My guess is that his life was like a feather in the wind with no clear direction and being bounced around by forces that he couldn't/didn't control.

I just always took it to symbol destiny and forrests life coming around in a full circle. He found the feather when he met Jenny and picked it up in the beginning of their relationship. Lost it to the wind after reading a book to his and Jenny's son at the end of the movie.

I don't recall the feather at the beginning, but I always understood that to mean the dead person you're thinking about is near by. I see them in odd spots when my father is on my mind.

I saw it at the beginning, and the end as a symbol of how FLEETING, Fast, and Unpredictable Life is, and can be for all of us.
