Earth Day predictions of 1970. The reason you shouldn’t believe Earth Day predictions of 2009.

Need proof? Here are some of the hilarious, spectacularly wrong predictions made on the occasion of Earth Day 1970.

These are from the 1970 earth day speech..Every damn one of them wrong! -Tyr
1. “We have about five more years at the outside to do something.”
• Kenneth Watt, ecologist
2. “Civilization will end within 15 or 30 years unless immediate action is taken against problems facing mankind.”
• George Wald, Harvard Biologist
3. “We are in an environmental crisis which threatens the survival of this nation, and of the world as a suitable place of human habitation.”
• Barry Commoner, Washington University biologist

4. “Man must stop pollution and conserve his resources, not merely to enhance existence but to save the race from intolerable deterioration and possible extinction.”
• New York Times editorial, the day after the first Earth Day
5.“Population will inevitably and completely outstrip whatever small increases in food supplies we make. The death rate will increase until at least 100-200 million people per year will be starving to death during the next ten years.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
6.“By…[1975] some experts feel that food shortages will have escalated the present level of world hunger and starvation into famines of unbelievable proportions. Other experts, more optimistic, think the ultimate food-population collision will not occur until the decade of the 1980s.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
7.“It is already too late to avoid mass starvation.”
• Denis Hayes, chief organizer for Earth Day
8.“Demographers agree almost unanimously on the following grim timetable: by 1975 widespread famines will begin in India; these will spread by 1990 to include all of India, Pakistan, China and the Near East, Africa. By the year 2000, or conceivably sooner, South and Central America will exist under famine conditions….By the year 2000, thirty years from now, the entire world, with the exception of Western Europe, North America, and Australia, will be in famine.”
• Peter Gunter, professor, North Texas State University
9.“Scientists have solid experimental and theoretical evidence to support…the following predictions: In a decade, urban dwellers will have to wear gas masks to survive air pollution…by 1985 air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half….”
• Life Magazine, January 1970
10.“At the present rate of nitrogen buildup, it’s only a matter of time before light will be filtered out of the atmosphere and none of our land will be usable.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
11.“Air pollution…is certainly going to take hundreds of thousands of lives in the next few years alone.”
• Paul Ehrlich, Stanford University biologist
12.“We are prospecting for the very last of our resources and using up the nonrenewable things many times faster than we are finding new ones.”
• Martin Litton, Sierra Club director
13. “By the year 2000, if present trends continue, we will be using up crude oil at such a rate…that there won’t be any more crude oil. You’ll drive up to the pump and say, `Fill ‘er up, buddy,’ and he’ll say, `I am very sorry, there isn’t any.’”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
14.“Dr. S. Dillon Ripley, secretary of the Smithsonian Institute, believes that in 25 years, somewhere between 75 and 80 percent of all the species of living animals will be extinct.”
• Sen. Gaylord Nelson
15.“The world has been chilling sharply for about twenty years. If present trends continue, the world will be about four degrees colder for the global mean temperature in 1990, but eleven degrees colder in the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us into an ice age.”
• Kenneth Watt, Ecologist
Keep these predictions in mind when you hear the same predictions made today. They have been making the same predictions for 43 years. And they’re going to continue making them until…well…forever.
Here we are, 43 years later and the economy sucks, but the ecology’s fine. In fact this planet is doing a lot better than the planet on which those green lunatics live.

Fun stuff. Notice the references (Pre-Gore) of Global Cooling????

What Earth Day reminded me of most, when the color GREEN became fashionable at first. Has now become GREEN-BACKS.

Much like the MULTI-MILLIONS Invested by Obama in GREEN energy, all of which have failed, or gone bankrupt.

When the cooling scam didn't work out for them they switched to the warming scam. They have had better luck with that scam.Although now the backlash has been growing steadily. Still they have the UN and national governments sold on the scam. That way they get to make laws that control the population and claim they are designed to save the planet. Pure bullshat.. Tyr

http://www.nbcnews.com/id/42711922/ns/technology_and_science-science/t/earth-day-co-founder-killed-composted-girlfriend/

Ira Einhorn was on stage hosting the first Earth Day event at the Fairmount Park in Philadelphia on April 22, 1970. Seven years later, police raided his closet and found the "composted" body of his ex-girlfriend inside a trunk.

A self-proclaimed environmental activist (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/city-slicker-country-bumpkin-environmentally-friendly-carbon-footprint-1588/), Einhorn made a name for himself among ecological groups during the 1960s and '70s by taking on the role of a tie-dye-wearing ecological guru and Philadelphia’s head hippie. With his long beard and gap-toothed smile, Einhorn — who nicknamed himself "Unicorn" because his German-Jewish last name translates to "one horn" —advocated flower power, peace and free love to his fellow students at the University of Pennsylvania. He also claimed to have helped found Earth Day.

