While I admire Margaret Thatcher, my wife is noticing on the boards/blogs from South America that Ms. Thatcher is not exactly popular. That's especially true in Argentina.

... yes.

You see, that's the 'trouble' with any politician leading through conviction, and conscience, rather than just being a suck-up type forever craving popularity. Conviction politicians WILL polarise opinion, they WILL earn enemies, and more than a few.

British Trade Unions hated her with a passion. And very understandably. After all ... Mrs Thatcher had curbed their powers, and thus stopped their wrecking activities.

As for Argentina, well ... Mrs Thatcher defended people who were of British stock, wishing to be left alone to lead their lives in peace and freedom. So naturally, Argentina, which has NO need to take the Falkland Islands, will hate her for making their invasion force look like a laughing stock, before decisively defeating it.

That the Falkland Islanders wanted to defend their homes, wanted freedom from repressive dictatorship, I'm sure doesn't cut any ice with Argentinians. So it's little wonder that they compound this by showing Mrs Thatcher's memory less than the reverence it deserves !

Shame on them.

When I first heard about Margaret Thatcher's death, my immediate reaction was .. is this a hoax ?

I've spent a couple of hours waiting to see, for sure, that this news wasn't discredited.

But, apparently, this truly wonderful lady has passed on.

I have all sorts of reasons for lamenting her death, and for maintaining my considerable appreciation of this truly GREAT Prime Minister. From the way she pulled Britain up by its bootstraps when it looked like Union militancy was going to turn us into a Third World power, to the renewed sense of self-worth, outright PRIDE she gave our nation ... to her brand of entrepreneurial Conservatism that energised our economy and gave it new and confident energy.

Who can forget the truly stellar partnership of Reagan and Thatcher, between them a force for international Conservatism of a type the whole world could look up to ?

And I even have personal reason to be grateful to her. She completed the process within me of final rejection of the evils of Socialism. She saved my job, and that of thousands of my colleagues, within weeks of taking Office. Through her privatisation schemes, I and many others like me benefitted by profiting to the tune of thousands of pounds.

She was, in her way, representative of a new, revolutionary, and DYNAMIC, Conservatism. She, like Churchill in his day, was EXACTLY what Britain needed in its hour of need.

I am far from confident that we will ever see her like again.

An awful day .. most certainly, the end of an era. Margaret, I will miss you enormously. God bless you.

That can't happen. God cannot look upon sin nor can anyone in heaven. That's why Jesus was sent instead of the Father coming to Earth. Therefore, those in heaven are unaware of the goings on in the world. People laugh at me for saying this: I believe God called Jerry Falwell home because he had seen all of a fallen society that he could bear. BRITAIN AWAKE<nonmt style="color: rgb(0, 0, 0); font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', Times, serif; font-size: medium;">The first duty of any Government is to safeguard its people against external aggression. To guarantee the survival of our way of life.
The question we must now ask ourselves is whether the present Government is fulfilling that duty. It is dismantling our defences at a moment when the strategic threat to Britain and her allies from an expansionist power is graver than at any moment since the end of the last war.
Military men are always warning us that the strategic balance is tilting against NATO and the west.
But the Socialists never listen.[fo 1] Beginning of section checked against BBC Radio News Report 2200 19 January 1976
They don't seem to realise that the submarines and missiles that the Russians are building could be destined to be used against us.
Perhaps some people in the Labour Party think we are on the same side as the Russians!
But just let's look at what the Russians are doing.
She's ruled by a dictatorship of patient, far-sighted determined men who are rapidly making their country the foremost naval and military power in the world. End of section checked against BBC Radio News Report 2200 19 January 1976.
They are not doing this solely for the sake of self-defence.[fo 2]
A huge, largely land-locked country like Russia does not need to build the most powerful navy in the world just to guard its own frontiers.
No. The Russians are bent on world dominance, and they are rapidly acquiring the means to become the most powerful imperial nation the world has seen.
The men in the Soviet politburo don't have to worry about the ebb and flow of public opinion. They put guns before butter, while we put just about everything before guns.
They know that they are a super power in only one sense—the military sense.[fo 3]
They are a failure in human and economic terms.
But let us make no mistake. The Russians calculate that their military strength will more than make up for their economic and social weakness. They are determined to use it in order to get what they want from us.
Last year on the eve of the Helsinki Conference, I warned that the Soviet Union is spending 20 per cent more each year than the United States on military research and development. 25 per cent more on weapons and equipment. 60 per cent more on strategic nuclear forces.
In the past ten years Russia has spent 50 per cent more than the United States on naval shipbuilding.
Some military experts believe that Russia has already achieved strategic superiority over America.[fo 4]
But it is the balance of conventional forces which poses the most immediate dangers for NATO.
I am going to visit our troops in Germany on Thursday. I am going at a moment when the Warsaw Pact forces—that is, the forces of Russia and her allies—in Central Europe outnumber NATOs by 150,000 men nearly 10,000 tanks and 2,600 aircraft. We cannot afford to let that gap get bigger.
Still more serious gaps have opened up elsewhere—especially in the troubled area of Southern Europe and the Mediterranean.
The rise of Russia as a world-wide naval power, threatens our oil rigs and our traditional life-lines, the sea routes.[fo 5]
Over the past ten years, the Russians have quadrupled their force of nuclear submarines. They are now building one nuclear submarine a month.
They are searching for new naval base facilities all over the world, while we are giving up our few remaining bases.
They have moved into the Indian Ocean. They pose a rising threat to our northern waters and, farther east to Japan's vital sea routes.
The Soviet navy is not designed for self-defence. We do not have to imagine an all-out nuclear war or even a conventional war in order to see how it could be used for political purposes.[fo 6]
I would be the first to welcome any evidence that the Russians are ready to enter into a genuine detente. But I am afraid that the evidence points the other way.
I warned before Helsinki of the dangers of falling for an illusory detente. Some people were sceptical at the time, but we now see that my warning was fully justified.
Has detente induced the Russians to cut back on their defence programme?
Has it dissuaded them from brazen intervention in Angola?
Has it led to any improvement in the conditions of Soviet citizens, or the subject populations of Eastern Europe?[fo 7]
We know the answers.

