The woman, who wishes to remain anonymous, inherited the gun from her father who had brought it home with him from Europe as a memento from World War II.
The two officers conducting the gun buy-back, who are resident gun experts for the Hartford Police Department, informed the owner she was in possession of a Nazi Assault Rifle, the first of its kind, that dates back to 1944.
The gun is called a Sturmgewehr 44, literally meaning "storm rifle," and is the first "modern assault rifle ever made, eventually replaced by the AK 47 in 1947 by Russia, who copied the German design of the Sturmgewehr 44," Officer Lewis Crabtree, one of the two officers who discovered the gun, told ABC News.
"It's like finding the Babe Ruth of baseball cards," said Officer John Cavanna. "The rarity, it was made for such a very short period."
Most people, however, who aren't avid gun fans would have no idea what role this gun played in history.

25,000 dollars for a WW2 keepsake her dad brought home! IF IT WERE MINE I WOULDNT SELL IT AND I'D WRITE IT IN MY WILL IT COULD ONLY BE PASSED DOWN WITHIN THE FAMILY BUT NEVER SOLD.. -Tyr

First, the officers who explained to her exactly what she had should be commended for their honesty.

Second, I would either keep it in the family, as Tyr stated, or loan it to a museum giving credit for the exhibit to the father.

It's a really nice looking weapon, isn't it.

AHH, you too appreciate the beauty of the weapon that gave birth to the Russian AK-47!!!!
No way would I ever sell it. It was a war trophy and could wel have been captured by her father killing it's original owner in a firefight . WW2 was a badass war, lots of hard fighting. Keep it or loan it to a museum , only two options I could see wer it mine.-Tyr

Very likely already did before its original owner got blasted and it became a war trophy her dad acquired. Even likely he took it after taking it owner's miserable life in a WW2 firefight!-Tyr

Possibly. I would point out that a lot of those things were floating around for a long time after WWII. Still, it is a nice piece of history and not a bad weapon either.

I'd gladly trade 7 of my best rifles for it! Of course I read the woman wants to sell it, Im not able to kick out 20/25 thousand dollars for a weapon. You are correct , its a good weapon and being the prototype for the Russian AK makes it special.-Tyr
