I love the beauty of snow but try working all day long when it is freezing?

I am not trying to minimize the beauty of a small amout of snow on the ground but let's not forget humans lives are cost due to snow. More fatal auto accidents for instance.

In construction work, we used to have to take special precautions due to snow and thaw out not only ourselves but the equipment so I am not tossing sour grapes, just saying for workers it can be hell.

Sigh. More gorgeous shots of an often-underrated season:

Nobody disputes that in my very warm surroundings, that photos of winter scenes are beautiful.

They are.

From a warm vantage point, I can even be impressed by super hot lava flows.

All I am saying is work next to those cold areas all day long. Work next to a lave flow.

I said Abbey that i love your photos. So why did you sigh?

Well Robert, I posted these pics to point out what I love about winter. I especially did it because so many people find only the negative in the season. I think we all know the difficulties associated with winter. I was trying to point out the good; the beauty of a snowy landscape. Hence the sigh. I'm sure you can understand that.

Say, going along with that idea, do you have any awesome photos of storms such as hurricanes and tornados?

I get the idea you wouldn't know a good time if it fell out of the sky, landed on your face and started to wiggle.

This thread is about beauty.

Frankly, Winter is my FAVOURITE season.

The untouched beauty of nature is a sight to behold any time but with a frosting of snow, a lake and some mountains and you have the makings of picturesque, not just beautiful!

May your winter to come be filled with fluffy white beauty instead of slippery, sludgy, brown stuff.

favorite winter memories.....

the blizzard of 63 in Iowa.....so much snow that when my sister got picked up by the schoolbus one morning I dropped a big chunk of snow down on top of the bus from the top of the snow bank on our yard.....I remember walking along the top of the snow bank and stepping over the telephone wires on their poles.......all winter long every time we left the driveway someone had to walk ahead and make sure no one was coming before dad turned onto the road......

another, oddly enough, from August....we were visiting Lake Louise in the Banf, Alberta........while we were at the hotel there was a huge avalanche across the lake and we saw the whole side of a mountain lose its snow......

well that is one of the perks, since you guys won't go outside if it's just cold.

And YES, Mr. smarty pants I do own a snowsuit. How else am I supposed to trudge up those sledding hills?????

Don't you have some studying to do????:slap:

Breathtakingly beautiful. The little dirt road we live on is gorgeous when the snow is thick and draping on tree branches. And across another road are nothing but woods. When I'm turning onto our trail, if you will, my yard looks like it's covered in a white carpet. The tree limbs sag from the weight of the snow and since we live on a corner lot, with very few homes in the area, that makes it look so much the better. While I turn in I stop and take a deep breath, smile and say thanks for such a beautiful piece of property. It truly is our little piece of Heaven. Fluffy, soft, and shiny in the moonlight or bright, glistening and strikingly gorgeous in light of day. My hubby and I are truly blessed. And we don't take it for granted.

As an after thought, our closest neighbor, one of about four in our little area, asked me a couple of days ago while I was out shovelin a bit of snow we'd gotten that morning, how I liked the snow, (he hates it as he takes off for Florida after Christmas). I told him I didn't much mind it as I'd been shoveling it for years and am used to shoveling and it gives me great exercise. Now today, it's really coming down in huge flakes looking like cotton landing and gathering on trees, and ground. If this keeps up, the trees will have a white satiny fluffy look to them and we'll be reminded of how lucky we are to still be alive to enjoy its beauty.

I just stopped right there; recognizing the setup for an uphill both ways story. my mom told me that when you find yourself in a room full of horse shit, look for the pony.:thumb:

She was telling you something. Ask yourself, why would your mom talk that way to you? Did it stop you? Bet she named you a one trick pony.

Abbey. Last time I actually saw it in person was in 1980 during an Annual Navy deployment that was called UNITAS. U.S. Navy ships circumnavigated South America. Visiting each nation, and performing joint Training exercises with each Navy.

Seeing that glacier from several thousand yards away was probably the most Unforgettable sight I had ever seen at the time. My bucket list now includes The Grand Canyon, and several South Pacific Islands our troops fought on during WWII.

By the way. We stopped in the Argentine port where the BELGRANO...the ship the British navy Sank during the Falkland war...a year later. Turns out. Our crew played soccer against the crew of the Belgrano...many of whom died that year.

