View Full Version : The Commute

I took my camera along for the ride to my office the other day and decided to put the results in a little film. A little snapshot of life in Australia.

Do any of you also have an interesting commute? Is your area unique in some way? Put it in photos or video and post it here. Let's share a little about our lives. It would be interesting to see how the others on the forum live.

So here it is. I'll start the thread off :)

Wow, I am curious . Are you suggesting that such a person may be lurking here-at this forum?
Myself, I certainly have not seen anybody posting here that I view that way. -Tyr

WAY too nice! Now I'm jealous again. I wish I could live on the water like that. The only water I have is what floods into my basement on occasion. :(

Part of me feels like running around taking a bunch of pictures to share, or make into a small movie like that, but I live in your typical urban area and it would all look the same. It would only be interesting if I went into NYC and snapped some of my favorite areas. I'll see what I can scrape up though!!

What music was that in the background? Sounded like a mixed version of the theme to Sanford and Son!!

Ah hell, I share mostly anything. Unless you're giving off license plates and addresses, there's nothing to worry about. I watched Jafar's entire video and all I learned from it is that he is near the water in Australia somewhere!

It's sad you feel that way :( The idea of this thread is to share a little so we can get a feel of where others live. You don't need to show exactly where you live. Why not do some shots around the area so we can see what it's like?

If I can, I make sure I'm near water whenever I move. I was even surrounded by water when I lived in Cairo. Actually I was on an island (Zamalek) in the middle of the Nile :D

Why not take some pics of your urban setting? I'm sure there is something interesting there.

And yes, the soundtrack is Spank-A-Lee from Herbie Hancock's 1974 album "Thrust". His Headhunters band was Herbie Hancock at his funky ass best!

This is my commute to get a cup of coffee through my snobby town.

This is my truck. It's a 2004 Toyota 4 Runner

http://i46.tinypic.com/ac7pz9.jpg

Here is the view when I get in my truck. My stained garage door from the flooding...

http://i49.tinypic.com/sytrnr.jpg

Here is my gear changer. I've named him Francis. And my messy cords.

http://i50.tinypic.com/qso7wj.jpg

Here is the gas station that my friend owns. My home away from home, as I like their coffee better

http://i50.tinypic.com/4zvltt.jpg

This is Abdul, he is from Morocco.

http://i49.tinypic.com/a2u3c0.jpg

Another dumb picture of Abdul, who was no irritated with me. Look at the prices of the smokes! Glad I quit.

http://i49.tinypic.com/2motw81.jpg

This is Heaven

http://i48.tinypic.com/34fh5pg.jpg

This is Alex. He speaks no English at all. Been friends with him for about 10 years and I don't think we really said much more than hello! Good people and a good mechanic.

http://i46.tinypic.com/9ibrjp.jpg

City Hall, I hate them, and they me, so probably not wise to be driving by and taking pictures.

http://i50.tinypic.com/35b7c76.jpg

That's my favorite pizza place. Tiny, but they deliver, and the best pizza in the world!

http://i49.tinypic.com/vgnbsj.jpg

Our High School, through the trees, and my dirty windows

http://i47.tinypic.com/2q84hlw.jpg

Driving down my road. My house is down on the left, the white house

http://i46.tinypic.com/kdmyhj.jpg

This is my house. Wow, looks tiny in this picture! Needs a painting, I hated the white from day one. Bushes gone in front and a little pieces of wood damage from Sandy. Also, our siding is made with some irreplaceable material AND also has asbestos in it. So apparently, it's gonna be quite the job to paint and replace.

http://i45.tinypic.com/29fef0g.jpg

Now I am back home with my coffee, and I sit my fat ass down and watch TV! It also looks very small. But I just moved it there and there is no stand or anything yet, so it looks bare. It's only a 37". I'm pushing for a 52 inch flat, but I'm finally getting a recliner next week, so one battle at a time!!

Those prices are less than half the price in Australia. Additionally all Australian cigarette packs are a uniform green colour and are not allowed to be displayed like that. They are kept "under the counter" so to speak so you have to know what you want before you ask for them. I'm glad I don't smoke them either. I do have the occasional shisha though but the $35 price tag makes it less often than I would like :)

It's good to know that you appreciate a good coffee. My coffee machine occupies a prominent place in the kitchen!

I also had a 37" before but replaced it with an LG 50" HD Plasma. That's about the right size.

I know all about getting furniture for new places. I had to get a whole house full when my company relocated me to Sydney and I'm still getting things. Last week I got a Washing Machine, Dryer and a proper dining table. Next will be a decent BBQ!

That station design reminds me of parts of the Paris Metro. Square, large tunnels created by digging a huge trench and covering it over rather than the tunnelling design of other networks.

Ok here is a video of part of the ferry trip. It was taken the day before my photos from the OP when it was a little bit rough. Sometimes you get wet even on the upper deck.

Alright, you have me beat! I suppose a horse or a donkey gumming up the works is worse! And as for me anyway, no way in hell I go out in a car without air in those kind of temperatures.

Oh - no...I don't think that's "traffic" - it's more like 'other cars'. I've navigated the beltway around DC, across Paris, Berlin, Daegu Korea, and probably the worst, or among the worst in the nation...Seattle. :)

I have a Nikon D5100. Not Medium format but still better than a happy snaps camera.

I've not done any fishing in the harbour. I don't have a lot of time. It would be better to fish out of the harbour though because of the dioxin levels :(

Do you know there's a little arrow to the left of the thread titles that lets you jump to the first unread post? It's a bit easier no?

It would also save you valuable internets that you could pass on to your heirs.

I am so awful about fishing. I can have an expert explain it to me. He can put the bait on. He can watch my line for me. If he says I got a fish, I jerk and he is right. But when I try the same thing,. no fish. I once caught a bass but that one fish does not make me a fisherman.

Greg used to work for me. I went fishing with him. He caught fish when nobody else was. I of course caught none.

I went out with the owner of a 36 ft boat. While he caught over 35 cat fish, I got 3 and only because of what he did. He told me of two of them and pulled my line on the other.

Don't ask me why, I just have so little experience that I just don't like to go fishing.
