Last year they said they didn't do it. now that the lawsuits are flying or the election is over or something they feel obligated to get out in front of it news wise and admit wrong and hope those affected will go away i guess.

AP

WASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service apologized Friday for inappropriately flagging conservative political groups for additional reviews during the 2012 election to see if they were violating their tax-exempt status.

Lois Lerner, who heads the IRS unit that oversees tax-exempt groups, said organizations that included the words "tea party" or "patriot" in their applications for tax-exempt status were singled out for additional reviews. Her remarks came at an American Bar Association gathering.

Lerner said the practice, initiated by low-level workers in Cincinnati, was wrong.

Jenny Beth Martin, the national coordinator of Tea Party Patriots, said the apology wasn't good enough. She called on the IRS workers involved to resign and Congress to investigate.
"The IRS has demonstrated the most disturbing, illegal and outrageous abuse of government power," Martin said in a statement."This deliberate targeting and harassment of tea party groups reaches a new low in illegal government activity and overreach. It is suspicious that the activity of these 'low-level workers' was unknown to IRS leadership at the time it occurred."
Martin also urged President Obama to apologize "for his administration ignoring repeated complaints by these broad grassroots organizations of harassment by the IRS in 2012, and make concrete and transparent steps today to ensure this never happens again."
Conservative groups complained during the election that they were being harassed by the IRS. They said the agency asked them an inordinate number of questions to justify their tax-exempt status, and several joined with conservative lawyer Jay Sekulow to push back on the IRS.

Kentucky 9/12 Project is one of the conservative organizations that joined with Sekulow to complain of government overreach.
Its executive director, Eric Wilson, said his group applied for tax-exempt status in December 2010. He said the IRS responded with an 88-page questionnaire that sought all the organization's correspondence, the names of its members -- along with details of group's activity on Facebook and Twitter. It was eventually granted its nonprofit designation last month.

"I would love to say that I feel vindicated, but to think that the government has the capability to reach into the lives of people in our organization is not only scary but describes the times we live in today," Wilson said of the apology.
Certain tax-exempt charitable groups can conduct political activities but it cannot be their primary activity.

the way they were targeted it's now admitted is IF the group had the words or the name Patriot or Tea Party in the Tax-exempt application they were flagged for review.

She blames "low-level workers in Cincinnati". but lawyers that have been fighting the issue for the gorups say that it happened in at least 18 state. And that it could not have been initiated oe mandated nation wide by "low-level workers" out of one office.

PLUS the nature of the IRS actions were more than just reviews of the tax exempt status. The IRS asked for the groups list of donors and other info on their supporters.

But hey sorry to bring it up the Gov't can do no wrong... I'm wrong for questioning federal authority... the conservative groups should have just given the IRS everything. if they had done nothing wrong whats the problem. why should they question law enforcement ALL THE TIME. Even when it looks like they've crossed the line. They should STHU and be thankful they live in America:smileyflag: !!!

WTF? How does a government agency do shit like this and get away with it? And they admit to it no less. Whoever lead the IRS during the time span should be brought in to answer to this, and of course fired. It's sad to find out more and more each week the various shenanigans that were hidden during the election season. I'm not a conspiracy nut and going to say that it was stolen, or 100% would have went the other way. But hell, I'd like for it to be fair and honest at least.

jimnyc: In answer to your WTF, and how a government agency does it, and gets away with it.

Simple answer. "Obama." And, extend that to "Holder".

They both ignore the laws, the constitution, and their Oath.

They assist the IRS in getting away with it.
Pure, and Simple.

Richard Nixon was impeached for making the IRS go after his political opponents.

(cue the liberals whiners who will point out Nixon wasn't impeached... since he got out of town just ahead of the posse)

But today, when Obama does the same thing, all the IRS has to do is say "Oops, I'm sorry", and that makes it all better.

It's not a poor judgment or just inappropriate, it's illegal and resignations aren't enough. Jail time is what is needed.

