View Full Version : Ron Paul: 'Our Constitution Has Failed'

I don't always agree with Ron Paul, but admit he sometimes comes up with good ideas. He's not my cup of tea for a 'complete politician' (not many are I suppose), but I will admit that more in Washington need to pay attention to the COTUS and not trample on it like it never existed. He made his last speech in front of Congress and didn't hold back! I'll give the man kudos for sticking to his principles and refusing to ever budge. I'm afraid that someday I'm going to miss the 'ol bastard and wish more were like him.

Rep. Ron Paul, the iconic libertarian congressman from Texas, has delivered what will most likely be his final address to Congress.

In a sprawling, 52-minute speech to the House chamber, Paul lambasted U.S. government, politicians and special interests, declaring that the U.S. people must return to virtue before the government allows them to be free, and that the Constitution has failed to limit the scope of an authoritarian bureaucracy.

"Our Constitution, which was intended to limit government power and abuse, has failed," Paul said. "The Founders warned that a free society depends on a virtuous and moral people. The current crisis reflects that their concerns were justified."

For the retiring Republican, 77, the "current crisis" isn't quite what it is for other members of Congress, who routinely use that word to describe the economic recession that followed the 2008 financial crash. To the Texas Republican, that's part of it, but the causes are deeper, and it's also a crisis of governmental authoritarianism and the vanishing of personal liberty.

"If it's not accepted that big government, fiat money, ignoring liberty, central economic planning, welfarism, and warfarism caused our crisis, we can expect a continuous and dangerous march toward corporatism and even fascism with even more loss of our liberties," said Paul, an obstetrician-gynecologist by training.

The problem isn't just government's size, but its use of force, both in starting preemptive wars and as it coerces U.S. citizens with police power. To Paul, this is the fault of Americans who no longer prioritize liberty, and it will lead to the unraveling of orderly society unless people change.

"Restraining aggressive behavior is one thing, but legalizing a government monopoly for initiating aggression can only lead to exhausting liberty associated with chaos, anger and the breakdown of civil society," Paul said. "We now have a standing army of armed bureaucrats in the TSA, CIA, FBI, Fish and Wildlife, FEMA, IRS, Corp of Engineers, etc., numbering over 100,000 civil society."

.....

Throughout his speech, Paul questioned not only the fundamental health of America's social compact, but specifics like fiat money, the power of the Federal Reserve, the PATRIOT Act, Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act modifications, undeclared war, the illegalization of medical marijuana, mandatory sentencing requirements for drug crimes, the illegalization of hemp, TSA searches, federal debt and borrowing, the White House's authority to assassinate those it declares terrorists, the legalization of detaining U.S. citizens for national-security purposes, the political power of AIPAC, and the regulation of light bulbs and toilets in people's homes.

.....

Paul left the podium, for the last time, offering an "answer" to all of these problems: that people should choose liberty and limit government, and seek change within themselves.

"The number one responsibility for each of us is to change ourselves with hope that others will follow," Paul said, urging an end to two motives that have hindered U.S. society: envy and intolerance.

"I have come to one firm conviction after these many years of trying to figure out the plain truth of things. The best chance for achieving peace and prosperity, for the maximum number of people worldwide, is to pursue the cause of liberty. If you find this to be a worthwhile message, spread it throughout the land."

I think he's served his country admirably even if I didn't always agree with him. I think he'd have been more popular if he tweaked some stances, but that was RP, he was dead set in his ways and remained true to them all the way through. There aren't many politicians who haven't sold out to special interests and sold their soul for votes. I think he could have done much better in the primaries and such but I think he remained principled instead. In that respect, he gets my respect, even if it wasn't the views I agreed with always.

Except he is wrong. The Constitution hasn't failed us. We have failed ourselves. The principles of the Constitution would still protect us from abuses if we lived them.

The Constitution was not designed to govern anyone but a virtuous and moral people. It's not designed to govern anyone else.

That's true. I think better worded is that WE failed the constitution. Honestly, I believe that's more or less what he's meant. I've never seen him believe anything other than strictly by the word of our constitution and he believes that its been corrupted and overlooked in so many ways, and he's right in that respect, if I read him correctly. I don't think he meant that the constitution didn't work but rather that we haven't been respecting it but rather ignoring it or trampling it in some instances. But absolutely, I do believe our country would be much better off if we lived the words.

I logged in to post this exact thread about Ron Paul. Good to see it already here because he is right . Only we have failed, failed by letting in illegals, by letting treason become fashionable with no punishment meted out, by letting patriotism become a thing of scorn, by letting one party -the dems- sell out to anti-American interests becoming nothing more than a band of traitors that need to be dealt with accordingly!!! Failed by not standing up sooner! Nothing will fix this nation now but revolution. A fact.. Either we have one and take our chances or we fall completely and likely will be destroyed. Mark my words. Thank your god damn messiah for this !! That maggot isn 't my president .. ANYBODY THAT CALLS HIM THEIRS IS BETRAYING THE CONSTITUTION AND THE REPUBLIC!! The usual balderdash from Ron Paul.

The Constitution did not fail.

We failed to obey it.

Suppose you want to get to the store, and I tell you to go down three blocks, turn right, and go two blocks and you'll be there.

So you go down three blocks, turn left, go two blocks and see no store, and get totally lost.

Did my instructions fail?

