mrs. Scyphers' fears were correct (no charges were ever filed to that effect), this incident led investigators to start looking at Brett C. Kimberlin.
Investigators had learned that Sandra Barton's pre-teen daughter had accompanied Kimberlin, in his 20's, on several out of state trips. When the girl moved in with her grandmother as a protective measure on the family's part, Kimberlin threatened to commit suicide.

Stacy McCain is reporting from his undisclosed location (http://theothermccain.com/2012/06/25/breaking-aaron-walker-victory-in-maryland-emergency-hearing/) that Aaron Walker has essentially had his constitutional right of free speech restored. It’s amazing what a competent judge who doesn’t suggest alley justice can do.

Judge Nelson W. Rupp Jr. presided over today’s hearing, with attorney Reginald W. Bours III (http://www.rbourslaw.com/)representing Walker, who did not attend the hearing at Judicial Center in Rockville. In a brief telephone interview, Walker said that Kimberlin filed a counter-motion that did not address the First Amendment legal issues at stake, but rather “made a bunch of new accusations” against Walker.

UPDATE II: It is important to note that Judge Rupp’s ruling only temporarily permits Walker to speak and write about Kimberlin, pending a July 5 hearing in Maryland state appeals court. Walker is appealing a May 29 ruling by Montgomery County District Court Judge C.J. Vaughey that granted a peace order sought by Kimberlin against Walker.

There’s more at The Other McCain. Convicted felon Kimberlin apparently trumped out a raft of new accusations against Walker, which is par for the course with him, but he may be finally running into a lawfare wall, with several prominent right-of-center attorneys offering Walker pro bono legal assistance. Part of Kimberlin’s schtick is to file lawsuits to drag opponents into expensive litigation to defend themselves. Take that cost away, though, and Kimberlin’s weapon has less bite. Righthaven ran into a similar problem once EFF (https://www.eff.org/) started taking on the burden of defending bloggers against its copyright trolling lawsuits, and is now in all kinds of trouble (http://blog.legalzoom.com/intellectual-property/righthaven-forced-to-sell-copyrights-to-satisfy-debts/). EFF were heroes then; Eugene Volokh has emerged as a hero in the Kimberlin saga (http://www.popehat.com/2012/06/22/kimberlin-lawfare-update-major-pushback-by-aaron-walker-now-with-court-documents/).

Patterico is hinting (http://patterico.com/2012/06/25/aaron-walker-may-speak-about-brett-kimberlin/) of something “interesting” to come in the Walker case.
