The principal, vice principal, and psychologist at Sandy Hook attempted to take down the shooter; he was armed, they were not. Two died, one was wounded. Now, if they had been trained and armed would the outcome have been different? Possibly. That's all that can be said. For some, that seems to be enough:

Scores of school workers want gun trainingBy John Futty (jfutty@dispatch.com) The Columbus Dispatch Saturday December 29, 2012 7:11 AM

More than 450 teachers and other school employees from across Ohio have applied for 24 spots in a free firearms-training program being offered by the Buckeye Firearms Association.

“We’re pleasantly surprised, but it’s not shocking,” Ken Hanson, legal chairman for the association, said yesterday of the response since the group began taking applications on its website 10 days ago. “The demand has been there for quite some time.”

The issue of arming school employees to protect students has been “on the radar” of school boards in Ohio for several years, he said, but the organization decided to launch its training program after the Dec. 14 shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman killed 20 children and six adults.

“That was the breaking point,” he said. “We decided it’s time to quit talking about it and move forward.”

More than 150 Utah teachers and school workers took time off from their winter breaks Thursday to attend a free class on how to carry concealed weapons and respond to mass violence such as the recent shooting in a Connecticut elementary school.

<!-- Counter 1--> It’s a course that’s been offered to Utah educators for more than a decade, but Thursday it attracted about 10 times as many people as usual, said Clark Aposhian, an instructor with Fairwarning Training and a chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council, which hosted the class with OPSGEAR. Aposhian said organizers had to turn away about 40 or 50 people for lack of space.

Since members of Congress...also the checkbook writers of the Federal Education Department, and Union Organizers have put their noses where they don't belong, and never should have been.

I believe THE TEACHERS should get to decide, LEGALLY, how they will protect OUR children, and themselves while behind the walls of our NATIONWIDE PUBLIC Day-care Centers..normally called PUBLIC SCHOOLS.

Parents give the teachers the responsibility to teach, and protect the children...OUR CHILDREN. So, why not let them decide what the safest and most comfortable security would be where they spend most of their time?????

We all know. Whenever Politicians get their noses, and hands in anything. A majority of the time. It becomes another FAILURE, and the costs OUTWEIGH everything else...when VOTES are the primary cause of their Participation.

I'm all for it, let teachers carry concealed like they do in a certain school district in Texas.

Perhaps if we advertise this, schools will fall off the charts?

Knife-Free Zones
Prof. Reynolds at Instapundit starts off the new year by dispensing some good common sense advice:

NEWS YOU CAN USE (http://pjmedia.com/instapundit/160666/): Every man should carry a pocketknife and a handkerchief.
Common sense that is, unless you work in some Federal facilities like the one I work in. It used to be that one could posses a knife with a blade 2.5 inches or shorter. But no longer. My facility, which follows its larger national agency security guidelines, prohibits "Knives" from being brought into the facility. No provisions or exceptions apparently.

So you thought you would bring in a kitchen knife to cut the birthday cake brought to work? Nope, prohibited.

You thought that since you are in the military you would wear that Gerber/Whetstone/Spyderco folding knife that you deployed with on your belt? Nope, prohibited.

Ironically, one could get "knives" in our cafeteria. It is really just flatware, but I bet they have some sharp things back in the kitchen....

My main point here, besides snark, is that everyone should remember that federal facilities are essentially weapons-free zones. I have heard some gun control advocates poo-poo the pro-gun argument that gun-free zones encourage mass-shootings by pointing out that Nidal Hasan perpetrated his acts on a military base. Even military bases, counter to what most people think, have very restrictive weapons rules. Despite the presence of lots of soldiers, while in garrison the only ones with guns are Military/Security Police, as local/state carry laws do not apply on base. So like other gun free-zones, when seconds count, the Military Police are but minutes away.

Meanwhile, you had better cut that birthday cake at home before you bring it in, or else run the risk of becoming a federal felon....