But the charismatic spokesman who helped bring awareness to environmental issues (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/surprising-recyclables-1598/)and preached against the Vietnam War — and any violence — had a secret dark side. When his girlfriend of five years, Helen "Holly" Maddux, moved to New York and broke up with him, Einhorn threatened that he would throw her left-behind personal belongings onto the street if she didn't come back to pick them up.

And so on Sept. 9, 1977, Maddux went back to the apartment that she and Einhorn had shared in Philadelphia to collect her things, and was never seen again. When Philadelphia police questioned Einhorn about her mysterious disappearance several weeks later, he claimed that she had gone out to the neighborhood co-op to buy some tofu and sprouts and never returned.

It wasn't until 18 months later that investigators searched Einhorn's apartment after one of his neighbors complained that a reddish-brown, foul-smelling liquid was leaking from the ceiling directly below Einhorn's bedroom closet. Inside the closet, police found Maddux's beaten and partially mummified body (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/mafia-victims-dissolve-sulfuric-acid-1402/)stuffed into a trunk that had also been packed with Styrofoam, air fresheners and newspapers.

After his arrest, Einhorn jumped bail and spent decades evading authorities by hiding out in Ireland, Sweden, the United Kingdom and France. After 23 years, he was finally extradited to the United States from France and put on trial. Taking the stand in his own defense, Einhorn claimed that his ex-girlfriend had been killed by CIA agents who framed him for the crime because he knew too much about the agency's paranormal military research. He was convicted of murdering (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/why-do-adults-kill-children--0747/)Maddux and is currently serving a life sentence.

The warming scam also failed which is why they finally wised up and started calling it Climate Change which ensures that no matter what anomaly occurs in climate they can say "See, we told you so!"

Anyway, I remember all of the scare tactics used back in the 70s although I was just a young boy. The stuff scared the crap out of me and I would always go to my mom for comfort. Her attitude was pretty much the same as our attitude today which is to say she would remind me that the world was supposed to end many times while she was growing up as well and nothing ever came of it. I took little comfort in that until Global Warming came into play and I was able to look back on my own life experience and see the pattern for myself. Being in my 40s now and having undergone 3 evolutions of global doomsday predictions, I now understand exactly what my mother did back then which is a good thing as my young son is just becoming conscious of current doomsday predictions. The cycle continues...

Claim: In 1974, the US Geological Survey announced “at 1974 technology and 1974 price” the US had only a 10-year supply of natural gas.

Data: The American Gas Association said that gas supplies were sufficient for the next 1,000-2,500 years. (Julian Simon, Population Matters. New Jersey: Transaction Publications, 1990): p. 90.

Claims: In 1968, Paul R. Ehrlich wrote The Population Bomb and declared that the battle to feed humanity had been lost and that there would be a major food shortage in the US. “In the 1970s … hundreds of millions are going to starve to death,” and by the 1980s most of the world’s important resources would be depleted. He forecast that 65 million Americans would die of starvation between 1980-1989 and that by 1999, the US population would decline to 22.6 million. The problems in the US would be relatively minor compared to those in the rest of the world. (Ehrlich, Paul R. The Population Bomb. New York, Ballantine Books, 1968.) New Scientist magazine underscored his speech in an editorial titled “In Praise of Prophets.”

Claim: “By the year 2000 the United Kingdom will be simply a small group of impoverished islands, inhabited by some 70 million hungry people … If I were a gambler, I would take even money that England will not exist in the year 2000.”Paul Ehrlich, Speech at British Institute For Biology (http://books.google.com/books?id=azwQStEZq-8C&pg=PA606&dq=%22even+money+that+England+will+not+exist+in+th e+year+2000%22&hl=en&ei=DCQYTa_XBI-q8AaF1ZWLDg&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=2&ved=0CCgQ6AEwAQ), September 1971.

Claim Jan. 1970: “By 1985, air pollution will have reduced the amount of sunlight reaching earth by one half.” Life Magazine (http://books.google.com/books?id=bFAEAAAAMBAJ&pg=PA3&dq=%22By+1985,+air+pollution+will+have+reduced+the +amount+of+sunlight+reaching+earth+by+one+half%22&hl=en&ei=AyUYTZGzBcH88AbR74jZDQ&sa=X&oi=book_result&ct=result&resnum=1&ved=0CCMQ6AEwAA), January 1970. Life Magazine also noted that some people disagree, “but scientists have solid experimental and historical evidence to support each of the predictions.”
Data: Air quality has actually improved since 1970. Studies find that sunlight reaching the Earth fell (http://www.manhattan-institute.org/energymyths/myth6.htm) by somewhere between 3 and 5 percent over the period in question.