My tribute to Margaret Thatcher

The Lady was Honorable, Brilliant, Classy and a damn fine leader that was totally fearless!
When any person can equal Churchill in leadership abilities that is off the charts amazing. When a woman can thus accomplish that in what has always been primarily a man's role it is a true miracle in politics.
Thatcher did that and made it look easy. Hats off to that and goodbye to one truly fantastic Lady.

I wish that I could have met and spoke with her...she equaled my childhood hero Winston Churchill. In my research I was floored the night that I realized that during my research of her life and career.
So knocked back that I admitted defeat in my debate that I was ever so absolutely confident in winning.

Not only Britain but also the world owes her for her tireless efforts to fight evil and defend freedom!!! She remained classy and vigilant until the end.

May Deus beatus vos quod remuneror vestri virtus quod pietas!

Thatcher came at a horrible time in British history and turned it on its head. She saved them from themselves. Reagan didn't have the pivotal moment that Thatcher did, but he certainly moved the country away from the same type of abyss.

Now, the US IS where Britain was, when the Iron Lady took command. Will the US be as fortunate with our future? We're waiting and hoping. . .

Reagan:
Thank you. Thank you, Margaret. And thank all of you very much. I haven't heard such cheers since I told the Washington Press Corps I was leaving town. I don't know who cheered the loudest -- them or me.

Frankly, for a minute there I was a bit concerned that after all these years away from Washington you all wouldn't recognize me. Heck, pretty soon I'm going to have to get one of those credit cards with my picture on the front.

I can't tell you how thrilled Nancy and I are to be here with you tonight to celebrate, as Margaret [Thatcher] said, the "forty-fourth anniversary of my thirty-ninth birthday."

Haley [Barbour] told me he was going to gather a few friends for dinner tonight, but I had no idea! Before I get started here, I want to thank my dear friend, Margaret Thatcher, for being part of yet another important milestone -- another important milestone in my life and for those very kind words.

As most of you know, Margaret and I go back quite a ways. We met at a time before she became Prime Minister and I became President. From the moment we met, we discovered that we shared quite similar views of government and freedom. Margaret ended our first meeting by telling me, "We must stand together," and that's exactly what we've done in the years since--as friends -- as friends and as political allies.

Margaret Thatcher is one of the giants of our century. Her many achievements will be appreciated more and more as time goes on and history is written. For me, she has been a staunch ally, my political soul mate, a great visionary, and a dear, dear friend. Thank you, Margaret, for being with us tonight.

I would also like to convey my personal appreciation to Haley Barbour. Haley, you and the entire Republican National Committee are doing an excellent job keeping the heat on the Democrats at both ends of Pennsylvania Avenue. Haley, back when I hired you to work on my White House staff, I suspected you might amount to something someday.

