I guess the "smart" people solved their $19 billion state budget deficit after all

California lawmakers are considering a new bill that could create a sanctuary state for illegal immigrants seeking protection from Arizona’s strict immigration law.

The Transparency and Responsibility Using State Tools, or TRUST Act, which is currently making its way through the California legislature, would prohibit local law enforcement from turning over illegal immigrants for deportation except for those with serious felony convictions.

Debate over the bill comes after the nation's highest court last month upheld the most controversial provision of the Arizona immigration law -- requiring local police to check the immigration status of anyone they suspect of being in the country illegally. Federal immigration officials have said they will be selective in responding to those calls and have already moved to shield some categories of illegal immigrants nationwide from deportation, but the provision is still on the books in Arizona.

Critics of the California measure call it a "huge mistake," even dangerous. But proponents say local law enforcement should not be “entangled” in enforcing federal immigration law.

“The Trust Act is a good idea for California because we want to position ourselves as the anti-Arizona,” said Angela Chan, a senior staff attorney with the Asian Law Caucus, a San Francisco-based civil rights organization in support of the bill.

Chan also said the Trust Act, sponsored by Democratic Assemblyman Tom Ammiano of San Francisco, seeks to remedy what she described as problems with the Obama administration’s Secure Communities program, which lets local jails conduct immigration checks on everyone who is arrested. The federal program has led to the deportation of thousands of illegal immigrants – many of whom have no criminal records – and has been fiercely criticized by civil rights activists.

“Seven of the 10 people deported under this program have no criminal convictions,” Chan told FoxNews.com.

An ICE spokeswoman, however, disputed that statistic, saying the actual numbers are reversed -- that nearly 75 percent of people deported through Secure Communities have one or more criminal convictions.

Chan said the program’s implementation has “resulted in an undercutting of community policing,” meaning immigrant residents may be afraid to call local law enforcement if they are witnesses or victims of a crime out of fear of deportation.

Good, send them all to California. Then when the border fence gets past Texas, just head North and fence Cali off too! This way we get rid of illegals and a lot of idiots at the same time! :laugh2:

Only ignorant people believe in the concept of a "border fence." It worked real well in East Berlin.
Perhaps the real border fence should be built on the Arizona border.

Was East Berlin trying to prevent the influx of greasy mexicans who violated their laws non-stop and lived off of the freebies of their country?

Most of us, long before this thread surfaced. Already knew Calimexicoia was a Sanctuary state.

So, where's the surprise?

Jerry Brown can't afford to keep cities in his own state out of Bankruptcy. So the legislature does the next, best thing, and allows MORE NON-TAX payers to invade the BROKEN, GOLDEN-STATE?

Good idea California. VOTE FOR IT, AND VOTE OFTEN.

Time to re-examine breaking California up into two states for the umpteenth time lol.
I swear I hate northern California and absolutely despise San Francisco and every liberal politician living there. They have gone completely off the deep end of insanity.

Hopefully, your prayers will be answered one day, when Pelosi, Boxer, and Jerry Brown get to be part of California' BREAK UP by the Northern part of the state...sliding into the Pacific via the San Andreas' fault, or any mild Earthquake that takes place during Nancy's next Botox treatments.

Libs want to show their compassion by feeding and provide them shelter. Get them signed up for welfare benefits and Section 8 housing. and of course getting them a drivers license and getting them registered to vote so they could vote Democrat in every election

They already HAVE voted Democrat. That was part of the agreement With Obama, before he signed that bill, giving Illegals the same rights as REAL, HONEST CITIZENS.

California will eventually become the Home of more Mexican Restaurants than there are in the entire nation of Mexico.
Will anyone be surprised?

Well I hope you are enjoying it. We have a very cool and comfortable weekend ahead of us.

Kind of sad that people are objecting to a piece of legislation that they obviously have not read entirely. The primary premise is creating a place where anyone (of any race or creed) can go to escape profiling and illegal persecution. The idea goes back about 50 years, when Southern states refused to give up on their belief that blacks were "unequal and inferior" despite new federal legislation stating the opposite.
Arizona is merely creating a new "secondary class" of people that they believe are unequal and inferior.

Wrong again. It is creating a sanctuary for people who have broken federal law by entering the country illegally. Plain and simple.
In essence, the state of California is stating we don't care what federal states, just like your "Black" argument. The only difference being the Feds don't want to enforce the law either so California may get away with it.

Eh Gabby, maybe you are not as "smart" as you claim to be. These people are breaking the law by being here

So now you are willing to subsidize law breaking? I suspect your motive is not out of compassion but rather getting more Undocumented Demorcrats in the country, and getting them on the welfare and voting rolls
