Since so many people are against the Immigration Bill im curious about something.... Let's say you were one of the Senators drafting an Immigration Bill, what would you put in there to fix the problems? Make it serious if possible..........

close the borders.

Go after businesses that hire illegals with heavy fines for first offense, jail time for second offense and double the fine.

No SSI or welfare to anyone not here legally.

That will dry up the reason for them to come and stay. Deportation won't be necessary as they will all go back if they can't get work or welfare.

Any illegal that commits a crime gets an automatic 5 years added to his sentence

Increase the guest worker limits.

There is no doubt in my mind that we need immigration reform and any kind will include a form of amnesty. which the latest attempt was. We simply can't just get rid of 12 million people. To make it work, we must

1. Require them to pay past income taxes, but leave off the fines.

2. set up a guest worker program using the ones already here(obviously wherever possible but with necessary exceptions) and only add to it where really necessary.

3. set up an adequate ID system to keep control of the situation, Preferably a Photo ID System which could incorperate present state required Photo Ids, such as Drivers licenses, etc.

4. Stop employers from hiring those who remain illegal, with fines, and or prison, but allow the employers and/or prospective employers to assist employees in getting legal.

5. No welfare for illegals, except sufficient to keep them healthy wihile getting them out of the country. but stiil allowing them to become legal as an alternative.

6. do NOt require them to go home and then come back. that would just add more problems.

More incidentals, but this is sufficient to get the ball rolling.
(note;, I didn't include fences.) they are nearly worthless.

Not all at once, no. But we can to things to get them to leave, and deport the ones we find.

To make it work, we must

1. Require them to pay past income taxes, but leave off the fines.

That's a better deal than American citizens get on paying back taxes! Pretty lenient, aren't you?

2. set up a guest worker program using the ones already here(obviously wherever possible but with necessary exceptions) and only add to it where really necessary.

I wouldn't allow another "guest worker" into America until we deal with the illegals that are already here. Or didn't you know that roughly half of illegals came to America on a temporary work visa?

3. set up an adequate ID system to keep control of the situation, Preferably a Photo ID System which could incorperate present state required Photo Ids, such as Drivers licenses, etc.

We already have that, and they fake the IDs. What would be better would be an instant green card verification system.

4. Stop employers from hiring those who remain illegal, with fines, and or prison, but allow the employers and/or prospective employers to assist employees in getting legal.

I agree with part 1 wholeheartedly. Part 2, I say if an illegal comes looking for work, your first phone call should be to INS.

5. No welfare for illegals, except sufficient to keep them healthy wihile getting them out of the country. but stiil allowing them to become legal as an alternative.

In other words, 'here, become a citizen, and then we'll give you welfare?' No thanks. Let their home country take care of them.

6. do NOt require them to go home and then come back. that would just add more problems.

It would FIX the problem, because they'd go home and we'd make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to come back.

(note;, I didn't include fences.) they are nearly worthless.

Since we don't currently have a fence along our border, how would you know how effective they are?

Not all at once, no. But we can to things to get them to leave, and deport the ones we find. Nope, too little, too late.

That's a better deal than American citizens get on paying back taxes! Pretty lenient, aren't you? Perhaps I wasn't specific enough I was talking about the fines BUSH wanted to levy because they are here illegally. That is a non-starter. (Not Tax penalties.)

I wouldn't allow another "guest worker" into America until we deal with the illegals that are already here. Or didn't you know that roughly half of illegals came to America on a temporary work visa? so? do you want to throw out the Baby with the bath water??. It might be important to import certain types of workers.

We already have that, and they fake the IDs. What would be better would be an instant green card verification system. not photo IDs----- so will these green cards have photos and thumbprints on them???,

I agree with part 1 wholeheartedly. Part 2, I say if an illegal comes looking for work, your first phone call should be to INS. obviously because you think we can weed them out that way. (see my first comment herein)

In other words, 'here, become a citizen, and then we'll give you welfare?' No thanks. Let their home country take care of them. Nope those are your words, not mine. please reread what I said.

It would FIX the problem, because they'd go home and we'd make it difficult, if not impossible, for them to come back. Now how do you propose to do that,? like we've stemed the tide thus far???

Since we don't currently have a fence along our border, how would you know how effective they are? we have a partial fence now which they tunnel under, climb over, break thru, or go arround. It is not very effective.

Simply, enforce the laws already on the books. Specifically:

1. Close the borders.
2. Fine employers seriously for 1st hiring of illegals. More seriously for second. Jail time for subsequent.
3. No more anchor babies. That was for the problems with Jim Crow laws, it's over.
4. Up the number of legal immigrant numbers, substantially. Take care on background checks and skills actually needed in this country.

1. Close borders
2. No anchor babies
3. No citizenship for illegal immigrants ever. They have to come in legally or they can never be citizens.
4. No social benefits (although I think no social benefits for anyone even if they are citizens would be good too, socialism sucks).
5. Massive deportation. Particularly with the ones committing crimes here.
6. Local law enforcement being allowed to inquire and arrest illegals.

There is lots that can be done.

1. doesn't work
2. agreed
3. It would take a constitutional Amendment to do that, but even now, we don't have to treat the families of anchor babies as citizens. the constitution only provides for those who are born here. NOT all their relatives. That part could be done away with.
4. A mixed bag of ??????????????

re: #1. You don't know that closing off the borders doesn't work, because it's never been tried!

re: #3. It would not take a Constitutional Amendment. Congress passed plenty of laws regulating citizenship after the 14th Amendment was passed. American Indians and children of Chinese immigrants, for example, were not granted immediate citizenship just because they were born within America's boundaries.