AUTHOR:
Daniel Webster (1782–1852)

QUOTATION:
The power to tax is the power to destroy.

ATTRIBUTION:
This quotation comes from the words of DANIEL WEBSTER and those of JOHN MARSHALL in the Supreme Court case, McCulloch v. Maryland.

Webster, in arguing the case, said: “An unlimited power to tax involves, necessarily, a power to destroy,” 17 U.S. 327 (1819).

In his decision, Chief Justice Marshall said: “That the power of taxing it [the bank] by the States may be exercised so as to destroy it, is too obvious to be denied” (p. 427), and “That the power to tax involves the power to destroy … [is] not to be denied” (p. 431).

</tbody>

The above has special meaning regarding the IRS. Their powers of taking are nearly unlimited-way beyond what police can do. That they are now justly seen as partisan, speaks volumes.

How bad? This bad. Following are from actual questions asked of targeted groups. Not the 'questions' that Ham asks, rather what follows those, which get pretty snarky, justifiably so, towards the end:

The Internal Revenue Service admitted Friday (http://hotair.com/archives/2013/05/10/irs-oh-by-the-way-we-improperly-targeted-conservative-and-tea-party-groups-last-year/) to improperly targeting conservative groups for aggressive applications processes for tax exempt status in 2012, using the terms “Tea Party” and “patriot” as flags. Here are some of the things they wanted to know about those groups.
1. We’re gonna need all your direct and indirect communication. “‘Direct and indirect communications’ is profoundly chilling of First Amendment rights, ” said David French, senior counsel for American Center for Law & Justice, which has been representing 27 conservative organizations met with IRS inquisitions. “It’s so vague as to be impossible to comply with.”

2. What do we need to know about your members? Nothing much. Just ALL THE THINGS!
http://media.hotair.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IRS2-e1368227720157.png
3. Your present and past employees and their relationships, please.
http://media.hotair.com/wp/wp-content/uploads/2013/05/IRS3-e1368227778781.png
4. No, family members of past and present board members and employees are not exempt, nor are their activities with other groups. Why do you ask?

All of the examples above are taken from actual IRS correspondence received by ACLJ’s 27 clients. (http://c0391070.cdn2.cloudfiles.rackspacecloud.com/pdf/irs-questions-aclj-tea-party-clients.pdf) There were many versions of the in-depth questionnaire sent to different organizations, suggesting there was more than one agent or one office involved. Though IRS officials blamed “low-level” employees in the Cincinnati office, which is the central IRS office in charge of tax exemptions, French said the abuse was far more widespread. ACLJ’s clients dealt with inquiries from IRS offices from “coast to coast.” Of ACLJ’s 27 clients, 15 finally had their status approved after 6-7 months with legal help. There are 12 groups whose status remains in limbo.

Update: I meant to add that a 2011 letter from Rep. Darrell Issa and Rep. Jim Jordan laid out 16 areas of the Tea Party questionnaires that seemed to overreach. Here they are. (http://media.aclj.org/pdf/issa-jordan-letter-to-irs-regarding-intrusive-tea-party-questionnaires.pdf)

As I expected the left is upset the IRS did not do more to these organizations

From the comment section of the Washington Post this morning

Amazing how these same libs want to prtect the "rights" of terrorists; but have no problem with the government wanting to intimidate and silence those with a different opinion on the role and size of government

Lets look at the reality. Tax returns are protected bvy the privacy act. That means that the libbies have no access to the returns meaning they have no idea who pays and who doesnt
But as we know libbies like making statements that put others on the defensive...a common tactic of the left

I'd a feeling this might touch some nerves that Benghazi didn't. It's much easier for the press to explain and for the public to understand.

Apologies and 'resignations' aren't enough, they need to face jail time.

And the issue is larger than originally told on Friday afternoon, traditional 'dump day.' They were just getting ahead of the release:

Wider Problems Found at IRS
Probe Says Tax Agency Used Sweeping Criteria to Scrutinize Conservative Groups

WASHINGTON—The Internal Revenue Service's scrutiny of conservative groups went beyond those that had "tea party" or "patriot" in their names—as the agency admitted Friday—to also include ones that raised concerns over government spending, debt or taxes, and even ones that lobbied to "make America a better place to live," according to new details of a government probe.

