Here are some interesting political stats about Detroit.

Race and ethnicity [edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Detroit&action=edit&section=22)]As of the 2010 Census, the racial composition of the city was:

82.7% Black or African American (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_American);
10.6% White (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White_American) (7.8% non-Hispanic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Non-Hispanic_whites)

Politics [edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Detroit&action=edit&section=25)]Politically, the city consistently supports the Democratic Party (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Party_(United_States)) in state, local and national elections. According to a study released by the Bay Area Center for Voting Research, Detroit is the most "liberal" large city in America,[186] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-186) measuring only the percentage of city residents who voted for the Democratic Party.[187] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-187)
In 2000, the City requested an investigation by the United States Justice Department (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_Justice_Department) into the Detroit Police Department (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Police_Department) which was concluded in 2003 over allegations regarding its use of force and civil rights violations. The city proceeded with a major reorganization of the Detroit Police Department.[188] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-188)
Beginning with its incorporation in 1802, Detroit has had a total of 74 mayors (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mayors_of_Detroit,_Michigan). Detroit's last mayor from the Republican Party was Louis Miriani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Louis_Miriani) who served from 1957 to 1962. In 1973, the city elected its first black mayor, Coleman Young (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Coleman_Young). Despite development efforts, his combative style during his five terms in office was not well received by many suburban residents.[189] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-189) Mayor Dennis Archer (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dennis_Archer), a former Michigan Supreme Court Justice, refocused the city's attention on redevelopment with a plan to permit three casinos downtown. By 2008, three major casino resort hotels established operations in the city.

Crime [edit (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Detroit&action=edit&section=24)]Further information: Crime in Detroit (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Crime_in_Detroit) and Detroit Police Department (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit_Police_Department)
Detroit has serious problems with crime, having the sixth highest total rate of violent crime and the highest per capita rate of violent crime among the 25 largest U.S. cities in 2007.[179] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-UCR-179) Nearly two-thirds of all murders in Michigan in 2008 occurred in Detroit.[179] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-UCR-179) Although the rate of violent crime dropped 11 percent in 2008,[180] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-180) violent crime in Detroit has not declined as much as the national average from 2007 to 2011.[179] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-UCR-179) The violent crime rate is one of the highest in the United States. Neighborhoodscout.com reported a crime rate of 62.18 per 1,000 residents for property crimes, and 16.73 per 1,000 for violent crimes (compared to national figures of 32 per 1,000 for property crimes and 5 per 1,000 for violent crime in 2008).[181] (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Detroit#cite_note-Detroit_crime_rates_and_statistics-181)

I was chatting briefly a week or two back with a young lady that handled one of my services. She said that Detroit has a lot of bad stuff but also has some beautiful parts.

I keep wanting to compare it to Oakland, CA where a huge number of negros live and if you don't mind getting shot, not a bad city to live in so long as you are up where the more wealthy live. Up in the hills. Seems daily I hear of several people being shot to death there. I wonder if they stab people? Surely some do.

A friend of mine from Detroit was here just a couple hours ago and we lamented the destruction of his hometown over a couple of beers. No wonder he no longer lives there.

Detroit isn't the only city that has decayed to this point.

things got a little frantic a few years back in the Michigan legislature......we seem to have accumulated a lot of state funding laws that were only applicable to "municipalities with a population of 1 million or greater".....unfortunately it turned out after the 2000 census that Detroit no longer was and Grand Rapids (a conservative stronghold) had grown to qualify.....you never saw such a scramble to repeal existing laws.....

Detroit is a shithole because most of the people who work moved out long ago to get away from the crime and decay.

The ones left elect criminals who promise to give them stuff.

I am constantly amazed at the people who continue to elect democrates in these big cities who promise to make things better. Only to see things decline. Chicago, St Louis and New Orleans come to mind at cities with 40 plus yrs of dem control, sinking econimies and crime rates that are through the roof.

When you have an 82% black population, you are guaranteed to have dems in office forever. At least until the money runs out and Republicans start promising freebies.

true, blacks are the only voting bloc that vote dem 80-90% of the time. One has to wonder why they seem to refuse to think for themselves. In just about every election whites are split pretty evenly, Asians and hispanics have around a 40-60 split between the parties.