And people still wonder why Ron Paul can't get elected President.

Actually, he is right about a great failure! But he named the wrong party. Our citizens have failed and in thier blind worship of a damn traitor have help set about our demise. Nothing less than a revolution can save the Republic now. No future elections , look at the cheating that went on in this one and the last one and nothing done about it. Illegal voting illegal foreign campaign contributions etc. The procesS is so corrupted there is not fix other than a compete house cleaning IMHO. Obama's reelection proved its too late for easy fixes. When justice has no place at the table its too damn late for legal means to do any good. States are requesting the right to peacefuly secede from the Union.. I pray to God that some do it peaceful or not! Our government is our enemy . Fact.. -Tyr

He knew that if he blamed the people that they would retreat into defensive mode and try to deny it. He made people defend the Constitution and see who really failed. Brilliant way to communicate.

I respectfully disagree. Obama is just the tip of the iceberg. Our elected officials have been ignoring the Constitution for several decades now. The original document is a sound one; it's the twisted and perverted "interpretation" of that document that has led us to where we are today. In some respects, the US voting population is responsible as well for allowing the politicians and their appointed minions to trample what are clearly defined rights and powers in said document. I am not certain that we, as a nation, have reached the point of no return but I suspect we are very close. Unless there is a fundamental change in the way citizens of this country think, we will NEVER meet the expectations of the Founding Fathers as expressed in the Constitution.

Who said it best, but good ol' King Solomon in the Book of Proverbs?

"Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people" (Proverbs 14:34)

And, let's not forget what Cassius said to Brutus in the first act of "Julius Caesar"

"The fault is not in our stars, dear Brutus, but in ourselves"

Political solutions are, at best, temporary and imperfect. We must all improve the one person that we have control of.. ourselves, if there is any hope for this country.

I was right there with you before the election results. I had high hopes that we could kick out the damn traitor and start fixing his destruction but alas , it was not to be. The people have decided to milk the golden goose and thats a direct path to our destruction as a Representative Republic. Sure its been going on for at least 4 decades but obama was the traitor they've been waiting for. A man that hates this nation and wants it destroyed. Very willing to do the bidding of his masters. I know he is just a puppet for the globalists but still he must be held accountable for his deeds IMHO. IF BY SOME MIRACLE THIS GETS REVERSED HE SHOULD BE TRIED FOR TREASON. For its obvious he is as guilty of it as is a 5 dollar whore guilty of prostitution and both about equals.. -Tyr

I really hate this "WE" shit. I am not part of "WE". The people screwed it up. I didn't. I am not, and refuse to be, a part of the "WE". The Constitution is being ignored because of the people in Washington. I had nothing to do with it and have no power to change any of it. Wishing, praying, hoping, living a moral life is never going to change anything. Either revolution or a cataclysmic event are the only ways to change things. And a revolution is a toss of the dice as to whether it will be better or not.

If, as I suspect, we go into a depression with a total financial collapse, there will be a splitting off of the states and a new country or countries will be formed.

There is a new royalty today. They are called politicians, ceo's and TV stars. They rule by their own divine right (because they know what's best). I didn't put them there because I'm not part of "WE".

Perhaps I got him wrong and I heard him just this morning on CSPAN, but I believe he said those running the show in DC failed us.

I don't see how that translates in some minds as him claiming the constitution failed us.

If he says that, what he has to mean is that the constitution did not restrain DC enough.

You make some good points. Also, there are a lot of similarities between the decline of the US and the fall of the Roman empire. The politicians are more concerned with gaining and retaining power, they provide "bread and circuses" to the masses, the antics of entertainers (gladiators) are more important than what those in power are up to, etc. Much of the population has become lazy, arrogant and dependent. Very disturbing and sad.

I have often said that it is not the enemy outside the walls we need to fear but rather the enemy within.

Not to be argumentative, guys, but I don't think he was wrong, but rather some are reading his words wrong. When he says the COTUS failed, he means it in a different manner. The COTUS failed to stop "people" from trampling on it and turning our once great country into chaos and a downfall. The way I read it, and even though he said it failed, I think he meant it rhetorically, and that he IS saying that the people and government are the ones who actually failed the constitution.

I personally REFUSE to abandon our nation. That is OUR NATION. Doing so is almost exactly what Obama, and the opposition to the Constitution want.
If we do that. We are handing over EVERYTHING we all knew to be the America we love. Handing it to them with a BOW and without a fight ISN'T why I gave THIRTY YEARS of my SIXTY-FIVE years to defend, and make better for my Grandchildren.

I refuse to GIVE UP. In fact. I will probably die before I give up any of what Our Founders wanted this nation to become.

Rights are inherently tied to responsibilities. If you are willing to fight for your rights, the best way to do so is to exercise the responsibilities given to you by God and society. Most importantly, those adopted in marriage and family.

If we live the responsibilities to our rights, we will have our rights as well.

Forgive me, but I think that might be a bit shortsighted. Just because a State seceeds doesn't necessarily mean it will be less totalitarian or more free than our current government. Because it wont be bound by the Constitution either.

I believe if a state leaves it will be to follow the Constitution because our Federal government does not! I'll happilly go there and defend that. I am never giving up any of my rights . That includes my right to keep and bear arms.. That right is intended to insure a way to protect all the other rights! What we have now is a government hellbent on enslaving us.
