High Speed Chase Ends With Suspect Running Out Of SUV

DENVER -- Adams County authorities say two home invasion suspects are in custody after police spent all morning blocking off a neighborhood and locking down several nearby schools to search for them.

Denver police are not disclosing the circumstances surrounding their arrests other than to say that one was taken into custody just after 2 p.m. near the Conifer Landing apartment complex -- a building they had been focusing on all morning.

Police said that they had been in phone contact with one of the suspects and that negotations eventually led to his arrest.

No one has been injured in the incident.

The series of events began about 2:30 a.m. when Denver police received a 911 call reporting a home invasion in the 4900 block of South Ulster Street.

The residents said a man armed with an Uzi sub-machine gun entered their apartment, tied them up and took money, a computer and other items. The occupants apparently knew the gunman, and this was not a random event, police said.

Shortly after 7 a.m., officers began chasing a white sport utility vehicle in Adams County. The high-speed pursuit ended when the SUV driver stopped the vehicle and bailed out in a parking lot of the Conifer Landing apartment complex on West 80th Avenue.

A red vehicle was seen leaving the area at about the same time.

Dozens of SWAT and police officers swarmed into the neighborhood, blocking several streets. SWAT officers searched the apartment complex and nearby area for any signs of the suspects. The search was centered in the 8300 block of Conifer Road.

Residents in the area were advised to make sure their doors were locked and to report any suspicious activity. Several schools in the area were on lock down as a precaution but the lockdown was lifted at about 1:30 p.m.

The men are now in Denver police custody. They have not been identified.

It was not immediately clear how officers determined the person being chased was possibly connected with the early-morning home invasion.

If criminals have Uzis, why don't homeowners have Uzis?

Oh... that's right... they're "too dangerous" for you and me to have.