The Grand Canyon will take your breath away. I think it is one of the greatest wonders of the world ... up there with Niagra Falls and Victoria Falls.

I would like to offer tips about the Grand Canyon.

Since it is a major trip to get there, one might look up hotels there using a service such as hotwire.com. I vouch for hotwire low prices and good hotels. However it does not mean you must rely only on hotwire. Do some checking. even with the hotel.

I love to take photographs. I take a lot when I am out, but darned few of them are first class art.

I last spent only maybe 3 hours at the Grand Canyon and I saw a lot.

Tips are, if you can book a hotel to stay at ask around to find out some of the best places to take photos, then take some very early in the AM and then some late in the day. At least you can get interesting color changes.

I took my photos mid day for the most part and had to leave due to a committment to get to MO and sadly missed the best times of day. I would have helped myself by being there for a few days at least.

I will do this next time I go there.

The best adventure at the Grand Canyon is to walk to the bottom and stay the night and walk up the other side. My ex did it with his son, uncle and a couple of cousins. Tons of pictures on the way down, their stay, and the way up.

PS ... these are the same group of people that climb Half Dome every year.

SassyLady. No doubt. However. It looks now like the closest I'll ever get to seeing it in person is limited to GOOGLE EARTH, or watching the NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC Channel.

I did see ALL OF IT from the air, while flying to San Diego from Philadelphia. And of course. Those Magnificent ROCKIES!

I am convinced. Far too many people how no idea how HUGE and BEAUTIFUL our nation really is. It's what dreams really are made of.

I really like Abbey thus far and expect it to last a long time.

Why?

I notice that so far, less than half a dozen posters post to whine. She seems not to ever whine.

I admit that a post with pictures of winter did get me to remark that I have poor memories of winter snows.

This pisses some posters off. So much so, they whined and whined about my comments.

While some may see my remarks about terrible times spent out in those cold winters, where snow was not something i looked at in lust, but saw as this element freezing me very bad, with not one bit of enjoyment over digging out an Army Jeep stuck in the snow to show for my time in winter.

I don't understand the whining. Really. Did it do any of you a bit of good?

If you love pretty pictures, all I have to tell you is when you live in that cold, it can and does kill humans. That was my point.

I did not once tell any of you not to enjoy those marvelous winter scenes.

Can you all please end the sniping and whining right now?

My youngest daughter, now 25, raced to the top of half dome when she was in high school. She and I started up the trail to Half dome but her old father was not in top shape. I later learned I had the major artery to my left side of my heart blocking up. I was lucky I got surgery in time. She and i carried radios with us to stay in contact since she went up much faster than I could. I got to the bridge over the waterfall and turned back. She cut off her hike to the top to stay with me. She was not with me on the trip to the Grand Canyon.

She wore me out. She got to the top first when she was in high school. She stays very fit even now. She spends a lot of time in the Ocean since she lives on Kauaii.

I did not do the Grand Canyon or the Half Dome. My ex has a daughter with Downs so I stayed in camp with her and we watched bluejays and squirrels! She and I just hiked around the campgrounds and the creek running through. Absolutely stunning mountains at both locations. However, the Grand Tetons are my all time favorite mountain range, especially in winter.

My stepson proposed to his wife when they reached the top. Had friends film it so she could see. It was awesome. The first time he wanted to do it he didn't have the courage to get all the way to the top, but she did. So, he wanted to commemorate his courage to not only climb Half Dome, but to propose!!!

It's posted on YT but I won't tell you which one it is....for their privacy.

The park closes to visitors during winter. Also, make sure you are in very fit climbing condition should you try that climb. I speak from experience. I made it part way up. And when they put rope railings to use, you can be sure the climb is very difficult. My daughter made it to the top of Half Dome once that I know of and she says at the point of the ropes, it's hard climbing.

This reminds me of the part of the Canyon on the AZ side where an indian tribe constructed a building with a glass floor off the deck you can walk on, right over the Canyon. I bet it will take your breath away since it seems you have nothing under you.

I expect your ex and sons are in top condition. The rim of the Grand Canyon as I recall it is about 6,000 feet elevation. So when one climbs down then up, bear in mind one ought to be in mountain climbing shape. If one is not in fit condition, i tend to doubt they can make that climb.