The investigation also revealed that a high-ranking IRS official knew as early as mid-2011 that conservative groups were being inappropriately targeted—nearly a year before then-IRS Commissioner Douglas Shulman told a congressional committee the agency wasn't targeting conservative groups.

IRS targeted groups that criticized the government, IG report says

By Juliet Eilperin, Published: May 12, 2013 at 2:30

At various points over the past two years, Internal Revenue Service officials targeted nonprofit groups that criticized the government and sought to educate Americans about the U.S. Constitution, according to documents in an audit conducted by the agency’s inspector general.

The documents, obtained by The Washington Post from a congressional aide with knowledge of the findings, show that on June 29, 2011, IRS staffers held a briefing with senior agency official Lois G. Lerner in which they described giving special attention to instances where “statements in the case file criticize how the country is being run.” Lerner, who oversees tax-exempt groups for the agency, raised objections and the agency revised its criteria a week later.

Why the IRS Abruptly Apologized to the Tea Party

May 11, 2013

It came as a surprise when the Internal Revenue Service apologized, seemingly out of the blue, to a number of Tea Party groups for unfairly scrutinizing their tax exempt status on Friday. Now we know why the apology came when it did.

The Associated Press' Stephen Ohlemacher reports a federal watchdog report coming out this week will show senior IRS officials knew about the unfair scrutiny as far back as 2011. The report from the Treasury Department's inspector general shows Lois Lerner, the head of the IRS division that oversees tax-exempt groups, was informed that groups with "Tea Party," ''Patriot" or "9/12 Project" in their names were being targeted for extra questioning at a meeting on June 29, 2011. During Lerner's apology on Friday, he blamed the targeting on lower-level tax agents. The report seems to show Lerner was telling the truth on Friday. The report shows he told the agents to change the criteria for flagging groups "immediately."

The focus will now become whether or not IRS commissioner Doug Shulman knew about the questions when he testified that no Tea Party groups were being targeted for unfair scrutiny in front of Congress in 2012. The report doesn't shay whether or not Shulman was informed about the Tea Party questioning, but it does show the IRS's chief counsel was. It's standard procedure for the counsel and commissioner to discuss this sort of thing before a Congressional hearing. Shulman's term as head of the IRS ended at the end of last year and he was appointed by President Bush. But Obama has yet to announce a replacement.

Obama's supporters are trying to spin for him and are offering a huge amount of sympathy for all the self inflicted wounds

Maybe it’s because two-term presidents suffer from hubris, or merely that after an administration has been in office for years, it inevitably makes mistakes (and too often tries to cover them up). But recent news reports ought to make Democrats at least a little nervous about the next few months and even 2014.
First, the administration started digging a hole for itself on Benghazi, with a high-level Foreign Service officer raising questions about the Obama administration’s handling of the September incident and subsequent behavior.

And then, the IRS “apologized” for targeting tea party groups for extra scrutiny, indicating a pattern of behavior that, whether true or not, suggests politically-motivated behavior.

Now, the Washington Post is up with an article (http://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/will-obama-suffer-the-second-term-curse/2013/05/11/3d6b3cde-ba61-11e2-aa9e-a02b765ff0ea_story.html?hpid=z2) asking whether the president will suffer a “second-term curse.”

Democrats surely will respond that the Obama administration had nothing to do with the IRS’s behavior and that it is Republicans who are trying to politicize both controversies to score points against President Barack Obama and former Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton.

Regardless of whom you believe, the controversies take attention away from the GOP’s problems and could put the president, and his party, on the defensive for the next few weeks or months. (Recent coverage about the implementation of the administration’s health care plan also suggests a rocky road over the next year.)