I must say that returning to Washington today really brought back memories. As our plane headed toward the airport, I looked down on the White House, and it was just like the good old days -- the Rose Garden, the South Lawn, David Gergen. I looked over a couple of blocks, and there was the Internal Revenue Service -- bigger than I ever remembered it. Then I looked down at the enormous United States Post Office building. I could just see the excitement on the faces of the bureaucrats -- knowing they would soon be managing our national health care system. Up on Capital Hill, I saw that big, white dome, bulging with new tax revenues. I instinctively reached for my veto pen and thought to myself, "Go ahead, make my day."

You may have seen President Clinton draw his own veto pen on television just last week. The difference is that his pen doesn't have any ink in it. Unless, of course, you're talking about red ink. And we all know the Democrats have plenty of that.

All of you have made our day, just by being here. It's a pleasure to see so many familiar faces and those who work so hard for the Grand Old Party -- which reminds me: I need to set the record straight once and for all on a certain matter that keeps coming up. I have to admit, I'm very flattered by all the phone calls, the letters, the signs, and especially those bumper stickers. But, with all I've got going in my life right now, I'm afraid I'm not going to be able to run again for President in ' 96 -- 1996. However, I have not ruled out the possibility of running in the year 2000.

I hesitate to ask. But if I did run could I count on you again for your support?"

Yes Gabby, liberals (or the smart people as you call them) have a unique ability to show their compassion when a conservative leader dies. Libs show their dignity and go out of their way to let their families and friends know their thoughts are with them during this difficult time

With the passing of former British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher Monday morning, many who resented her conservative politics began launching obscene attacks on the deceased woman’s character, particularly focusing on what they’d like to see done to her body and grave.
Twitchy captured (http://twitchy.com/2013/04/08/crack-open-the-champagne-twisted-twitter-users-dance-on-margaret-thatchers-grave/) a number of the grotesque responses, and we’ve added some of our own (strong content warning for language):

What all the THATCHER haters can't handle is. Even though she has passed away. She's still more powerful, smarter, and more Human than everyone who hated her, and continues to hate her.
Just like Reagan. Everyone from the left who always claims and brags about being TOLERANT...expose themselves with their Intolerant hatred, based on nothing but IGNORANCE, STUPIDITY, and PLAIN, OLD DUMBNESS.

And if you allow your wife to read the Argentina media on line, you will see the majority handled news of her death with respect.
It is not liberals that are intolerant, it is conservatives who can't handle the fact that some disliked Thatcher intensely.

Well now, Gabby. I've news for you.

For starters, see Jim's post. He answers you perfectly, in my view.

But as for the 'news' .. I for one can certainly 'handle the fact that some disliked Thatcher intensely', as you say. I've known this was true, Gabby, for decades .. and I regard it as a simple fact of life.

Yes, it may be thoroughly lamentable (.. and IS ..). But it's a well known fact.

Here's the thing. I say: don't just look at the fact of 'dislike' .. look at just how it finds expression. See what disgusting depths the Thatcher haters - SO MANY OF THEM LEFT-WINGERS, WITH A WHOLLY PARTISAN AGENDA TO FOLLOW - will gladly sink to, in order to get their so-called 'point' across.

A great deal of what Leftieism is really all about, how debased, how lacking in moral stature, it all is .. is to be seen from its adherents.

So, Gabby - - I can indeed 'handle' the dislike that's expressed. Is much of it thoroughly disgusting ? Answer .. YES. And I say ... let the disgust others will feel from seeing it, be instructive. Let the Left show us its true character, and its unfitness to represent a sewer, much less decent human beings.

True. Although .. here in Britain, I don't think any station would dare to go quite that far.

Not for the moment, anyway.

Even so, I've been watching some BBC interviews over the past 24 or so hours. It's becoming obvious that, even though the presenters aren't themselves offering tasteless criticism, they ARE asking questions sufficiently 'leading' so as to hope to get replies offering criticism of her.

The most blatant example I've yet seen was this morning, on BBC1's 'Breakfast' show, where Kenneth Clarke was being interviewed. Ken Clarke, though a Conservative, and one who served in a senior capacity during Mrs Thatcher's Premiership, nonetheless became known as a 'wet', that's to say, one of her people not inclined to be a 'hardnosed' advocate of Right-wing policies when it mattered to be. In Conservative terms, he frequently veered to the comparative 'Left' ...

http://biography.yourdictionary.com/kenneth-harry-clarke

For the next several years, however, his career stalled, not because of any lack of talent but because he was not a staunch advocate of Thatcherism and party leader Margaret Thatcher did not care for him personally. As a Tory politician Clarke represented everything Thatcher was not. He was a left-wing or "wet" Tory and a social and religious liberal, proudly provincial in orientation, and pro-European. He criticized his party's obsession with social class while himself exemplifying, like John Major, a new breed of "classless" Tory politician.

