It turns out that the IRS didn't just "target" conservative groups for harassment by extra audits, delays, and investigations.

The IRS also sent confidential information on those conservative groups, to a leftist media group funded by George Soros and others. And that media group used the information during the election cycle, to smear those conservative groups, report on their "problems" with the IRS, etc.

It is flatly illegal for the IRS to send out such confidential data, of course. That doesn't seemed to have bothered them. Whether it's also illegal for the people receiving the confidential data to publish or use it, is another question.

It shows up another difference between Obama's IRS scandals and Nixon's Watergate-era IRS scnadals, for which articles of impeachment were drawn up against him. Though Nixon sent the IRS after his opponents and investigated them (itself a crime), Nixon never sent any of the information from the IRS, to anyone outside the IRS.

It's piling VERY high and deep now.

IRS released confidential info on conservative groups to ProPublica

ProPublica on Monday reported that the same IRS division that targeted conservative groups for special scrutiny during the 2012 election cycle provided the investigative-reporting organization with confidential applications for tax-exempt status.

That revelation contradicts previous statements from the agency and may represent a violation of federal guidelines. Lois G. Lerner, who heads the IRS sector that reviews tax-exemption applications, told a congressional oversight committee in April 2012 that IRS code prohibited the agency from providing information about groups that had not yet been approved.

Reps. Darrell Issa (R-Calif.), chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, and Jim Jordan (R-Ohio) had asked Lerner in March 2012 to provide a list of all organizations that the IRS had subjected to special scrutiny.

Lerner replied that she could not legally reveal information about groups that were not approved and that identifying targeted applicants that were already approved would require additional work, specifically a “manual review of each file.” She did not identify any of the organizations.

So, essentially, the IRS told congress to go pound sand.

The truly sad aspect of all of this is. Carney, Obama, and Holder ALL claim NOT to know...so, because

it is AN ONGOING INVESTIGATION....They mutually have agreed....they can't speak about it now.

And, they'd prefer to NEVER SPEAK again.

Remember way back during the last election, when Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-NV) announced out of the blue that Mitt Romney hadn't paid any taxes in 10 years?

A lot of people asked him why he thought so. Where had he gotten this information? Reid refused to reveal the source, saying only that it was an "informed explanation".

Are we a little closer today, to finding what that source was?

Harry Reid, the Senate majority leader, ratcheted up the speculation about Mitt Romney's unreleased tax returns.

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) has what he says is an informed explanation for why Mitt Romney refuses to release additional tax returns. According to a Bain investor, Reid charged, Romney didn't pay any taxes for 10 years.

Here's the story that ProPublica published late last year (http://www.propublica.org/article/what-karl-roves-dark-money-nonprofit-told-the-irs) [2].

Karl Rove’s Dark Money Group Promised IRS It Would Spend ‘Limited’ Money on Electionsby Kim Barker (http://www.propublica.org/site/author/kim_barker/)
ProPublica, Dec. 14, 2012, 11:19 a.m

In a confidential 2010 filing (http://www.propublica.org/documents/item/537045-crossroads-gps-application-to-irs) [1], Crossroads GPS — the dark money group that spent more than $70 million from anonymous donors on the 2012 election — told the Internal Revenue Service that its efforts would focus on public education, research and shaping legislation and policy.

The group's application for recognition as a social welfare nonprofit acknowledged (http://www.propublica.org/documents/item/537045-crossroads-gps-application-to-irs#document/p4/a84315) [2] that it would spend money to influence elections, but said "any such activity will be limited in amount, and will not constitute the organization's primary purpose."

Political insiders and campaign-finance watchdogs have long questioned (http://takingnote.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/06/21/disclosure-would-be-great-then-what/) [3] how Crossroads, the brainchild of GOP strategist Karl Rove, had characterized its intentions to the IRS.

Now, for the first time, ProPublica has obtained the group's application for recognition of tax-exempt status, filed in September 2010. The IRS has not yet recognized Crossroads GPS as exempt, causing some tax experts to speculate that the agency is giving the application extra scrutiny. If Crossroads GPS is ultimately not recognized, it could be forced to reveal the identities of its donors.

I added the bolded.

um... how did ProPublica obtain the application for tax exempt status of Crossroads, PRIOR to an approval of status? According to the IRS, until approval is given, it is illegal to provide the information in the application to the public.

UPDATE: In December of 2012, ProPublica wrote (http://www.propublica.org/article/what-karl-roves-dark-money-nonprofit-told-the-irs) that they had obtained the application for recognition of tax-exempt status for Crossroads GPS, filed in September of 2010.

As the ProPublica story noted:

“‘As far as we know, the Crossroads application is still pending, in which case it seems that either you obtained whatever document you have illegally, or that it has been approved,’ Jonathan Collegio, the group’s spokesman, said in an email.

“The IRS sent Crossroads’ application to ProPublica in response to a public-records request. The document sent to ProPublica didn’t include an official IRS recognition letter, which is typically attached to applications of nonprofits that have been recognized. The IRS is only required to give out applications of groups recognized as tax-exempt.

“In an email Thursday, an IRS spokeswoman said the agency had no record of an approved application for Crossroads GPS, meaning that the group’s application was still in limbo.

The effort was about weakening obama's opposition in his second term bid!! It was illegal and also a part of obama's election campaign tactics. Who dares think obama didn't greenlight it.....-Tyr

that identifying targeted applicants that were already approved would require additional work, specifically a “manual review of each file.”

perhaps the IRS agents involved should perform that work on their spare time without pay......

The elephant in the room that almost everybody is ignoring is this greatly limited grassroots organising and its helping obama's opposition prior to his second term bid!

It was all about voter intimidation and severely limiting campaign financing of obama's opposition in the 2012 electtion! By targetting Conservative sponsors , supporters and people that were for smaller government.

Obama engineered and promoted tactics...typical Chicago styled thuggery.. -Tyr
