NASHVILLE, TENN. — When it comes to country music, George Jones was The Voice.

Other great singers have come and gone, but this fact remained inviolate until Jones passed away Friday at 81 in a Nashville hospital after a year of ill health.

“Today someone else has become the greatest living singer of traditional country music, but there will never be another George Jones,” said Bobby Braddock, the Country Music Hall of Fame songwriter who provided Jones with 29 songs over the decades. “No one in country music has influenced so many other artists.”

He did it with that voice. Rich and deep, strong enough to crack like a whip, but supple enough to bring tears. It was so powerful, it made Jones the first thoroughly modern country superstar, complete with the substance abuse problems and rich-and-famous celebrity lifestyle that included mansions, multiple divorces and — to hear one fellow performer tell it — fistfuls of cocaine.

He was a beloved and at times a notorious figure in Nashville and his problems were just as legendary as his songs. But when you dropped the needle on one of his records, all that stuff went away. And you were left with The Voice.

“He just knows how to pull every drop of emotion out of it of the songs if it’s an emotional song or if it’s a fun song he knows how to make that work,” Alan Jackson said in a 2011 interview. “It’s rare. He was a big fan of Hank Williams Sr. like me. He tried to sing like Hank in the early days. I’ve heard early cuts. And the difference is Hank was a singer and he was a great writer, but he didn’t have that natural voice like George. Not many people do. That just sets him apart from everybody.”

We lost a living legend today. The guy was a true artist and lived a wild life . Gave us so many great songs. Tear jerking , beer drinking , cry in your cereal songs too. -Tyr

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP)—
George Jones, the peerless, hard-living country singer who recorded dozens of hits about good times and regrets and peaked with the heartbreaking classic "He Stopped Loving Her Today," has died. He was 81.
Publicist Kirt Webster says Jones died Friday at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville after being hospitalized with fever and irregular blood pressure (http://www.wdbj7.com/topic/health/physical-conditions/high-blood-pressure-HEPHC0000023.topic).
Known for his clenched, precise baritone, Jones had No. 1 songs in five separate decades, 1950s to 1990s, and was idolized not just by fellow country singers, but by Frank Sinatra, Pete Townshend, Elvis Costello, James Taylor and countless others.
In a career that lasted more than 50 years, "Possum" recorded more than 150 albums and became the champion and symbol of traditional country music, a well-lined link to his hero, Hank Williams.

By most accounts, George Jones (born George Glenn Jones September 12, 1931 in Saratoga, Texas, died April 26, 2013, in Nashville, Tennessee), was the finest vocalist (http://www.last.fm/tag/vocalist) in the recorded history of country (http://www.last.fm/tag/country) music. Initially, he was a hardcore honky tonk (http://www.last.fm/tag/honky%20tonk)er in the tradition of Hank Williams (http://www.last.fm/music/Hank+Williams), but over the course of his career he developed an affecting, nuanced ballad style. In the course of his career, he never left the top of the country charts, even as he suffered innumerable personal and professional difficulties. Only Eddy Arnold (http://www.last.fm/music/Eddy+Arnold)had more Top Ten hits, and Jones always stayed closer to the roots of hardcore country.

Jones was born and raised in east Texas, near the city of Beaumont. At an early age, he displayed an affection for music. He enjoyed the gospel he heard in church and on the family’s Carter Family (http://www.last.fm/music/+noredirect/Carter+Family) records, but he truly became fascinated with country music when his family bought a radio when he was seven. When he was nine, his father bought him his first guitar. Soon, his father had Jones playing and singing on the streets on Beaumont, earning spare change. At 16, he ran away to Jasper, TX, where he sang at a local radio station. Jones married Dorothy, his first wife, in 1950 when he was 19 years old. The marriage collapsed within a year and he enlisted in the Marines at the end of 1951. Though the U.S. was at war with Korea, Jones never served overseas — he was stationed at a military camp in California, where he kept singing in bars. After he was discharged, Jones immediately began performing again.

Frank Sinatra called George Jones the second best male singer alive. I spent a couple of hours today listening to Outlaw Country on satellite radio playing non-stop Jones. He was truly great.

Legendary 'Man in Black' succumbs to diabetes complications in Nashville.

By Gil Kaufman

Country music legend Johnny Cash, "The Man in Black," died Friday morning at age 71 of respiratory failure, just three days after being discharged from Baptist Hospital in Nashville, Tennessee, following a bout of pancreatitis.

"Johnny died due to complications from diabetes, which resulted in respiratory failure," manager Lou Robin said in a statement.
A hard-living rebel who nevertheless won widespread acclaim for his music, Cash was a solitary figure in pop culture: a devoutly religious man who wrote tales of vengeful murder and mayhem, and a lifelong radical with a rock and roll heart who never had time for the polite country music establishment.
The author of more than 400 songs, yielding 100 top-40 country hits as well as dozens of crossover pop hits, Cash was the multifaceted voice of the American experience. He spoke for the condemned man and his redeemer, the downtrodden coal miner, the hopeless romantic, the junkie and the righteous man.
With songs that often relied solely on his imposing baritone voice and spare, percussive acoustic guitar, Cash blurred the line between country and rock, running afoul of the Nashville orthodoxy with his dangerous, rebellious spirit and teaching generations of rockers about the importance of emotional honesty in storytelling. From his second single, 1956's "Folsom Prison Blues," Cash displayed a dark edge that was hard to match in country or rock, growling in his famous, deep-thunder deadpan, "I shot a man in Reno/ Just to watch him die."
It was that signature mix of outlaw spirit and religious conviction that helped make Cash a towering influence spanning generations and genres, from country to punk, rock to folk and gospel, the '50s to the '00s. Cash was a ragged example of the power of music to cross boundaries, winning young recruits over the past decade via his Rick Rubin-produced series of albums, which introduced Cash's booming voice to a new generation of fans. Manager Robin said Thursday that 11-time Grammy winner Cash had been planning to fly to Los Angeles next week to complete work on his follow-up to 2002's American IV: The Man Comes Around.

He was famous for not showing- earned him the nickname "no show jones", I thought it was funny, nothing more; i certainly wasn't whining about it-- Perhaps you missed the part where I mentioned seeing Garth Brooks in concert.

Brooks I can take or leave but missing out on George Jones part would have pissed me off in a big way when it happened. Now that he is gone I'd just have it as a laughable memory of the man. He was all too human and had his vices/demons.
