Anyone have a regular workout regiment? If so what is it?

I wouldn't call myself a health nut. I could definitely eat healthier though I do a decent job. I do though work out religiously which is what keeps me in top shape. Since I joined the CG out of high school I've been faithful to regular exercising though now that I'm in my mid 40s it's getting more challenging. Monday through Friday I do the following first thing in the morning. Takes me about 2 to 2 and a half hours depending on how much I'm slacking.

5 mile run
200 situps
100 pushups
20 pullups
Various dumbbell and other weight exercises
Finish it off with a 20 minute brisk swim in the ocean

Sometimes I jump in my pool later in the day and do a few dozen laps or so in addition to the above. I love swimming and it's great exercise if done right.

What do you all do? I'm pretty passionate and knowledgable about working out so if anyone has any questions I can help out and steer you in the right direction.

Damn, that's a helluva workout!! I just do some cardio at the gym, on the bicycle, then hit some curling, triceps, chest exercises, weight "axe" exercises for the mid section, sometimes some pull-ups and then off to the steam room for as long as I can handle it.

i GOT TIRED JUST READING YOUR WORKOUT

Seriously spent the last 25 years or so driving across this great country of ours my work out consisted of holding a steering wheel 15 to 20 hours a day and then climbing in the bunk to get a few hours sleep , I wish I could have done it different and now as my youngest boys want to get into working out I try and work out with them as much as possible but some days the pain is to much, but take it from someone that wishes they had your workout is great and will help you down the road

Work what?! Out where?! HA! Routine?

My routine in my "creakiness" is to wake up, lie there for a while and watch the fan go round and round, sit up, stretch all the stiffness out and then fix a stiff cup of strong coffee. I may or may not fix breakfast but do fix breakfast for me and my better half before the kids get up. This is usually early so we have our coffee first and then a second cuppa with either:

(1) Grits, toast and beacon followed with more toast and some sort of preserves (strawberry or blackberry).

(2) Eggs, beacon (OR/AND ham, sausage) biscuits and some more biscuits (with honey or molasses).

(3) Beacon (or/and ham & sausage) with biscuits and TOMATO GRAVY. Followed with MORE tomato gravy over biscuits or (the sugary toppings above).

(4) .....or simply GRITS & SHRIMP -w- toast.

*Just making these fantastic breakfasts are an exercise in and of itself so I don't feel so guilty when I eat it. HA!!!! I do eat pretty good most of the time (ribeye 10% of the time, fish n chicken 40% of the time and home grown vegetables 45% of the time with the rest being desserts (often time healthy desserts but sometime VERY unhealthy). I rarely do the more exotic seafoods such as crab, mullosks or lobster but Gulf Shrimp, Mississippi Farm Raised Catfish, BASS, Red Snapper, Red Fish and Flounder are always welcome at my house. HA!!!

Seriously though, I've not been "active duty" in any significant exercise since the glory days of my football & track years.

I have, over the years, gotten my periodic exercise in by keeping my hunting/fishing place clean and managed but even that has slowed over the past few years. I have ALWAYS kept myself in firewood (spitting six or so cords the old fashioned way). I have a 4.5 ton Rheem AC/heat but I love and prefer to warm the house the old fashioned way via my Buck stove in the den/dining area. The main reason for cutting wood, however, has been to keep my many roads clean at my hunting place. I've never needed an ATV because of all the roads and they make for GREAT shooting lanes and it does keep one in shape cuz it is a LOT of work to cut, clear, split, haul and stack (not to mention keeping the fire going 24/7 for the 3 - 4 months of cool weather.

Still, it is nowhere in comparison to what you do or what I once did. My football coach (God rest his soul) put our team through what can only be described as a military schedule (whether it was 30 degrees in late season or 110 degrees during Summer training). Nobody ever died but a many of us passed out. We were tough though and beat most of our opponents 45 & 50 to ZERO!!! We won State and went State several times. A few even went pro....others became successful businessmen as well as coaches. I was also very good in the Track n Field and went State two years in a row and North half meets another two years where I participated in the 120 high hurdles, the 440 relay, mile relay and the two mile relay and the two mile run (a Jeff Burbank in CA has this record at around 8:40) with my time being not to shabby at 13:05:61 I was lean, tall and fast with a great deal of GRIT and every ounce of these qualities were needed to participate in so many events in less than a full day. Not much time was available in recouping from the previous event. I truly believe that too much is too much. Like a car, we can judge ourselves by HOW we were used and maintained and "hot rodding" all over the place for a significant amount of time is neither good on a car or a human being (especially as the car or individual ages).

I'd suggest reducing your workout just as much as I SHOULD take my advise in doing more than I do (if for any reason at all, to keep my joints working properly without "kinks"). I do shoot a bow (sometimes high poundage....sometimes low poundage) and I usually shoot only one arrow at a time which forces me to think about my release and over all shot. This also, from an exercise point of view, forces me to walk the 30 yds or so over and and over and over while practicing an hour or two. I also do much walking during turkey season and some climbing and blind building during deer season. This may not sound like a lot but if you were to follow some of my hunts, it'd probably leave you with a decent workout while dodging and ducking undergrowth or crossing hills, hollows and creeks. It isn't near what you do, OF COURSE, but isn't what I once did when I did work out (which was usually 3 sets of 60 on DIPS, 3 sets of 30 push-ups, 3 sets of 60 crunches, 3 sets of 20 pull ups, 3 sets of 10 squats @ 250-300 or 1-1.5X's my body wait at that time. 3 sets of 180 or 210lbs on the bench press (depending on my mood) and then top it all off with a 4 mile run (because that was the route back and forth that I took from my house to the lake and back).

I tried to pick at least 1/4 of the above workout schedule up after I turned 40 but it was simply too much and my joints couldn't take it. I realize that my eating habits are less than productive but I do love my vittles and life is short (too short even for the best of us) so I opted out of doing anything but enjoy the few years I have left and make sure that I'm in shape enough to hunt as I've always hunted (to a certain extent). HA!!! The way I see it; if I can teach my (yet to arrive) grandchildren how to hunt, fish, fight and WORK or at least see them graduate, I'll consider myself a blessed individual. The older one gets, the wiser and with all the hours spent in excessive exercise much of life is wasted (especially when considering Murphy's Law....or the unseen bus). HA!

Have a great day, ALL. This morning, I actually had a granola bar, banana and a cup of coffee so the thread here that I saw earlier has actually done some good....but I'm already hungry and have much to do today so I'm sure I'll probably have an unhealthy BLTC (beacon, lettuce, tomato and cheese) for lunch. HA!!!

Thanks for the post, Wild Duck....keep it up (the posts that is). The workout can GO because you're making the rest of us look bad!!! HA!!! Your post did make me think about old times and it is always extremely interesting to read about such a dedicated individual as yourself. My hat is off to your sir but the older you get, the more you're gonna have to ease up on the wear and tear.

Jeff, I couldn't agree more about the job situations. I don't put my nose to the grindstone as much as I once did (from early in the morning to EARLY N THE MORNING....literally) but that does take an enormous toll on your body. I try to be more active now and have significantly reduced my client list but the last 7 or 8 years at a desk have truly destroyed my eyes and health more than I would guess eating poorly, smoking or drinking could do. I say this with experience because my favorite uncle is a master electrician who supervises all the electrical work on the casino ship yards has eaten little over the years, ate not-so-healthy and was a chain smoker who LOVED any caffeinated drink.

If my uncle didn't have a COKE or cuppa strong, BLACK coffee in his hand....he had a cigarette in his hand YET he was always a great swimmer and could hold his breath longer than anyone I know. He always seemed to be in good, thin shape and was always very dark complected. I never heard him cough and if anyone could have been a truck driver, he could cuz he LOVES to travel and can go and Go and GO till he gets to where he's going. I've seen this on more than one occasssion and we always joke that he truly missed his "calling". I suppose his abilities are simply a natural thing that some have and some don't but he has been a bachelor now for 4 or 5 years after losing his VERY Christian wife to cancer (and she always ate well, NEVER smoked and was extremely moderate if ever drinking cokes or coffee). He is also a devout Christian and is even a song director and never smoked around his kids or wife (much because he was always working from the time he got up at 3:30 or 4:00 to the time he came home from the job at 5:30 or 6. Simply an EverReady battery!!!!

My mom was always very thin and ate very well with an exercise program of long walks uphill. I lost her to cancer a few days before Christmas last year. I know it doesn't seem fair and I wish that life was fair cuz I know many who like their whiskey their smoke and they live long, LONG lives without ever darkening the door to a hospital. Go figure....

Have a good one everybody. Time to git' to work.