The last five presidents elected to a second consecutive term – Dwight Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, Ronald Reagan, Bill Clinton and George W. Bush – all suffered through problems, ranging from economic and foreign policy to personal.

Obama may or may not join that group (not all of whom suffered a stinging defeat in his second-term election), but Democratic strategists have to hope that media’s focus returns to Republicans and their opposition to the president’s agenda.

Making a point here:

The IRS has to target those it knows are the biggest tax dodgers those are the republicans/rightwingers look at the court stats.
they are the rich ones with the best lying tax accountants and lawyers. and they dodge taxes the best.
so it's just logical and proper and wise and good and right for them to target the conservatives. Keep the tax dodging down
what's all the whining about?
-tax dodging is down.
-It's not illegal to ask a few questions. Just let the IRS do it's job.
-Why are they complaining, bleeding hearts.
-I'm sure they must have been doing something to deserve it.
-If they didn't hang around with some of the fat cat tax cheats then there wouldn't be a problem. the IRS wouldn't have to do it.
-We all know how these right wing conservative groups ARE.
-Conservative ALWAYS try to make money at what they do. Non-profit HA!
-We don't have enough information here I'm pretty sure that the IRS Didn't really do anything wrong and as far as i know the conservative groups have a record or are doing various tax crimes everyday. I just don't have enough info to make a judgement.
-Many of the groups are associated with people like Jack Abramoff why is that? it just makes sense for the IRS to target conservative groups. Too bad for the socalled innocent.

IRS Agents trying to prevent tax fraud? HOW DARE THEY? But you know what, I thought that was called Good IRS work.

All the govt cover ups and conspiracies that are coming out right now and you attacking the right? Did you happen to miss who's running the govt now? Here's a hint, it's not Bush.

Keep the tax dodging down
ye

ah....because Charles Rangle is just sooooooo conservative.

right?

Simply amazing . That is the limit of your comments of the illegal and nazilike actions taken by the obama administration in targeting its political opposition. And I know here comes you ever usual defense of obama by demanding that I prove it involved him.
As if such a political tactic so illegal and so Unconstitutional was carried out without his knowledge or his giving the greenlight.
Of course should you plead that you agree with that my question is why didn't you post that criticism instead of the dodgy little , "Whew"..-Tyr

Thanks, it was your zero comment on the thread topic that I was pointing out. Zero comment equals zero criticism of the IRS action= zero criticism of obama.
Stop pretending you didn't get that from reading my post. Or if you are not pretending about not getting it you are as dense as a piece of lead.

Now that it has been 'splained' to you Lucy, care to comment on the topic?-Tyr

Unlike you I don't feel the need anymore to parrot the views of others; if it's been said I typically don't need to say it. Now if you could get beyond misreading what I say, and now even what I don't say, we could move past much of this BS you insist on bringing up.

“The Tea Party people have known about this and were working on this,” Will continued. “But they said — it was just some odd underlings out in Cincinnati who did this and there was no political motive whatever involved. Now the question is, how stupid do they think we are? Just imagine, Donna Brazile, if the George W. Bush administration had an IRS underling, he’s out in Cincinnati, of coursehttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://dailycaller.com/2013/05/12/george-will-on-irs-tea-party-attacks-how-stupid-do-they-think-we-are/#), saying we’re going to target groups with the word ‘progressive’ in their title. We’d have all hell breaking loose.”

Will noted that one of the items in the 1973 impeachment articles of then-President Richard Nixon, which ultimately led to his resignation, described the Nixon administration’s use of the powerhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/icon1.png (http://dailycaller.com/2013/05/12/george-will-on-irs-tea-party-attacks-how-stupid-do-they-think-we-are/#) of income tax audits in a “discriminatory matter.”
“This is the 40th anniversary of the Watergate summer here in Washington,” Will said. “’He has, through his subordinated and agents, endeavored…to cause, in violation of the constitutional rights of citizens, income tax audits or other income tax investigation to be initiated or conducted in a discriminatory manner,’ — Section 1, Article 2, the impeachment articles of Richard Nixon.

