View Full Version : Cheaper to sign up for Obamacare, or to pay the penalty?

Reports are coming out now that say the cheapest Obamacare plan for a family of four, costs around $20,000.

If that family does not sign up for Obamacare, and just pays the penalty it calls for, (oops, the Supremes say that's a "tax" now)... then how much to they pay?

BTW, they pay the penalty only if they are due an Income Tax refund on April 15, right? If they have to write the govt a check on April 15 instead, then the govt can't charge them that Obamacare penalty.

So, is that family of 4 better off financially if they don't sign up for Obamacare? And if one of them does get sick or injured, then they can sign up at that point, and the Obamacare insurance company must take them, even though the sickness or injury is now a "pre-existing condition".

So, what's the best deal, dollar-wise? Pay $20,000 for Obamacare, or pay only the penalty on April 15 (which might be zero), and then sign up later if you get sick or injured and pay only that fraction of the $20,000? After you are cured, then of course you drop the Obamacare policy immediately, to minimize what you pay... until the next time you get sick.

Getting Obamacare as cheap as possible is only the first hurdle. Then you have to go through the IRS and their politically driven pecking order as to when you might actually get medical attention. Then there are the death panels to deal with. If everybody is cheating the system, the death panels will continue to raise the requirements to which you can even get the medical attention you need.

But yeah, Obamacare is a great solution to the 'health care crisis'.

If everybody is cheating the system,

What "cheating"?

Everything I described, is 100% within the law.

It's just an expression. And I think it was specifically designed to be that way to drive all health insurance companies out of business thus making the fed the sole provider for health insurance. The government can never be too big for libs.

Dollar wise, pay the small tax if owed.

I plan to do exactly that. The first year penalty is 1% of income.

What if I already have insurance and it only costs me (an individual) me $4,500/year? I pay no penalty and don't have to purchase Obamacare. (Actually, it currently only costs me half that because ex is paying half.)

You're good as long as it meets all the new crazy-town requirements.

It's CHCBP (which is like COBRA for Tricare) and I hope it continues to qualify.

I'm sure it will as will almost any plan out there. If not then no one would buy it as they would be paying for a health plan AND paying the penalty.

Obama himself told us, that if we like our present insurance, we can keep it.

Would he lie?

Now that we have seen how Obama uses the IRS to silence critics - why would anyone have an issue with the IRS overseeing your medical records?

Thanks to Obamacare, all Americans will now have to submit their health insurance information (http://blog.heritage.org/2013/05/30/the-irs-obamacare-and-you-the-irs-will-know-your-health-insurance-info/) to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS). Sadly, this new requirement comes at the same time that serious questions have been raised about the IRS’s ability to manage personal health records competently.

As American Enterprise Institute scholar Scott Gottlieb noted (http://www.forbes.com/sites/scottgottlieb/2013/05/15/the-irs-raids-60-million-personal-medical-records/):

An unnamed health care provider in California is suing the IRS and 15 unnamed agents, alleging that they improperly seized some 60 million medical records of 10 million Americans, including medical records of all California state judges, on March 11, 2011.

The complaint alleges that IRS agents exceeded the scope of their search warrant, seizing not just financial records, but “information on psychological counseling, gynecological counseling, sexual and drug treatment, and other sensitive medical treatment data.”

The alleged data seizure occurred at roughly the same time in which employees in another division of the IRS targeted tea party and other conservative groups (http://www.latimes.com/news/politics/la-pn-irs-improperly-targeting-conservatives-20130510,0,7187034.story) due to their political beliefs. If true, these new allegations regarding seized medical records would further undermine trust in the IRS’s ability to conduct its affairs properly and to manage the sensitive and confidential information all Americans submit to the agency every year.

As this week’s entire series has shown, the IRS’s reach within Obamacare seemingly knows no bounds. Armed with new bureaucrats and funded by a massive spending blitz, the IRS will implement trillions of dollars in tax increases; issue new regulations, edicts, and orders; impose new paperwork burdens on all Americans; and increase the scope of government intrusion into the lives of ordinary, law-abiding citizens.

Prior to the recent scandals, many Americans thought the IRS could not be trusted to implement Obamacare in a competent and impartial manner. Now they know it. It’s one more reason why Congress should repeal Obamacare once and for all.

My question is who can afford to buy their own ins in this Obama "recovery"? Not only that, one would have to have a job that provides the income to buy the policy - given unemployment is really around 9 to 10% alot of people do not have the funds available

However, it is not like people were not told this would happen when Dems rammed this massive tax bill through despite the warnings and protests

So, is it financially better for a family to sign up to pay $20,000/yr as the IRS describes? Or to drop Obamacare and pay the penalty (which could be zero if you do your taxes right), and then sign up only when one of your family gets sick; then to drop the policy after he is cured?

Obama lied when he said we could keep our own health insurance, and doctor. Obama, and Obamacare are in agreement that...WE THE PEOPLE should not be permitted to choose our own healthcare provider or doctors.
Obamacare...is the purest form of Socialism, and those who run it..calling it Obamacare...want, and need to control WE THE PEOPLE in everything we do.
It's literally a form of Blackmail. Either we do it the OBAMACARE way, or we get punished by the government who claims we NEED THEM.

Ahhh. That explains why student loans are part of Obamacare. No, not really.

This is a massive trainwreck just waiting to happen.
