Public Buses Across Country Quietly Adding Microphones to Record Passenger Conversations

Transit authorities in cities across the country are quietly installing microphone-enabled surveillance systems on public buses that would give them the ability to record and store private conversations, according to documents obtained by a news outlet.

The systems are being installed in San Francisco, Baltimore, and other cities with funding from the Department of Homeland Security in some cases, according to the Daily (http://www.thedaily.com/article/2012/12/10/121012-news-bus-audio-surveillance/), which obtained copies of contracts, procurement requests, specs and other documents.

The use of the equipment raises serious questions about eavesdropping without a warrant, particularly since recordings of passengers could be obtained and used by law enforcement agencies.

It also raises questions about security, since the IP audio-video systems can be accessed remotely via a built-in web server (https://t5_sites_static.s3.amazonaws.com/schipul-safetyvision/media/files/product/fe76a0de/SVC-2200-Spec-Sheet.pdf) (.pdf), and can be combined with GPS data to track the movement of buses and passengers throughout the city.

Just one more to add to the list of things our government does to keep America safe! The fact that these types of surveillance and data gathering efforts on private citizens will be abused (if they are not already) is either overlooked or denied by most. After all, if you're innocent you have nothing to fear, right? Isn't that the basic foundation of our jusicial system? That was sarcasm folks.

I have no idea what it will take to awaken the citizens of this country. I fear that by the time they do wake up, it will be far too late.

This act should point out clearly that the big government we have has no respect for our rights or for the Constitution. At some point we either wake up to take real corrective action or we "die" in our sleep. -Tyr

The question is not, how far do we let the left go.

The question should be, why on Earth do we let them get started in the first place?

Because our society has deteriorated to the point that people on public buses do not feel safe anymore. There are people who get on buses and prey on the other passengers ... thugs, bullies, rude, inconsiderate people ... and no one has the energy to punish these people and/or their behaviors....so this culture is spinning out of control. Authorities "need" hard evidence before they feel the liberals courts will take appropriate action. Thus, we have cameras and mics on buses to monitor behavior that has gotten out of control because no one has to suffer the consequences of their unacceptable behavior until it escalates totally out of control. The recording are just backup if something goes wrong ... like a bus driver hitting a passenger because they spit and piss on them.

Excuse the rant ... but I hate the way people treat each other these days ... without dignity or respect.

When crime is gone none of this will be done. So think Christian and do unto others as you would have then do unto you. I know that is un republican.

I agree with you. I used to be a privacy advocate, but suddenly I realized ---- that's just siding with the criminal! Of COURSE criminals want there to be lots of privacy!

After that Awakening I realized the TV systems in Britain that watch all the streets, our security video cameras in stores, are all great; and I'm wildly in favor of DNA collection on all criminals and I'd like to see it expanded to a total catalog from birth: wow, THAT would stop the serial killers! Be able to identify them quickly before they rack up two dozen beautiful college girls tortured and killed for their sex satisfaction.

More surveillance is good for the public, bad for the violent criminals.
