July 4th self-funded fireworks displays always tend to get out-of-hand.

I remember one year a friend who was a contractor, and had a 20' length of 3" pvc pipe hanging around. After launching several large rockets correctly, I had the bright idea to use the pipe as a launcher. So we tied it nearly vertical to a high porch railing and then one guy lifted the bottom, a second placed the rocket in the bottom of the tube and I lit the fuse. The first guy dropped the pipe and the rocket took off, only to get hung up in the pipe about half way. We could see the bright rocket flame burning through the pipe wall. You should have seen the three of us and the five or so other adults move away, pushing kids out of the way in the process. :laugh:

My friends elderly father chided me about that every time I saw him after that. :laugh:
