Global warming 'is three times faster than worst predictions'

Global warming is accelerating three times more quickly than feared, a series of startling, authoritative studies has revealed.

They have found that emissions of carbon dioxide have been rising at thrice the rate in the 1990s. The Arctic ice cap is melting three times as fast - and the seas are rising twice as rapidly - as had been predicted.

News of the studies - which are bound to lead to calls for even tougher anti-pollution measures than have yet been contemplated - comes as the leaders of the world's most powerful nations prepare for the most crucial meeting yet on tackling climate change.
The issue will be top of the agenda of the G8 summit which opens in the German Baltic resort of Heiligendamm on Wednesday, placing unprecedented pressure on President George Bush finally to agree to international measures.

Tony Blair flies to Berlin today to prepare for the summit with its host, Angela Merkel, the German chancellor. They will discuss how to tackle President Bush, who last week called for action to deal with climate change, which his critics suggested was instead a way of delaying international agreements.

Yesterday, there were violent clashes in the city harbour of Rostock between police and demonstrators, during a largely peaceful march of tens of thousands of people protesting against the summit.

The study, published by the US National Academy of Sciences, shows that carbon dioxide emissions have been increasing by about 3 per cent a year during this decade, compared with 1.1 per cent a year in the 1990s.

The significance is that this is much faster than even the highest scenario outlined in this year's massive reports by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) - and suggests that their dire forecasts of devastating harvests, dwindling water supplies, melting ice and loss of species are likely to be understating the threat facing the world.
The study found that nearly three-quarters of the growth in emissions came from developing countries, with a particularly rapid rise in China. The country, however, will resist being blamed for the problem, pointing out that its people on average still contribute only about a sixth of the carbon dioxide emitted by each American. And, the study shows, developed countries, with less than a sixth of the world's people, still contribute more than two-thirds of total emissions of the greenhouse gas.

On the ground, a study by the University of California's National Snow and Ice Data Center shows that Arctic ice has declined by 7.8 per cent a decade over the past 50 years, compared with an average estimate by IPCC computer models of 2.5 per cent.
In yesterday's clashes, masked protesters hurled flagpoles, stones and bottles and attacked with sticks forcing police to retreat. The police said they were suffering "massive assaults" and that the situation was "very chaotic". They put the size of the demonstration at 25,000; organisers said it was 80,000.

yadda, yadda, yadda

It’s time to start thinking about this!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Predictions? These guys are no better at predicting global warming than Madame Cleo is at predicting the future.

I predict there will be a few comments slamming my opinion.

as much as I care about the earth, there is one fact that makes all this global warming stuff bullshit, the leaders aren't trying to minimize polution they are trying to create yet another global agency to collect money and wealth, even bigger than the ones we already have... it's sad really... accelerate global "problem", accelerate the global desperation, accelerate the global agency, accelerate the global government... it's just one step closer.

any real respected scientist will tell you that just because emmisions are increasing during the same period that ice is melting faster and ocean levels rising does not mean it's man made... but surely it all makes sense because the worlds big solution is a carbon TAX, which in the one country that already has it, corporate functions are EXEMPT!... this is the classic create a problem to create your quasi-solution that never solves anything and keeps your solution going strong for as long as you like.

created or not, it's being exploited... whether it's created is irrelevant, the fact that everyone is saying there is a problem and offering up solutions that only take money away from citizens and not actually trying to solve the problem is suspicious of a created problem, and even if it is a real problem, they have everyone fooled into thinking they care, when they don't... there are two types of global warming believers, those who exploit it, and those who believe the exploiters have finally come around because they really want to solve the problem and are too stupid to know the difference... whether it's really man made or not is irrelevant, it's the reaction to it i'm suspicious of.

what the hell are you talking about? I just said the existence of global warming and how man made it is doesn't matter to me, all the sources in the world won't change my opinion that people in power are exploiting it for money and power more than they are trying to solve whatever problem it is or they even say it is... my opinion on that matter is not based on the facts of the case for or against global warming, it's in spite of global warming, this could be about smog or carbon terrorists or any damn thing, it doesn't change the fact that the way people in power worldwide are suggesting we handle it is wrong and decietful and will send us up shit creek much faster and much deeper than any amount of global warming ever will... even if it's 10 times worse than all the predictions.

now compare that with the above quote you altered... you only make yourself look like an idiot when you try to foil with my words.

it's not even worth it when a few select people decide to turn an intelligent conversation into a competition of i told you so's... well have fun picking through this for a damning quote of randomly selected words.

Yes when it snowed in late April this year I was complaining about global cooling. Global warming my ass.

it's amazing how inadequate and sporadic these "experts" tools and measurements are and how that is largley ignored by anyone claiming to know exactly what is going on... I can't say global warming isn't happening but to claim it's a certainty and is definitely caused by human kind is absurd... the only places the temperature is really rising is in and around urban areas, and that is more due to the fact of the increased heat absorption of concrete and industrial buildings affecting trapped heat, and the sun is slowly getting hotter and closer... I can't say for sure, but that seems much more reasonable than carbon dioxide, a natural occuring gas which doesn't seem to have any effect on the earth's heat, that can be proven anyway, but it does look scary, so cower and say we're all gonna be sizzling.

you can say ice caps all you want, until the snow starts melting in my hometown of maine where we constantly get snow november through april, it had been fairly snowless for a few years with record lows and then we got the cold and the snow this winter, if it weren't for all these a-holes telling us about ice caps that are ALWAYS melting in some places and expanding in others I wouldn't even have guessed the world was warming... go figure.

And never mind the fact that the world has been naturally warming up since the last Ice Age. Also the Earth was much warmer than it is today, and had no ice at all during the Cretaceous period. Yet life thrived and the Earth still ended up cooling later on.

You know when I see studies that report how poorly the previous studies were conducted, I have to question how well this current study was performed.

It is this type of hoopla that makes me think the "scientist" dont know shit about what they think they know...

Is the earth heating up probably, is it being caused by man maybe a little, is it cyclic more than likely...
