More than 1.7 million illegal immigrants could become eligible for tentative legal status Wednesday when President Obama’s non-deportation policy goes into effect, and after initial fears that the program would backfire, immigrant advocates are urging young immigrants to sign up.

Activists say the policy is the biggest change on immigration in decades, and it has roiled the political landscape, solidifying Mr. Obama’s support among Hispanics and leaving presumptive Republican presidential nominee Mitt Romney (http://www.debatepolicy.com/topics/mitt-romney/) struggling to say what he would do.

On Tuesday, the Obama administration (http://www.debatepolicy.com/topics/barack-obama/) laid out final details, including relaxed education standards that set a low bar.
Under the rules, illegal immigrants in job training or who have enrolled in a GED course are eligible — a lesser requirement than obtaining a high school diploma or equivalency certificate.

The government begins taking applications Wednesday, and immigrant rights groups and members of Congress (http://www.debatepolicy.com/topics/congress/) from both parties have scheduled legal clinics across the country to help determine whether immigrants qualify and to aid them in filling out the forms.

Would they suddenly be eligible to vote ... in time, say, for your forthcoming election ?

Even if not .. this is obviously a ruse to increase Obama's voting base amongst ethnic minorities .. as well as a would-be trap to try and get Romney alienated in the minds of those voters, should he find reason to speak out against it. OR, if he DOESN'T, maybe the trap is to lose Romney support from people concerned with immigration ?

Either way, Obama's apparently engaging in a form of dirty tricks campaign. But that's Lefties for you ... campaigning as benevolent, but with hidden malicious intent.

That GD traitor's actions prove he will do anything, sell out anything to buy more votes. If he is not voted out ,then charged with his treason, it'll be the greatest injustice ever carried out in his nation! If this was the 1950's you couldnt find one in a million people that wouldnt call him on his treason! He does not defend this nation or its Constitution instead he attacks both.. -Tyr

Your title repeats a tactical error made by conservatives. You need to stress the word ILLEGAL. Spanish/Portuguese language US newspapers substitute "anti-immigrant measure" for "anti-illegal measure". We need to start calling amnesty advocates "pro-human trafficking".

Immigrants favor Obama by a rate of 9 to 1. The problem is getting them signed up and voting.

As for the original article referenced, it is always intriguing to see what the Mooney Times has to say about things.

There may be a silver lining to this...after Romney wins and issues his own Executive order for ICE to do the job it's getting paid for, we'll know exactly where all these illegals are for the roundup.

GABBY. How right you are. Which explains why Holder, and Obama with the Dems need that VOTER ID thingy....ignored, dropped, hidden, and forgotten by the Justice Department....until after the election.

Just think of the number of ILLEGALS who will be DEPRIVED of their Illegal votes!

Why should I care who Marco Rubio is? I don't live in Florida.

Most legal immigrants are against illegal immigration. Because the illegals take their jobs by working for cheaper wages.
More information you will never learn hidden in your gated community.

To be fair, V4R, Gabby didn't say she didn't know who Rubio is, just that she didn't care who he is....which could be a tactical mistake in the future.
