View Full Version : 'Homophobe' is a Meaningless word Created by Whiney Liberals

Homophobia implies that someone has a fear of homos. Liberals will tell you their invented definition of this nonsensical word, but it is meaningless.

Phobias DefinedAccording to the American Psychiatric Association, a phobia is an irrational and excessive fear of an object or situation. In most cases, the phobia involves a sense of endangerment or a fear of harm.

I don't know anyone who is afraid of homos.

Your posts show an obvious contempt for homosexuals. Therefore, by definition, you're a homophobe. Now, report THAT.

Back to the namecalling? I guess when you're not very bright you have little else to rely on. lol

Anyway, I don't have fear of lesbians or gay men, I doubt anybody does. And please show me any other phobia that is based on 'contempt'. That's ridiculous.

Thanks for proving my OP correct, by the way, that only whiney libs accuse others of the meaningless, lib-created word, 'homophobe'.

Marcus, please don't be an aggressor in every thread. I understand you take issue with perceived racism or people who take issue with homosexuals. But this can be stated or debated without getting personal. This tends to have the threads hit the shitter by the end of page one.

I call everyone dumb ass, you know that. You also know this thread is a troll thread, created specifically because I called him a homophobe in the other thread. He created this thread to get into it with me, hoping I'd post and he could start something, so what kind of person would I be if I did not oblige him just a bit? I can't help it if he thinks he's right and every dictionary in the world is wrong.

But if you'd like me to stop smacking the poor little guy around for a while, so be it.

We've gone from 'A' to 'N' and so far not a single phobia is defined by 'contempt of'.

In this case Billybob has a point. It's not good to see conservatives accepting the left's vocabulary. A moral judgement doesn't constitute an irrational fear. I'm not sure why it's such an emotional topic. There's no "freakout" factor from me, an acknowledgement that it's a form of immorality.

Did I once say he was afraid of homosexuals?

Re-read post # 2. The operative word is 'contempt', as demonstrated by his postings regarding homosexuals. He has an obvious contempt for them, which fits nearly every dictionary definition of the word homophobe. He's hiding behind the word phobia itself.

'Contempt' is not in the definition of any other phobia, proving that your definition of 'homophobia' is just made-up, liberal bullshit. If anyone is 'hiding' behind a word it's YOU.

Had you not quoted him. I would not have followed up on your reply to his quote.

I agree that Billybob has a point and rather than attack a particular poster, merely offered proof to back up his comments.

How does one fear homosexuals? Are they supposed to hop out of dark shadows and attack somebody? It means nothing. It means a fear of men. But men does not mean homosexuals. Women are also homosexuals.

Your mind runs not in streams of thought but in the mud puddles of life.

I do not expect that to be understood, at least not by you. If you read much, and understand much, there may still be hope for you yet.

First, Democrats like that term. Yet since their thoughts are almost entirely always wrong, I am not shocked they believe in such a definition. Second, I have not met any non democrat that hates homosexuals nor has fear of them.

Perhaps you speak of Muslims who simply would kill one if found.

Every word is an invented word, it convays an idea not bound by symbols alone.

If it helps you to read it as 'homoism' or some other word then fine, but to pretend that the letters used change the meaning conveyed is a red herring.

Well that was ironic xD

When you are told someone is homophobic do you think
A) They have a fear of gays
Or
B) They hate gays

If you think 'A' then as far as you're concerned the word would be 'right' if you think 'B' then that proves the word itself doesn't matter, because the meaning carries through nonetheless.

The word is, when broken down, wrong. In the same way the phase 'I could care less' is wrong when it is used to mean 'i could not care less'. Their are countless other examples of this, but what is important is what is understood, not what letters/words are used.

If you're using the term "homophobia", you're adopting the left's vocabulary. If you want to use fixation, obsession, preoccupation, shock, etc., that another conversation. What if someone were to call you "Islamophobic" ? When some uses the whatever-phobic in a political or sociological discussion, it's a manipulative tactic and generally not going to be an intelligent discussion.

Now look up Islamophobia. I'm curious to your reaction. I'm more interested in the political association of the word than the dictionary meeting. You can call a businessman "petite-bougouise" and "petite-bougouise" might even be in the dictionary and be technically correct, but have different implications. Calling a principled Christian opponent to homosexual behavior a "homophobe" is just like calling your local business owner "petite-bougouise".

Homophobia encompasses a range of negative attitudes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Attitude_%28psychology%29) and feelings toward homosexuality (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homosexuality) or people who are identified or perceived as being lesbian (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lesbian), gay (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gay), bisexual (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bisexual) or transgender (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transgender) (LGBT (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LGBT)). The National Gay and Lesbian Task Force defines "homophobia" as:

the fear and hatred of women or men who love and sexually desire those of the same sex. We also use it to mean prejudice, discrimination, harassment and acts of violence brought on by that fear, misinformation and hatred.

