I've seen 3 professional versions of the play and have enjoyed them all. The first I saw with my daughter, SIL and niece at the Auditorium Theater in 1992, my daughter was 9. After that performance I went the next day to the library and read Victor Hugo's novel. The play did it justice and was more vivid. However, the play didn't explain the failure of the revolution as well as Hugo.

Once again, it brought to mind my belief that the play or movie is never as good as the book. However, both the play and movie are more fully enjoyed if seen without reading, then appreciated even more after reading.

In any case, found this interesting and disturbing in part:

While my daughter then 9 had seen professional ballet, Nutcracker, and several performances of Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Les Miserables was her first, 'professional stage drama.' At age 10, she tried out for local childrens theater, "Annie." She had to perform a song, she chose, "Castle On A Cloud."

She still has a phenomenal voice, she won IMEH state competition and made nationals. After singing the first stanza, the producer said, "Thank you Kendall, that is good." Kendall stopped for a moment, then responded, "I'm not finished with the song, it must be sung through the end." She did. She also got the role. LOL!
