This is causing some local consternation:

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/12/25/new-york-journal-news-gun-owners-westchester-rockland-counties_n_2362530.html

A New York newspaper is under criticism for publishing the names and addresses of local gun owners on Monday.

In a piece titled, "The gun owner next door: What you don't know about the weapons in your neighborhood," (http://www.lohud.com/article/20121224/NEWS04/312240045/The-gun-owner-next-door-What-you-don-t-know-about-weapons-your-neighborhood) the Journal News requested the names and adresses of local residents who are licensed to own handguns through Freedom of Information Law requests. The paper requested information from Westchester, Rockland and Putnam counties. The paper was only given the names and addresses of those who have a license to own a handgun. The paper was denied its requests for the amount and type of guns owned by those who have licenses. Putnam County was still working on the request and has not yet released information to the Journal News.

The article includes an interactive map (http://www.lohud.com/interactive/article/20121223/NEWS01/121221011/Map-Where-gun-permits-your-neighborhood-) of Westchester and Rockland counties that allows readers to view those who have a license to own handguns around them.

Anyone can find out the names and addresses of handgun owners in any county with a simple Freedom of Information Law request, and the state’s top public records expert told The Journal News last week that he thinks the law does not bar the release of other details. But officials in county clerk’s offices in Westchester, Rockland and Putnam maintain the public does not have a right to see such things as the specific permits an individual has been issued, the types of handguns a person possesses or the number of guns he or she owns — whether one or a dozen.

Combined with laws that allow the purchase of rifles and shotguns without a permit, John Thompson, a program manager for Project SNUG at the Yonkers Family YMCA, said that leaves the public knowing little about the types of deadly weapons that might be right next door.

There is a lot of angst in this discussion. Legitimate, legal, firearms owners view this as an attempt to intimidate them. They went through all the legal processes involved to legitimately purchase a firearm. Meanwhile, those who acquire firearms illegally face no such exposure.

So the the newspaper staff and the writer himself now face exposure as well:

White Plains newspaper The Journal- News, a Gannett publication, has published the full name and address of every licensed pistol permit holder in three New York counties. (http://www.lohud.com/interactive/article/20121223/NEWS01/121221011/Map-Where-gun-permits-your-neighborhood-?nclick_check=1) I don’t know whether the Journal’s publisher Janet Hasson is a permit holder herself, but here’s how to find her to ask:

In addition to the names and addresses they might want to say whether these folks have guns or not. Paybacks a motherf....

Now let us contrast the liberal elation regarding the public release of the names of law-abiding citizens with this story:

http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/20121220/red-hook/nypd-captain-tweets-warnings-about-felons-despite-their-release-from-prison

CARROLL GARDENS — An NYPD (http://www.nyc.gov/nypd) commander is using Twitter to distribute the names and mugshots of convicts recently returned to his neighborhood after serving prison sentences — and his actions could result in a lawsuit.

Capt. Jeffrey Schiff, commanding officer of the 76th Precinct (http://www.nyc.gov/html/nypd/html/precincts/precinct_076.shtml), which covers Red Hook (http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/brooklyn/sunset-park-red-hook), Carroll Gardens (http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/brooklyn/cobble-hill-carroll-gardens), Cobble Hill (http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/brooklyn/cobble-hill-carroll-gardens) and part of Gowanus (http://www.dnainfo.com/new-york/brooklyn/park-slope-windsor-terrace), said his goal is to protect his community and keep residents safe.
But his actions, though praised by some local residents, have caused privacy concerns among others and provoked the threat of a lawsuit from Legal Aid (http://www.legal-aid.org).

Of them, six were identified in connection with a recent arrest or conviction. The four others were felons reportedly seen within the confines of the 76th Precinct — Twitter messages about them were titled "release alert" or "recidivist alert."

"Major history of DRUGS & BREAK-INS. Released & recently seen in our community," a Dec. 10 post about one named individual read.

I know, nothing terribly new here. As usual, liberals are more concerned with the rights and privacy of criminals, rather than the rights and privacy of law-abiding Americans.

The author of the piece, Dwight Worley, owns a S&W .357.

He lives in Queens, and has a permit for it. I'd like a "Freedom of Information" look at his permit application. It's not a simple thing to even get a home permit for a firearm in NYC.

I bet a nickel his name is NOT on the original list. Heck, apparently he doesn't even live in the area the original list represents.

It simply amazes me that such a thing even occurs. Why haven't they listed all the ilegal aliens in the area, the drunk drivers, those under suspicion of assault, or better yet, all those with medical issues related to mental illness? The people have right to know who in their neighborhood are certified insane! The folks running that piece of crap of a paper saw an opportunity to exploit a tragedy for their own personal agenda. I sincerely hope they pay dearly for that; loss of subscribers, loss of job and loss of any meaningful respect from the community.
