http://hosted.ap.org/dynamic/stories/U/US_HEALTH_OVERHAUL_PROBLEMS?SITE=MOCAP&SECTION=HOME&TEMPLATE=DEFAULT WASHINGTON (AP) -- Planting a paltry number on a national disappointment, the Obama administration revealed Wednesday that just 26,794 people enrolled for health insurance during the first, flawed month of operations for the federal "Obamacare" website.

Adding in enrollment of more than 79,000 in the 14 states with their own websites, the nationwide number of 106,000 October sign-ups was barely one-fifth of what officials had projected - and a small fraction of the millions who have received widely publicized private coverage cancellations as a result of the federal law.

The White House raced to reassure anxious Democrats who are worried about the controversial program, which they voted into existence three years ago and which seems sure to be a major issue in next year's election campaigns. The administration, trying to regain the initiative, for the first time indicated a willingness to consider legislation to stave off the wave of cancellations that's compounding the website technology problems.

Some Democrats are seeking changes in Obama's signature program, and key Republicans, many pressing for repeal, said that even Wednesday's feeble sign-up figures appeared to be pumped up. The final number - 106,185 people - would be even smaller if it counted only those who finalized their enrollment by actually paying their first month's premium, Republicans said.

Administration officials and senior congressional Democrats expressed confidence in the program's future. "We expect enrollment will grow substantially throughout the next five months," said Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, who is in overall charge.

"Even with the issues we've had, the marketplace is working and people are enrolling," Sebelius said. Responding to GOP critics, she said the first premiums are not due until Dec. 15.

The online, state-level insurance markets were envisioned as the new portal to coverage for people who don't have health plans on the job. But the federal market was overwhelmed by technical problems when it opened Oct. 1, and the experience of state-run markets has been mixed.

The administration said an additional 1 million individuals have been found eligible to buy coverage on the markets, with about one-third qualifying for tax credits to reduce their premiums. Another 396,000 have been found eligible for Medicaid, the safety-net program that is shaping up as the health care law's early success story.

For many Democrats, concerns over the cascade of website problems has been compounded by the focus on Obama's misleading promise that Americans who liked their health insurance plans could keep them under the overhaul. But millions of people are receiving cancellation notices. They have plans that for various reasons don't qualify for the law's "grandfather clause" protection against cancellations
And Obama has been heralded as the greatest leader of men ever along with being the highest IQ ever! :laugh2:  :laugh2:. I guess a teleprompter jockey can not manage one sixth of the U.S. ECONOMY IF HE CAN NOT EVEN MANAGE A WEB SITE ROLL OUT!! Just more proof the Dems haven't a damn clue about how to do anything except give stuff away free TO BUY VOTES and DESTROY THINGS.. NOT EVEN 30,000 NATIONWIDE. :cheer5: -Tyr

Don't get too excited, their incompetence has nowhere to go but up. The Republicans need to be keeping all of their broken promises at the forefront; keep your health insurance, keep your doctor, premiums go down $2500... Focus too much on a website which theoretically can get fixed then we'll lose the larger message that ACA sucks far more than just technical difficulties.

It was around 105,000 total between the state and federal exchanges, but still nowhere near what they need to float this Titanic. The Dems new talking point is that the 5 million who have lost their insurance so far would have lost it anyways..."insurance companies did this all the time before the ACA".

Exactly how I feel about it. The news programs that focus on the Web site issues are ignoring the truly important problems with Obamacare.

I admit there is some truth in that. We, the Republicans should hammer this entire law and force its repeal. The problem is we Americans aren't going to do anything about it until after we suffer greatly and maybe not even then. Sad but true because the Tea party hammered this issue for years AND BARELY MADE A DENT. The American people are too lazy, too apathetic and often too damn asleep to act. Any other President would have been totally destroyed by now for doing what Obama has done but we see him there unscathed other than low approval ratings---which actually mean nothing. The dem party and Obama agenda continue to roll right along. I'm telling you people this great threat to our nation will not be solved by the very people in charge that lead the destruction effort. Its bigger than them and comes from far more powerful outside forces. I am convinced the snowball has rolled too far downhill now and only a revolution/civil war will stop the agenda being pushed now. Certainly pray that I am wrong but I see the handwriting on the wall. The two choices now being offered are civil war or socialism and since civil war(the most terrible type of war) is so abhorrent socialism will likely be the choice. The real people in charge didn't spend well over a billion dollars just to put in an ego driven dumbass for nothing. They will get their "several hundred billion pounds of flesh" and there is ample proof of that by Obama being elected twice!! This man engages in open treason and nobody bats an eye or does a damn thing about it. So telling me it will get fixed by the people that brought it about is not convincing at all. They need the young and healthy to sign up as well though.

It all falls apart if only older people with pre-existing conditions sign up.

This is the governments way of going to true national health care just like Europe.

Everyone will have to join and those who can afford it will also buy private insurance so they can see a REAL physician and get timely care.
