The U.S. Navy base at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, will be getting an estimated $40 million communications upgrade, signaling it will continue its mission of holding top suspected terrorists and as a major humanitarian aid base in the region.
The base, also known as Gitmo, will upgrade its limited satellite communications system to an underwater fiber optic line that will stretch from the base to the coast of Florida, according to Pentagon spokesman Army Lt. Col. Todd Breasseale.
The United States has alerted the Cuban government that it intends on starting the project this summer with a survey ship operating off the eastern coast of the country evaluating the expected route, but actual work of installing the cable will being within a couple of years.

The outdated satellite communications system was overburdened with the military court hearing the cases of the top 9/11 plotters and other war-on-terrorism suspects, as well as the ongoing detention operations.
Upgrading to a fiber optic line allows much more bandwidth and a more secure line during bad weather that can hamper satellite communications, according to Breasseale.
While close to the United States, the base is still remote in southeastern Cuba, and is often in the path of severe weather. It generally houses about 6,000 troops and civilians.

But, but, wasn't it supposed to be closed?

Wasn't one of the reasons it couldn't be closed because the housing of these terrorists couldn't be pawned off on other countries? No one wanted to take them them because they were too dangerous?

The Navy should do as everyone in the Obama non-thinking party says, and close Gitmo NOW.

Move all U.S. Military, and their dependents back to CONUS, leave the Present Terrorist Occupants there to fend for themselves....still locked up.
And send the Navy, Marines, and Army Helo Training Command down there to provide 'HELLFIRE' missile practice on their residences.

It would save us the CABLE, ELECTRIC, and FOOD bills, as well as saving us Millions that was about to be spent for the New Soccer Field.

Change the name of GUANTANIMO to be OBAMINO...Land of the Incredibly Stupid.

Al Qaeda targets innocents while my comments are towards terrorists. Sorry if you think they should be extended rights of any kind. They should have just been shot in the head on the battlefield. They are now being treated how we treat our pigs on farms, but they don't even deserve that much.

Wrong again jafar00. We don't THINK they are extremists. We know they ARE, and you simply are doing a terrible job trying to defend them.

Not exactly.

No one wanted to take them because they couldn't think of any justificiation for giving them even five minutes more of breathing time.

And they still can't.

Only strange part is, evidently someone in the U.S. still can.

BTW, the only part of Gitmo that was supposed to be closed according to the Campaigner-in-Chief, was the terrorist detention facility. But Gitmo is a major U.S. Naval base. It was there long before the Detention Facility was, and will be there long after it's gone.

I'm doing a terrible job of defending them because I am not trying to defend them. I have been condemning them on a regular basis.
