GALLILANO, La. -- A father and his infant son were killed Wednesday afternoon in a shootout in southern Lafourche Parish.

Deputies said they were investigating a complaint on West 136th Street in Galliano.

According to Lafourche officials, one of the deputies was shot in the shoulder as he entered a mobile home.

The deputy and another officer shot back, authorities said.

Albert Dwain Dodge, 39, and his infant son, Typhoon, were killed in the shootout.

Officials said the deputy was taken to Lady of the Sea Hospital in Galliano. He had a severe bruise to his upper-right chest, but he escaped serious injury thanks to a bulletproof vest, officials said.

Dodge had an extensive criminal history, Lafourche officials said, including an outstanding warrant on contempt of court charges and many previous arrests with charges ranging from felony theft to manslaughter to domestic abuse battery.

The investigation has been turned over to state police.

Sheriff Craig Webre was out of town at the time, but he was flying back to Lafourche Parish on Wednesday afternoon.