IRS Targeting of Conservatives Began in 2010; Not Skeptical on White House Involvement

Good Morning America's Jon Karl on Monday exposed new details about the growing scandal involving the Internal Revenue Service targeting conservatives. The correspondent revealed, "I've obtained a soon-to-be released investigative report that shows the IRS started targeting Tea Party groups more than three years ago." He added that this was "despite [the IRS] publicly claiming otherwise."

According to the journalist, phrases such as "limiting government," "educating on the Bill of Rights" and "criticizing how the country is being run" were enough to have the IRS start tracking them. However, Karl steered clear of culpability when it came to the Obama administration. He explained, "The White House said it had no idea that the IRS was targeting Tea Party groups."

George Stephanopoulos, a former Democratic operative, focused his question on how scandals such as the IRS and Benghazi will hamper Obama's political agenda: "...The IRS, these questions about Benghazi, trying to get the health care program back up and running. Do they have a plan to get back on offense now at the start of the second term?"

Shouldn't Stephanopoulos's real concern be on what are the facts are?

http://newsbusters.org/sites/default/files/2012/2013-05-13-ABC-GMA-TeaParty.JPG

In the ABCNews.com version (http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/politics/2013/05/irs-began-targeting-conservatives-in-2010/), Karl revealed:

By June 2011, the unit had flagged over 100 Tea Party-related applications and the criteria used to scrutinize organizations had grown considerably, flagging not just "Tea Party" or "Patriot" in group names, but also groups that were working on issues like "government debt," "taxes" and even organizations making statements that "criticize how the country is being run."
Today's scoop is Karl's second inside a week. On Friday (http://newsbusters.org/blogs/scott-whitlock/2013/05/10/abc-investigates-not-true-white-house-statements-libya-exposes-editi), he revealed that CIA talking points in relation to the terrorist attack in Libya had been severely edited by the Obama administration.

All this talk about the IRS auditing everyone but the pope skirts a bigger issue. Income taxes are not a good thing.

If it weren't for an income tax (and the fact that you get a tax break if you're married and have kids), we would likely not be talking about gay marriage and the need to make it a federally mandated "right".

If it weren't for an income tax, we probably would not have an IRS with powers that exceed their constitutionally allowed authority.

If it weren't for an income tax, there would be no Occupy Wall Street movement that insists that the "rich" pay their "fair share" (funny, how the Nazis went after the Jews claiming they were rich and in control of everything, then once they got them out of the picture they went after everyone else.. but I digress)

If it weren't for an income tax, we probably would not have these present day abuses by presidents (didn't Clinton also do the same thing? hmmm)

In short, an income tax is a means of income redistribution. Funding the government is only a secondary objective to those who advocate it. It is part of the Left's long term vision of a socialist world.

Me? I think a national sales tax instead of an income tax would be a good thing. Perhaps a flat tax.

If neither, then a reform of the IRS is sorely needed and should be a priority on a future president's legislative agenda.

Not a problem. Save it to your puter, and read it whenever you get the time.

Not everybody agree's with it. But it IS better than the system...of FIASCO of thousands of pages...nobody reads, we have now.

The bottom line is the IRS is not in business to collect tax revenue

They are in business to expand redistribution of wealth

And unless things change the IRS will be charge of punishing those who fail to obey Obamacare. Everyone will have more to fear from the oppressive Obama regime

More fuzzy pothead logic.

It is the legitimate function of law enforcement to investigate criminal activity.

It is not the legitimate function of the IRS to carry out the partisan political agenda of the POTUS.

Most of us are very familiar with the tactics of everyone related to the Obama administration, and the Democrat party when they APOLOGIZE and say "We're very sorry."

We know those words are nothing but SMOKE being blown, and used to conceal their CROSSED FINGERS, behind their back.

It's an old Ruse used for centuries, much like the Roman Guards who stood near a Crucifixion long ago, when they told the crying people. Don't blame us. It wasn't our idea to NAIL HIM UP THERE.