Homophobia includes:

Assuming that everyone you meet is heterosexual

Using the terms "gay," "lesbian," "fag," "dyke," or "queer" in an accusatory way

Feeling that lesbians, gay men, bisexuals, and transgendered people are too outspoken about LGBT rights

Not confronting a heterosexist remark, or feeling the need to clarify that you are straight when supporting LGBT rights, for fear of being identified as a lesbian, gay man, bisexual, or transgendered person.
Thinking you can "spot one"
Stereotyping gay men, lesbians, or bisexuals as promiscuous, separatists, radicals, or "recruiters," or using those terms in an accusatory way
Being afraid to shake hands with or hug a lesbian, gay man, bisexual, or transgendered person
Looking at a bisexual, lesbian, gay man, or transgendered person and immediately thinking of her/his sexuality, rather then seeing him/her as a whole, complex person

The term "homophobe" could be considered contributory to a hostile environment for certain religious beliefs.

"Homo" is made derogatory by its usage. But it is a shortened version of a word that truthfully and accurately describes gays. They are homosexuals. Whereas homophobia as a term makes no sense. It would be more accurate to describe such people "homodisgusted", or some such thing.

Some are saying that the word means 'contempt' or 'hatred' of homosexuals. But the root of the word is 'phobia'. Are there other phobia words which don't really mean to fear something, but rather to have contempt for it or hatred? I do believe that some people have a strong dislike or contempt for homosexual behavior, but they should just say it like that, instead of inventing a word that simply doesn't fit, and only serves to try and make that person out to be something they are not.

For example, I have a very strong dislike for the NY Giants, does that mean I have giantaphobia? I have a VERY strong dislike for those that abuse women, and find them VERY contemptuous, does that mean I have abuserphobia? In other words, I'll own up to my statements and feelings, but at least label me correctly instead of trying to vilify by changing.

Regardless of the basis for most other 'phobias', the common usage that has evolved for the word 'homophobic' or homophobia', does NOT require fear to be involved.

Recognized types of homophobia include institutionalized homophobia, e.g. religious homophobia and state-sponsored homophobia,[7] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-7) and internalized homophobia, experienced by people who have same-sex attractions, regardless of how they identify. How about it, BB? Me think you doth protest too much. J. Edgar Hoover was gay, yet he led witch hunts against gays among others.

Here's the thing, you can post definitions from 99 different sources, but they still wouldn't be correct. A phobia is a specific term, and no other phobia am I aware of that doesn't contain 'fear', and no others I can think of mean hate or contempt instead. I believe you with the definitions, and that's how it's explained - but it's still an incorrect term meant to vilify those against homosexuality instead of merely explaining their feelings. How about just "This man detests homosexuality, or this man disagrees with homosexuality". The few extra words/characters won't kill people. But they prefer the incorrect word as it vilifies or makes them look like they have some sort of condition, and also allows people to lump everyone who disagrees with homosexuality, regardless of their reasons, into one incorrect group.

Think of it this way... Xerox vs. copy. Is it more correct to say 'I'll Xerox this right away' or 'I'll copy this right away'? Of course, the answer is 'I'll copy this right away', everyone knows this. However, a great number of people still to this day say 'Xerox' instead of copy. It has come to men copy in their vernacular.

Is 'homophbia' technically the correct way to say what the definitions I have posted for it is? No. But it has come to mean that in the common vernacular. When somethign is used often enough to mean something, it 'becomes' commonplace and generally recognized as the 'correct' way to say something... even if it 'technically' isn't.

Not completely, no.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia

Coined by George Weinberg (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Weinberg_%28psychologist%29), a psychologist (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Psychology), in the 1960s,[10] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-10) the term homophobia is a blend (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blend)[11] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-11)[12] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-12)[13] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-13) of (1) the word homosexual, itself a mix of neo-classical morphemes (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morpheme), and (2) phobia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Phobia) from the Greek φόβος, Phóbos, meaning "fear" or "morbid fear". Weinberg is credited as the first person to have used the term in speech.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-herek-9) The word homophobia first appeared in print in an article written for the May 23, 1969, edition of the American tabloid (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tabloid_%28newspaper_format%29) Screw (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Screw_magazine), in which the word was used to refer to heterosexual men's fear that others might think they are gay.[9] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia#cite_note-herek-9)

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Weinberg_%28psychologist%29

Weinberg is known for several major contributions to psychotherapy. He coined the word “homophobia (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Homophobia)” (in his revolutionary 1972 book, Society and the Healthy Homosexual (http://www.librarything.com/work/138020)) to propose that those who harbor prejudice against homosexuals, and not homosexuals themselves, are suffering from a psychological malady, an irrational state of mind.

What I am hearing from people like Tailfins, is that homosexuals suffer form a psychological malady, and saying so in a derogatory manner is acceptable... but the idea that it's heterosexuals who suffer a psychological malady in regards to homosexuals, that's a dirty smear and unacceptable. Got it.
