China brought its first aircraft carrier into service Tuesday, raising the country’s military capability amid heightened tensions with its regional neighbors.

Christened Liaoning -- after the port where the carrier was significantly overhauled after being bought from Ukraine -- this new addition to China’s navy is not large compared to America’s super carriers, but could still potentially have an impact on territorial disputes in the region.

“The aircraft carrier will play an important role in China's settlement of islands disputes and defense of its maritime rights and interests,” said Chinese naval expert, Li Jie, in an interview with Chinese newspaper, People’s Daily.

and this is great reason to cut the defense budget even more..

If Obama gets his wish, our Navy will someday be reduced to one leaky rowboat with one broken oar.

Grabbing land is the predicate of china's power. My reason and experience tell me this is anything but new, more likely just a glimpse of what they actually have.

Well it is the only aircraft carrier they have as far as I know. It also points to exactly how foolish our relations with them have been. As I predictedover thirty-nine years ago , they will be become the number one power and will immediately start taking territory! Decades of various people telling me that was crazy talk is about to be shown to be idiotcy from all of them!-Tyr

China can bring as many carriers as the want online. As a Navy veteran. I have no fear. Nor any reason to fear China's aircraft carrier capabilities.

They have a VERY LONG WAY to go to even begin to match the effectiveness, or worksmanship WE place in our Nuclear Carrier fleet.
And, it goes without mentioning. The People who operate our Carriers, from the lowest seaman who cleans off the tables on the Mess decks, to the Multi-colored shirts who operate the Flight deck, and of course...our Pilots.

We..the U.S.A. and Our Navy have more than SEVENTY YEARS of aircraft carrier experience. And China, Russia, or even France will have a long, hard road ahead of them in catching up with not only the U.S.. But the U.K.

They can rattle whatever they want, much like Iran. But...I feel very comfortable, and secure with what I know to be the GREATEST NAVY on Earth.

Call me crazy if you like. Learn for yourself and merely watch the MILITARY CHANNEL when they broadcast Documentaries about Our CARRIERS.

My friend I admire your spirit but you ignore theobama effect and over 6 trilion in new debt. You watch how much more our military, Navy included wil be downsized and diminished. Even if obama fails to get another term that --6 TRILLION DOLLARS IS GOING TO FORCE HUGE CUTS IN MILITARY SPENDING AS IT ALREADY HAS!
Our military eats billions like a fat child eats candy. And we as a nation are about to face a hard financial reality thanks to obama's deliberate borrowing to waste ,steal and spend! Besides China will first face off against japan , phillippines or somebody that we will likely refuse to support with our Navy. Obama would back down against any play China would make in the South China Seas.-Tyr

I meant land grabbing is the socialist model; just look at that steamroller incident. Google Whitehorse village; there's a great bbc video series documenting China's socialist/capitalist agendas in action. Not surprisingly, it's rife with corruption and self-serving agendas. Conversely, the overall plan is an incredibly efficient model. That this village was sited for urban development thanks to its proximity to the three gorges dam and the locks which allow for incredibly effiecient barge transportation and electricity for industry. It's a lot to consider, both good and bad. I mean, sure it's bad to steal people's land, but then the whole project would have never happened. Mirror that with say, the Hoover dam and the displacement of native american tribes-- it's very similar. Perhaps that'd make a good thread on its own, and I can avoid derailing this one.
My point regarding history was as much that of China's expansionist policy as it was military tech being publically revealed. You know as well as I that what a country, our's for example, actually reveals is likely 10-20 years behind. I have it on good authority, the kind that need stay anon, that China has some military technology that is equal to what we have.

China bought that then unfinished carrier when Bill Clinton was president. I remember very well discussing it on an AOL forum. I figured it would have been finished 10 years ago. Seems they are not in much of a rush to have that substandard ship.

I doubt it will be much of a factor with various island nations such as Taiwan.

China needs our buying power. Imagine going to the store and finding all the stuff you want to buy is no longer there. We buy a lot of things from China.

It could be a huge factor with China's interests in retaking territory the called theirs -the Philippines - which Ive long maintained they will seek to take over first before any other. Right now they will use it to project the power to come from them. And that increased power is coming at an ever increasing speed. Our loss of power is moving directly into their gain. My guess is they will first start with the Philippines or the disputed islands that Japan claims. If obama gets a second term they will make a land grabbing move.. He is weak and cowardly and would not do a damn thing about it and they know it because he will be begging them for more trillions to spend/waste!-Tyr

I have no doubt that they have some kind of secret weapons. They now have a working anti-aircraft carrier missile designed specificly to sink -American - carriers! Hows that for telegraphing who they think they will have to fight someday? History has always shown that the new number one almost always continues the beat the newly fallen country farther down. China has recently been attempting to get a more secure stand with Russia ! As you know they've been adversaries for centuries. If China makes a secure pact with Russia we can expect to see it move rather quickly after that WITH AGGRESSION TO GRAB MORE TERRITORY, AND POSSIBLY EVEN TO CHALLENGE US DIRECTLY! All that could happen within the next decade if our economic fall is not reversed. People need to get used to the concept that our military is going to be cut and cut deeply every year for at least a decade and possibly even two decades in order to try to pay down this 16 trillion debt we have. Some say we arent now but within five years we will not be the number one power in the world, China will be! Current destroying policies have put us on that road and unless stopped our fall will be quick, so quick that it will shock the world.-Tyr

Yeah, this thing keeps popping up in the news every now and then. I know we have discussed this same carrier here at Debate Policy a few times already.
It's a third rate Russian vessel that they are using as a training tool. Aboutime has it right. The Chinese have a long way to go. It will be another 20 years before these guys even have a carrier group that nobody laughs at. Even so, we need to remain vigilant in our own naval dominance.

As for our buying power and reliance on the Chinese...were you around when everything we bought was made in Taiwan? Or Mexico?
If it's not China, it will be some other country so I wouldn't worry too much about going to the store and finding it empty of goods.

Gotta disagree when you say I Ignore the Obama effect, and the SIX TRILLION.

I know, full well about the downsizing. Especially living in a massive Navy, and Marine Corps community like this one.

I remember the very same things taking place just before I retired in 1995, when Clinton and Congress forced, and paid Experienced Senior leaders, and career oriented people OUT after the First Gulf War.
Knowing what I know, and personally see, and hear from Active Duty people who live all around me.
They are not going to take what Obama, and Congress are doing...Without a Fight.
And they certainly are not going to allow OBAMA followers to scare them, or the American people with Chinese Threats that DO NOT EXIST.

Obama and the Whiners in the Pentagon have gotten together. Using the Downsizing threats on One hand, blaming them on Republicans whom they insist...are FILIBUSTERING, while the reality is. HARRY REID and the other ASS HOLE DEMOCRATS in power only think of their own political careers.
We all know what is happening. And the only resolution will be decided in November. One way, or another.
