(CNN) -- Syria accused Israel of firing rockets into the Damascus suburb of Jamraya on Sunday, striking a "scientific research center," Syrian state TV reported.

It is the second Syrian claim this year of a strike against what observers have described as a government defense research facility, and it comes one day after U.S. officials first told CNN that the United States believes Israel carried out an airstrike against Syria.

Israel Defense Forces declined to comment on the Syrian TV report. "We do not comment on these reports at all," an IDF spokesperson said.

The Syrian news report claimed the rocket attack on the research center aided rebels, who have been battling government forces in the region.

In late January, reports surfaced that Israeli warplanes targeted the research facility. The Syrian government has said the airstrike killed two workers and injured five others.

A U.S. official told CNN at the time the Syrian claims were false. The official said Israeli fighter jets targeted a Syrian government convoy carrying surface-to-air missiles bound for the militant group Hezbollah in Lebanon. Syria denied there were such shipments.

The report of rocket attacks come as sectarian violence erupted in northwestern Syria, where three consecutive days of killing by mostly Alawite forces have left hundreds of predominantly Sunni residents dead, opposition groups said Saturday.

I knew Israel would get involved after Hezbollah went to bat for Assad. If Assad fails, Hezbollah fails which is what Israel wants.

While awaiting a response for Jafur, there is this from the NYT:

<nyt_headline version="1.0" type=" ">Israel Targeted Iranian Missiles in Syria Attack</nyt_headline> <nyt_byline> By ANNE BARNARD (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/b/anne_barnard/index.html), MICHAEL R. GORDON (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/g/michael_r_gordon/index.html) and JODI RUDOREN (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/reference/timestopics/people/r/jodi_rudoren/index.html) </nyt_byline> <nyt_correction_top> </nyt_correction_top> BEIRUT, Lebanon — A series of powerful explosions rocked the outskirts of Damascus early Sunday morning, which Syrian state television said was the result of Israeli missile attacks on a Syrian military installation.

If true, it would be the second Israeli airstrike in Syria (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/syria/index.html?inline=nyt-geo) in two days and the third this year.
The airstrike that Israeli warplanes carried out in Syria overnight on Thursday was directed at a shipment of advanced surface-to-surface missiles from Iran that Israel (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/international/countriesandterritories/israel/index.html?inline=nyt-geo) believed was intended for Hezbollah, American officials said Saturday. That strike was aimed at disrupting the arms pipeline that runs from Syria to Hezbollah, the militant Lebanese organization, and it highlighted the mounting stakes for Hezbollah and Israel as Syria becomes more chaotic.

Iran and Hezbollah have both backed President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war, now in its third year. But as fighting in Syria escalates, they also have a powerful interest in expediting the delivery of advanced weapons to Hezbollah in case Mr. Assad loses his grip on power and Syria ceases to be an effective channel for funneling weapons from Iran.

The missiles that were the target of the Israeli raid had been shipped from Iran and were being stored in a warehouse at Damascus International Airport when they were struck, according to an American official.

Iran has sought to use the threat of a Hezbollah missile attack against Israeli territory as a means of building up its ally and deterring Israel from conducting airstrikes on Iranian nuclear installations that Israeli and American officials believe are part of an Iranian nuclear weapons (http://topics.nytimes.com/top/news/science/topics/atomic_weapons/index.html?inline=nyt-classifier) program.

In Lebanon, some analysts said they believed that a strong Hezbollah could also emerge as a powerful ally for Mr. Assad if he is forced to abandon Damascus, the Syrian capital, and take refuge in a rump Iranian-backed state on the Syrian coast, a region that abuts the Hezbollah-controlled northern Bekaa Valley.

jafar. Even though you have me on Ignore (of course). You should do everything in your power to leave Australia, and get to Palestine, or Gaza ASAP, and position yourself...with the help of Hezbollah, and Hamas...as an INHUMAN SHIELD to protect your Brotherhood buddies from the next Israeli Raids.
Stand up, and shrug off that known Cowardice you have shown here.
You too can become a MARTYR.

Think of the benefits. Spreading yourself around for all to admire.

I hate terrorists
I don't hate Jews
Plus, do you think a Sunni Muslim like me would give support to Iran and Hezbollah? Especially now they are supporting Assad?

G.W. Bush Supported asad and used him to torture our prisoners.

we can't just act like Asad has always been the full on enemy of the U.S. here.
it's really Orwellian

In the book 1984 the Gov't would have the news media change who the enemy was. Today the enemy would be one group and then the next day they would our ally. On both days the people were expected to shout for their deaths or cheer their victories with sincere fervor.
some people did just that. everyone played along but others had a harder time swallowing the the obvious contradictions.

Hezbolah is a terrorist group, working with Asad
Wahabi Jihadist Alqeada terrorist type groups are fighting against Asad
Asad was working with us and Israel against Alqeada
Israel help create Hezbolah
the U.S. helped create Alqeada and worked with it's leaders against the Russians
And we are again sending support to Alqeada this time in Syria.
And we support the terrorist group Jundulla in Iran Against Iran. taking them off the terror list.
But Reagan and Ollie North sold arms to Iran while they held Americans hostage.
etc etc..

sorry if i'm not on board with the latest 10 minute hate on Asad. yes he's bad, been that way for a long time imo but find me a horse i can back. not the Jihaist Muslims terrorist that are beating at his door.

thats not in the best interest of the U.S. or Israel IMO.

And sorry, if Syria had sent a missile into Israel, everyone would be crying for the blood of whole syrian army. and the death strikes in retaliation at the least.
When Lebanon fires into Israel it's an act of war. goes both ways.

If I recall correctly, the hostages were released on the first day Reagan took office in '80, and the Ollie Contra scandal didn't develop until '86 or so.

You need to fit in the nice box they have for you for them to be able to understand.

The arms-for-hostages deal referred to the American hostages being held in Beirut/Lebanon during the '80s like Terry Anderson, etc.
