After a disgruntled dock worker set a fire aboard a US nuclear submarine, the Navy was going to repair it and send it back out to sea.

But with budget cuts under the Obama administration, they have changed their minds, and will scrap it.

Elections have consequences. A weakened military is one of them.

PORTLAND, Maine (AP) -- The Navy has decided to scrap the USS Miami instead of repairing the nuclear-powered submarine because of budget cuts accompanied by growing costs of repairing damage from a fire set by a civilian worker at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, officials said Tuesday.

Rear Adm. Rick Breckenridge, director of undersea warfare, said repairing the Groton, Conn.-based sub would have meant canceling work on dozens of other ships because of new budget constraints. He said that would've hurt the Navy's overall readiness.

"The Navy and the nation simply cannot afford to weaken other fleet readiness in the way that would be required to afford repairs to Miami," Breckenridge said in a statement.

Sounds like the proper decision to me. But then. Who am I?

I'd prefer to see the threatened sequestration funds used to keep the present Active Duty Navy, and ships operating, rather than risking many Billions to repair the Miami, and then placing her in mothballs.

Other than how Obama, Congress, and the Defense Secy are happily destroying our present military. Eventually. It seems Politics, and Elections for a DEFENSELESS Nation is more important, and more appeasing to the DEFUNCT Terror threats Obama brags so much about.

Agreed. Which is why I expect to learn, later on. They will keep her in commission for Inport Training, since Groton is where Submarine School is. Great hands-on, On the job training, on an Inactive status because of the NUKE reactor, and the security involved.

Aboutime is a Navy man thru and thru. Can not blame him for his pride in the Navy and its greatness. I know he has vast amount of knowledge on that score. I am speaking of the damage Obama as CiC can do to any of our military branches and I fully expect he will concentrate on weakening our Navy because he likely has agreed to at China's behest! Let's not miss how the bastard works against us and for our enemies! Anybody still deluded enough not to understand that China is our enemy I feel sorry for yet some are still that ffing deluded.. Aboutime knows all this and more however he is not about to agree to anything that downgrades the Navy, the Navy he so proudly and dutifully served his career in! Hell, I don't blame him for that. He is right about the awesome might of our Navy(!) but Obama can change that in a relatively short time ! I fully expect bamboy to do just that ! Hell, I salute both you guys for your sacrifice, service and patriotism... You guys are owed a debt this nation can never pay IMHO.... -Tyr

Inspections revealed a significant number of components in the torpedo room and auxiliary machinery room would require replacement, further driving up the repair costs for the USS Miami. The Navy originally said it planned to repair the submarine but the discovery of additional damage raised the cost, originally estimated to be about $450 million.
A shipyard worker, Casey James Fury, of Portsmouth, N.H., was sentenced to 17 years in prison after admitting he set fire to the Miami, which was in dry dock during a 20-month overhaul at the Kittery shipyard. It took 12 hours and the efforts of more than 100 firefighters to save the Los Angeles-class attack submarine. Seven people were hurt.------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- BYE, BYE --ONE NUKE SUB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!--Tyr

I'm not challenging your claim, but really a link would be good about now.

Ok, here's the deal in my way of thinking. Obama really dislikes the military. While the air force should now be our #1 go to branch; the Navy, including the marines and air force, is our #1 go to.

Note, I don't blame Obama for the issues of inter-branch rivalries, they've been there since at least Lincoln.

Systematically the military is being used to discredit the US, though the decisions are political. Truth is the administration is attempting to turn the people against the military.

They may want to turn to Egypt for advice.

Obama would love to weaken greatly every branch but priority will be given to the Navy for it projects our power around the world better than the other branches. As I've highlighted several times China is going big on its Navy and spending like crazy to increase its size and power! They are not spending all those hundreds of billions of defensive capabilities but the larger chunk is going into offensive capabilities. Of particular concern is their engineering of an anti-aircraft carrier missile designed to take out American aircraft carriers! This is information we have that there is no doubt about ,its solid. So what better than for the Chinese to pressure our little scum Obama to reduce our Naval capabilities ? And he being all for doing that anyways goes full bore along with it and likely bartered something for himself in the bargain(political?). -Tyr