Claim April 1970: “If present trends continue, the world will be … eleven degrees colder by the year 2000. This is about twice what it would take to put us in an ice age.”Kenneth E.F. Watt, in Earth Day, 1970.
Data: According to NASA (http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/news/20100121/418335main_land-ocean-full.jpg), global temperature has increased by about 1 degree Fahrenheit since 1970.

Claims 1974: “… when metereologists take an average of temperatures around the globe they find the atmosphere has been growing gradually cooler for the past three decades. The trend shows no indication of reversing. Climatological Cassandras are becoming increasingly apprehensive, for the weather aberrations they are studying may be the harbinger of another ice age. Telltale signs are everywhere–from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice int eh waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest. When Climatologist George J. Kukla of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Geological Observatory and his wife Helena analyzed satellite weather data fro the Northern Hemisphere, they found that the area of ice and snow cover had suddenly increased by 12% in 1971 and the increase has persisted ever since. Areas of Baffin Island in the Canadia Arctic, for example, were once totally free of any snow in summer; now they are covered year round.”
Later in the article, “Whatever the cause of the cooling trend, its effects could be extremely serious, if not catastrophic. Scientists figure that only a 1% decrease in the amount of sunlight hitting the earth’s surface could tip teh climatic balance, and cool the planet enough to send it sliding down the road to another ice age within only a few hundred years.”
Source: “Another Ice Age (http://www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,944914,00.html),” Time Magazine, June 24, 1974.

Claim 1989: “Using computer models, researchers concluded that global warming would raise average annual temperatures nationwide two degrees by 2010.” Associated Press, May 15, 1989.
Data: According to NASA (http://www.giss.nasa.gov/research/news/20100121/418335main_land-ocean-full.jpg), global temperature has increased by about 0.7 degrees Fahrenheit since 1989. And U.S. temperature has increased even less (http://data.giss.nasa.gov/gistemp/graphs/Fig.D.lrg.gif) over the same period.

Marcus. Too bad nobody ever heard of AL GORE back in the 70's...while he spent his Month as a reporter in Vietnam, helping John Kerry write his WAR HERO STORIES that got him medals and "57" Varieties of Ketchup for being a Hero.

What none of these hippies ever considered (or deliberately ignored because impending doom makes the gullible shell out the money) is that Earth has gone through many dramatic climate changes, from cooling to warming from the dawn of time and it's a natural cycle that will continue until the Sun consumes Earth.

It wasn't Suburbans and Hummers that pulled us out of the 'Little Ice Age' in the 1300s, and it wasn't bovine methane emissions, either.

It certainly wasn't the medieval version of Al Gore.

The warming scam also failed which is why they finally wised up and started calling it Climate Change which ensures that no matter what anomaly occurs in climate they can say "See, we told you so!"
You are exactly right, sir! Any time there is a storm, or hurricane, or blizzard, they can say "Climate Change!!!" and now no one can say otherwise. If you have a bad storm, you're covered. Drought? Yup. Too much rain for your taste? Done.

He was convicted of murdering (http://www.lifeslittlemysteries.com/why-do-adults-kill-children--0747/)Maddux and is currently serving a life sentence.

Einhorn is currently using his bong-hole for better purposes than misinformation, according to his cell-mate, Bubba. Win/Win.

Looking at the 1970's hippie hysteria about the impending Ice Age & growth of glaciers and polar ice mass: I am curious at the 'Alarming!!' studies regarding the growth of glaciers and ice mass they all of them were quoting as proof, and comparing that to the more recent 'Alarming!!!' reduction of polar ice mass and glaciers - I am confident that in this short 40 year span that they offset each other as we wobble through space around our Sun.

In conclusion, since I'm much closer to Polar Bears than the rest of you - I'm pretty happy the world continues to turn and the ice is still there and plentiful in the Polar Regions, since the Polar Bears have no qualms with hunting and eating humans.

When Al Gore proves me wrong and Polar Bears show up in Wasilla, Alaska, I promise to let you know so you can finally buy that .50 Desert Eagle (for protection from bears, not the muslims, of course!)

Careful NightTrain. Al Gore still thinks he's the greatest thing to happen to the Earth since he started measuring the strength, and smell of WHALE FARTS as a guide to the ALGORE Global Warming Inhalant Spray, and Body Lotion.