You can imagine, from this sort of background, what the BBC were hoping to get from Mr Clarke.

But, not a bit of it. He gave perhaps the greatest and unwavering support of her memory as I've seen in this past 24 hours. Though the interviewers hid it well, their irritation with Clarke was also obvious, from the style of questioning.

As time goes on, so the barbs will become more pronounced. For the moment, though, Mrs Thatcher is completely dominating our news broadcasts, and the output is at least relatively dignified. No .. as things stand, we are wholly reliant on the more extreme Left to act and speak disgracefully about this truly wonderful Lady.

But then ... such is trash ....

Just for the sake of a bit of context .. consider that Mrs Thatcher was first elected into Office because the British public had had a bellyful of the destructive, degrading chaos that Left-wing Union troublemakers had heaped on our Society during the 'Winter of Discontent' (1978-79).

See what this link shows us about that ..

http://www.businessinsider.com/thatcher-and-the-winter-of-discontent-2013-4

Margaret Thatcher came to lead the U.K. in 1979 after a series of disputes between the government and Britain's then-powerful trade unions (http://www.businessinsider.com/thacher-versus-the-unions-2013-4).The new British Prime Minister set out to wage war on what she saw was the "enemy within" the U.K., and many people supported her in this fight.

To understand why Thatcher had this support, check out these photos of central London from 1979s "Winter of Discontent", which show trash piling up on the streets after U.K.'s dustmen (a.k.a. garbage collectors) went on strike.

It's worth bearing in mind that Leicester Square is pretty much the epicenter of London's glamorous West End — a tourism hot spot where movie premieres are held.

These photos show the incredible effect the unions (and union strikes) had on the average citizen's life, and — amazingly — they occurred under Thatcher's predecessor, Labour Prime Minister James Callaghan, a left-wing leader who relied on the union's support!

Just a few months after these photos were taken, Callaghan lost a confidence vote in the House of Commons and was obliged to call an election (http://news.bbc.co.uk/onthisday/hi/dates/stories/january/22/newsid_2506000/2506715.stm). Thatcher was voted in to power in the U.K., and the Conservative Party enjoyed 18 years of government.

I saw these scenes with my own eyes, folks .. most notably the last one. I still vividly recall seeing a rat dart between some of those refuse bags dumped, several feet high, in Leicester Square.

THIS is the degradation Mrs Thatcher pledged not only to combat, but to ensure could NEVER be seen again in Britain's streets.

And it is because the Left hated her success in achieving reform that, now, they express their hatred of her.

THAT IS WHAT THEIR HATRED STANDS FOR.

Good article, even Obama was respectful:

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama led an outpouring of U.S. affection for late British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher on Monday, saying "America has lost a true friend" who helped win the Cold War.

Thatcher, the "Iron Lady" of British politics, died on Monday after a stroke. She was an important ally to American leaders throughout the 1980s, developing close ties with Presidents Ronald Reagan and George H.W. Bush, and was embraced as a soul mate by U.S. conservatives.

"With the passing of Baroness Margaret Thatcher, the world has lost one of the great champions of freedom and liberty, and America has lost a true friend," Obama said in a statement.

Obama, who has two young daughters, said Thatcher, a grocer's daughter who became Britain's first woman prime minister, "stands as an example to our daughters that there is no glass ceiling that can't be shattered."

Thatcher, a Conservative, was closely aligned with Reagan in building up defences against the Soviet Union. The policies were seen as important to the breakup of the Soviet bloc under Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev, and the end of the Cold War.

Bush, who worked closely with Thatcher during the Soviet breakup and in rolling back the 1990 Iraqi invasion of Kuwait, praised her as one of the 20th century's strongest advocates of freedom and free markets.

"The personal grief we Bushes feel is compounded by the knowledge that America has lost one of the staunchest allies we have ever known; and yet we have confidence that her sterling record of accomplishment will inspire future generations," Bush said in a statement.

"NO TIME TO GO WOBBLY"

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell recalled that Thatcher met with Bush after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait and argued for a characteristically tough response. "This is no time to go wobbly, George," she told him.

"She certainly was as President Gorbachev said, an 'Iron Lady.' We had a lighter view of her. We said, 'Watch out for the handbag.' She was tough as nails," Powell said in an interview with CBS News.

Reagan's widow, Nancy, called her husband and Thatcher "political soul mates" who helped bring about the end of Communism. In a statement, she praised Thatcher for sticking to her beliefs "at a time when so many were afraid to 'rock the boat.'"

