To a certain point, it will help you in Brazil. If some teenage punk, even if a member of a gang/cartel pulls a knife to rob you and notices you have a loaded gun, you'll be left alone. If you actually use it and the punk is related to the wrong person, that's a different situation. Especially after dark, being armed will help you. The key to survival in South American cities is to NEVER look nervous, even if being robbed.
