CAIRO - Egyptian President Mohammed Morsi's decree exempting all his decisions from legal challenge until a new parliament was elected caused fury amongst his opponents on Friday who accused him of being the new Hosni Mubarak and hijacking the revolution.
Thousands of chanting protesters packed Tahrir Square, the heart of the 2011 anti-Mubarak uprising, demanding Morsi quit and accusing him of launching a "coup". There were violent protests in Alexandria, Port Said and Suez.
Morsi's aides said the presidential decree was to speed up a protracted transition that has been hindered by legal obstacles but Morsi's rivals were quick to condemn him as a new autocratic pharaoh who wanted to impose his Islamist vision on Egypt.
Buoyed by accolades from around the world for mediating a truce between Hamas and Israel, Morsi on Thursday ordered that an Islamist-dominated assembly writing the new constitution could not be dissolved by legal challenges.
"Morsi a 'temporary' dictator," was the headline in the independent daily Al-Masry Al-Youm.
Morsi, an Islamist whose roots are in the Muslim Brotherhood, also gave himself sweeping powers that allowed him to sack the unpopular general prosecutor and opened the door for a retrial for Mubarak and his aides.

This is obama's new muslim buddy. I bet obama is jealous as hell. Because he has to proceed so slowly on his march to having complete dictatorial power--that damn Constitution!!! Just hold on folks, obama is working on it.
You jacknapes, gadflies, sold out bitches that voted for him can rejoice before this term ends. My only pleasure will be in seeing your tears when the treacherous bastard turns on you people , just as every dictator turns on his allies. -Tyr

CAIRO Thousands of opponents of Egypt's Islamist president clashed with his supporters in cities across the country Friday, burning several offices of the Muslim Brotherhood, in the most violent and widespread protests since Mohammed Morsi came to power, sparked by his move to grant himself sweeping powers. The violence, which left 100 people injured, reflected the increasingly dangerous polarization in Egypt over what course it will take nearly two years after the fall of autocrat Hosni Mubarak.
Critics of Morsi accused him of seizing dictatorial powers with his decrees a day earlier that make him immune to judicial oversight and give him authority to take any steps against "threats to the revolution". On Friday, the president spoke before a crowd of his supporters massed in front of his palace and said his edits were necessary to stop a "minority" that was trying to block the goals of the revolution.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is really about establishing Muslim Brotherhood control and Islam as the predominant force in Egypt and severely limiting the role of the Copts and any other minority factions in creating a viable constitution. In other words the Brotherhood wants a theocracy and will make damn sure that Islam subjegates ALL. THEY WANT THAT AS THE PRIMARY FOCUS OF ANY CONSTITUTION. Told you people the socalled Arab Spring was all about Islam's advancement in power across the ME.. OBAMA AND THE MEDIA LIED TO ALL AMERICANS ABOUT THAT.--Tyr

Actually Morsi did the right thing by removing former Mubarak regime figures, but he went wrong after that by appointing his own replacements. It has to be said also that Sobahi, Baradei and the Christians banded together to incite rioting against Morsi which is also the wrong way to go about it.

Nevermind who he appointed, the concern is the executive orders granting him more and more powers that should be of concern. He's granting himself immunity and making it so courts can't intervene against him since he took office. We have checks and balances here, as do many countries. With no legal oversight and immunity, he can basically do as he pleases. The Islamic world should know by now what that leads to.

One important point is not being mentioned in much of the media. He did nothing illegal according to Egyptian Law.

I repeat... Meet the New Boss...Same as the Old Boss

That's the same thing i said Bush to Obama.
Executive orders, Skirting the constitution, claiming presidential powers where there were none granted... smaller scale than in Egypt but ... I'd guess that next time a round that a republican gets in and does EXACTLY THE SAME things Obama's doing, but is doing it for "good" republican reasons. ---fighting the Muslims that are gonna kill us in our beds maybe-- that most of the right won't have a problem with it. "the constitutions not suicide pack etc.." And the president will have open dictatorial powers that cover both domestic and foreign policy. All brought to you by the support of the faithful of the LEFT & RIGHT.

We've all been hoodwinked. I'd like to hope that we'd all do some self examination and take all of the constitution very seriously. And ANY presidential or congressional power grabs as criminal, no matter what party it comes from.
But i fear that this post, will just irritated you guys... again. and many continue to see "the left" and Obama as the only real problem.

"If Bush/Romney did it it's OK because he loves America..."

Didn't say he did. It's their own fault if they don't have checks and balances in place to prevent a terror organization from grabbing all the power and preventing anyone from stopping them or challenging them.