[B]THAT IS WHAT THEIR HATRED STANDS FOR.

Sir Drummond. We are seeing the hateful, typical stuff taking place over there as well.
IGNORANCE, and HATRED have no boundaries. And the stuff that brings them together is STUPIDITY, or lack of Mental capacity.

What i heard this is all over is oil. Not on the islands, but in the ocean bed south of the islands. The Falklands would be an excellent base for a country trying to get the oil. The field is in international waters so perhaps anybody can get it.

This is all true enough. Though I think I'm correct in saying that, at the time of the Falklands conflict, the presence of that oil hadn't yet been realised.

No, at that time, it was purely about a belligerent power acting much as Nazis would towards a community occupying a landmass whom they'd rather see displaced.

It has been a long time for me, but I had the idea that Argentina knew of the oil field at the time. At least you confirmed the oil field. It is supposed to be a gigantic find. In the USA, it is not mentioned at all that I know of.

I didn't make the initial post as a news announcement, but to open discussion on the subject. Same with the second post.
And if you allow your wife to read the Argentina media on line, you will see the majority handled news of her death with respect.
It is not liberals that are intolerant, it is conservatives who can't handle the fact that some disliked Thatcher intensely.

Yes liberals are very good at showing their "dislike" of people. They always to seem to wait when the person dies and thus ensure their families see the "dislike" they have for that person

Of course liberals are the "smart ones" and thus feel a time of mourning is an excellent time to score political points

I am sure it means alot to the family of Ms Thatcher so many "smart people" are glad to see her dead

This is what Wikipedia has to say about it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Falkland_Islands

A 1995 agreement between the UK and Argentina had set the terms for exploitation of offshore resources including oil reserves as geological surveys had shown there might be up to 60 billion barrels (9.5 billion cubic metres) of oil under the seabed surrounding the islands. However, in 2007 Argentina unilaterally withdrew from the agreement; Falklands Oil and Gas Limited then signed an agreement with BHP Billiton to investigate the potential exploitation of oil reserves. Due to the difficult climatic conditions of the southern seas exploitation will be difficult, though economically viable; the continuing sovereignty dispute with Argentina is also hampering progress.

In February 2010 exploratory drilling for oil was begun by Desire Petroleum, but the results from the first test well were disappointing. Two months later, on 6 May 2010, Rockhopper Exploration announced that "it may have struck oil". Subsequent tests showed it to be a commercially viable find; an appraisal project was launched and on 14 September 2011 Rockhopper Exploration announced that plans were under way for oil production to commence in 2016, through the use of floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) technology.

So there it is. Whether or not Argentina had the slightest inkling of even the possibility of oil in the region, its actual, verified presence wasn't established until far more recently.

The Argentinian invasion was all about aggression against a people who had a well established history on the Falklands. That aggression, which these days may have greed for oil introduced as part of its reason for being, started out as pure aggression, and continues to be JUST that.

May the Falkland Islanders, who in a very recent Referendum voted overwhelmingly to stay British, have their wish to be what THEY want to be, to live in peace and security as a free people protecting their homeland, fully guaranteed. As Mrs Thatcher fought to protect their freedom, may her legacy endure.

I'm in little doubt that all they feel about it is disgust. However, I also don't doubt that they're resigned to it.

red states rule. Ya know? There really is another, great result of all of the HATRED directed at Thatcher. Despite what many of us believe, or may have thought about her. And that great result is. She still haunts everyone who hates her so much. She's even still as effective in her passing, as she was in life.
We may see it as hate. But with that hatred comes the Unquestionable facts that...She bothers them so much. They have lost all sanity by demonstrating how Ignorant, Stupid, and Full of Self-hatred they really are.
Mrs. Thatcher is STILL WINNING.

It was the principles/philosophy they hated. Gender was both the excuse and the apology. She faced an economy as the US has now, and reversed it. Don't know that's possible in 2016, but right now not seeing a Thatcher in the offing.

Many make equality between Reagan and Maggie, but she faced a much larger hurdle. That takes nothing away from Reagan, just the bottom line truth of where the countries were.

We need a Thatcher.

The major difference between liberals and conservatives is easy to spot

and Gabby proves this point is correct

Conservatives believe liberals are simply wrong on the issues

Liberals believe conservatives are evil

That is why "compromise" is damn near impossible on the issues

red states rule. We all know, from many years of experience how Only the Evil are capable of calling others Evil. It's the one, and only method they use the most often, that disguises their own hatred, and Evil ways.
Liberals have no idea what issues are. They believe what others tell them, despite being lies. So, there is no reason to compromise with LIES.
