Are Christians ever supposed to physically fight back against evil??

Why did Jesus instruct to buy a sword?

Is it not so that Christians can defend themselves and their friends and families?

Is turn the other cheek a commandment that applies always??

Suppose a man is beating a small child to death and you ask, beg him to stop but he refuses to stop. Are you supposed to use your sword to stop that evil??

your know this isn't Bible but the Lord of the rings film had 2 speeches in them that really reinforced/reflected my own views.
paraphrases something like:
the 1st is Gandalf to Fordo when he say Bilbo Should have killed Golum when he had the Chance. A Gandalf says don't be so quick to to deal out death and judgement, that even the pity of sparing an evil soul may turn, in time, into something good.

the 2nd is Sam to Frodo when Frodo feels like giving up. Sam tells him, in a wonderful way, that even when things get really bad and it looks like there no way out, to keep fighting, because there is some good in the world, and it is worth fighting for.

Satan sought to destroy all of them after Jesus was risen and the years came for the true church's foundation and prosperity.

There is something in those verses that is meant for us to understand about fighting back.. perhaps it may be that we are allowed to fight back when it is for defensive purposes only. With active aggression being off limits . As in conquering by sword to advance Christ's church is a definite non-no.

Sell your cloak and buy a sword is pretty strong medicine! Jesus gave words for us to consider and I've never seen idle words recorded from his life and sayings.

And this brings us to Israel's plight. As God's chosen people/chosen nation are they permitted in God's eyes to fight back AGAINST THEIR ENEMIES AND STILL BE IN GOD'S GOOD GRACES??

None of them were martyred early in their ministry. They all got the message out before being martyred.

A POSSIBILITY. Here is another possibility that adds to the buying a sword command Jesus uttered.
Perhaps Jesus knew they had not gotten(understood) his lesson given when he drove the money lenders out of the Temple(His father's house).

I think the buying the two swords and the driving out of the money lenders in the Temple was Jesus teaching that evil must be actively opposed. That turn the other cheek has its place and so does taking an ACTIVE defense!
We must remember that Jesus driving the idolaters out of the Temple was more than his using mere words . It was he in righteous anger that actively fought back.

Ask yourself how important was it when Jesus told to sell your cloak to buy a weapon if you have no money?
A cloak was an important part of one's protection from the elements. So why was Jesus actually telling to sell it if you had no money if -Not to indicate how important it was to be armed?

These two examples combine to present a powerful message folks.

That message is that its not only right to but a command to defend one's life , property and family against thieves and attackers it is also a command to defend God's word, God's church and religious freedom as well IMHO..-Tyr

The contextual meaning of the swords
In contrast to the literal interpretation of using swords physically, the following interpretation works smoothly in context so that all the pieces of the puzzle fit together.
First, Jesus reminds the disciples of his mission for them before he arrived in Jerusalem (Luke 9:3; 10:1-17). Did they need a purse, a bag, or extra sandals? No, because people were friendlier, and their opposition to him was spread out over three years. Now, however, he is in Jerusalem, and he has undergone the compacted antagonism of religious leaders seeking to trap him with self-incriminating words. When the authorities are not present, they send their spies. The atmosphere is therefore tense, and the two swords—no more than that—represent the tension. Jesus’ mission has shifted to a clear danger, and the disciples must beware. However, he certainly did not intend for his disciples to use the swords, as we just saw in the literal interpretation, above, for he is about to tell Peter to put away his sword.

Second, "For I tell you, this scripture must be fulfilled in me: ‘And he was numbered among the lawless’" (Luke 22:37). By far the clearest purpose of the two swords is Jesus’ reference to Isaiah’s prophecy (53:12). He was destined to be arrested like a criminal, put on trial like a criminal, and even crucified like a criminal (but his arrest, trial, and execution were based on false evidence. He did nothing but good.) Yet, he was hung on the cross between two thieves, which is also a fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy (Luke 23:32; 39-43). What are criminals known for carrying with them? Weapons, and to be numbered among criminals, Jesus must also have weapons. That is why he said that only two swords would be enough—to fulfill this prophecy. Also, Matthew mentions fulfilling prophecy (26:54). If Peter had kept on physically using the sword to prevent Christ’s arrest, prophecy would not have been accomplished smoothly and without hindrance. Jesus says that he could call on twelve legions of angels to protect him, meaning he is destined by God to die; he was not permitted to stop even the mighty Roman Empire from fulfilling its role (Matt. 26:53). That is why Jesus told Peter to put his sword back in its place (Matt. 26:52). And in Luke he says to Peter after the disciple cut off an ear, "No more of this!" (22:51).

The third and final nonliteral interpretation says that Jesus frequently used physical objects (seeds, lamps, vineyards, coins, lost sheep and so on) to teach nonphysical, universal truths, and the same is possibly true of the two swords. This interpretation of clarification is supported by Matt. 10:34: "Do not suppose that I have come to bring peace to the earth, but a sword." If Luke does this in 12:51, then why would he not shift slightly the meaning of "sword" in 22:36-38?

As far as Jesus stopping the use of swords to save him from his known and purposeful fate that is easily understood. He was giving his life for all of us and did not want that sacrifice stopped..-Tyr

they are not NECESSARILY commands to everyone. each case has to be checked. IMO you dismiss a bit to much with a wave of the hand.


2 Timothy 3:15-17
and that from childhood you have known the sacred writings which are able to give you the wisdom that leads to salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus. All Scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for training in righteousness;so that the man of God may be adequate, equipped for every good work.

and timothy was Greek BTW, so that removes any Jewish only application and the passage is an encouragement for Timothy, a pastor, to teach the same to other "men of God" , also mostly gentiles.

Notice the separation of salvation and good works.
it's not keep the commands or go to Hell. But it's not -the law is of little concern- either.
Jesus has salvation covered but the Old testament scripture has a place of helping us , training us, correcting us to live out the new life Jesus has put in.
The old testament law is not something to fear and dismiss but that is profitable for many things. Not to be worshiped but it is the inspired words and profitable for EVERY good work.
DMP you assert you have the privilege of just following your heart and the Spirit of God alone, ...into all righteousness.
But it seems the rest of us seem to need a bit of instruction and correction from time to time.

It's how people can know God but not be aware of the bible.

It seems you have a hard time separating the idea of the law from salvation.

the bible is Gods word so why wouldn't a child of God be very drawn to it?
and Jesus himself quoted the old testament when tempted.

Our Salvation was never hinged upon the law. That doesn't mean we dont recieve other blessings for keeping the commandments though.

I think I disagree because I see it differently. Loving God means the law - however invalid on its face - will be kept because every 'behaviour regulation' cited by the law of moses is kept 'on accident'. Make sense?
