Obama on pot: 'I don't think it is more dangerous than alcohol'

President Barack Obama says he views marijuana as a "bad habit" and "a vice," but no more dangerous than alcohol.

“As has been well documented, I smoked pot as a kid, and I view it as a bad habit and a vice, not very different from the cigarettes that I smoked as a young person up through a big chunk of my adult life," Obama told The New Yorker's David Remnick. "I don’t think it is more dangerous than alcohol.”

The president acknowledged marijuana is less dangerous than alcohol “in terms of its impact on the individual consumer."

"It’s not something I encourage," Obama continued, "and I’ve told my daughters I think it’s a bad idea, a waste of time, not very healthy.”

Still, he said, "we should not be locking up kids or individual users for long stretches of jail time when some of the folks who are writing those laws have probably done the same thing.”

On the legalization of recreational marijuana in Colorado and Washington, Obama said, “it’s important for it to go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.”

Obama's support of legalization was welcomed by pot advocates.

“The first step to improving our nation’s marijuana policy is admitting that marijuana is less harmful than alcohol," Mason Tvert, director of the Marijuana Policy Project, said in a statement. "Now that he has recognized that laws jailing adults for using marijuana are inappropriate, it is time to amend for those errors and adopt a more fact-based marijuana policy.

But the president also said legalization is a slippery slope:

"When it comes to harder drugs, the harm done to the user is profound and the social costs are profound. And you do start getting into some difficult line-drawing issues. If marijuana is fully legalized and at some point folks say, Well, we can come up with a negotiated dose of cocaine that we can show is not any more harmful than vodka, are we open to that? If somebody says, We’ve got a finely calibrated dose of meth, it isn’t going to kill you or rot your teeth, are we O.K. with that?”

His comments were part of a lengthy, wide-ranging profile published online Sunday. Some other notable quotes from the piece:

· Obama doesn't have a son. But if he did, he "would not let my son play pro football." He then compared concussion-prone football players to boxers and smokers: They all know the dangers. "At this point, there’s a little bit of caveat emptor," Obama said. "These guys, they know what they’re doing. They know what they’re buying into. It is no longer a secret. It’s sort of the feeling I have about smokers."

· Obama on losing some older white voters in the 2012 election: “There’s no doubt that there’s some folks who just really dislike me because they don’t like the idea of a black president. Now, the flip side of it is there are some black folks and maybe some white folks who really like me and give me the benefit of the doubt precisely because I’m a black president."

· His 2004 speech at the Democratic National Convention in Boston put him on the map, politically, but critics say its theme — about Washington rising above partisan politics — was a fantasy. “My speech in Boston was an aspirational speech,” Obama countered. “It was not a description of our politics. It was a description of what I saw in the American people.”

· The president says he doesn't watch "Meet The Press," "Reliable Sources" or any of the Sunday political talk shows, for that matter. “I don’t watch Sunday-morning shows," Obama said. "That’s been a well-established rule." He usually spends them with his family or plays basketball. The worthless bastard will support anything that weakens this nation. Now he supports drug use after admitting how damn cool he was as a kid for engaging in it. This is like a child molester praising his child care skills. He doesn't care that decent people will find this repugnant because he already has his second term and his type of supporters don't have enough decency or smarts to object to it. A president of the truly dumbass people and proud of it. Every scum that voted for him the second time deserves to be punished severely IMHO.. AND I DO MEAN EVERY ONE OF THEM NO MATTER THIER AGE, SEX OR ANY OTHER DISTINCTION THEY MAY HAVE. I'd love to be able to spit in all of their faces... That section of America deserves the misery they voted for and I hope each one of them gets it in buckets full.

Are the Libertarians and evil Coloradans trying to weaken the nation as well?

Maybe so, maybe not so but they are surely pretty damn stupid. I've been around in my youth a lot of unsavory characters many into really hard drugs--every damn one of them that I knew well had admitted starting out only smoking pot ! My much younger brothers(twins) started out only smoking pot. In their fifties now and totally useless to themselves and the world they still smoke pot. Both in their fifties and neither one is a man! There isn't shat you can tell me about drugs. I've been around such people for a solid 40+ years! I've seen shat in real life you've likely only seen in movies... Really bad stuff from drug users. Many of which I had to stomp their worthless asses which includes both my younger brothers on a few occasions. I spare nobody that deserves a damn good attitude adjustment when its called for! Nobody == not family, not best friend , nobody. I lost my best friend back in my twenties because he got one he had coming. Its called justice and honoring ones principles. --Tyr

Maybe they should do it here. We have a huge problem with alcohol fuelled violence and coward punches here. People being hit at random by violent drunks in our streets.

Legalize Pot.

What you think will happen,
1) Lazy pot smokers get more lazy.
2) Public smoking?
3) ...?

What I think will happen,
1) Add a new type of product to cause lots of jobs/cash.
2) Less drug related crime.
3) Lazy pot smokers will run out of rallies to go to.
4) People will refer to this as the 'second prohibition'

Perhaps we should go back to banning alcohol then.

CDC reports excessive alcohol consumption cost the U.S. $224 billion in 2006 (http://www.cdc.gov/media/releases/2011/p1017_alcohol_consumption.html)

But..., but....jafar. How can that be? Not long ago. YOU typed words here that insisted how wonderful, and safe it was for you to live there in OZ.

Make up your mind, will you? Which is it? Which lies do you want us all to believe?

Gateway drug you say?

Statistics show most drug users start with cigarettes:

Results showed that those who had smoked cigarettes were more likely to use illegal drugs. For all age groups combined, the 65.8 percent of participants who had ever smoked were: seven times more likely to have tried marijuana; seven times more likely to have tried cocaine; 14 times more likely to have tried crack; and 16 times more likely to have tried heroin. The results were even more startling when the statistical evidence was sub-divided by age groups. Associations between smoking and illegal drug use were significantly stronger for young people. For instance, people ages 12 to 15 who smoked cigarettes were 44 times more likely to use crack, compared with only a twofold risk in those 50 or older.http://www.jhsph.edu/news/news-releases/2000/smoking-drugs.html

so should tobacco be illegal? It leads to crack and heroin.

so should tobacco be illegal? It leads to crack and heroin. Well, get right on that banning cigs campaign. I do not smoke and never have. Never even tried. Was too damn smart to pick up such an addiction. Did once have a 7 year love affair with pain meds after getting comfortable with them due to a motorcycle wreck I had that summer. Chunked that just like I said I could and never went back. My oldest brother bet me 500 bucks back in 1981 that I couldn't do it. Of course I knew he wanted me to win but I needed the money right then and wanted to prove I could do any damn thing I set my mind to. Bet was I quit for 30 days he pays me 500 bucks, if I start back anytime after that I pay back to him that money plus 500 more. I never went back. Also have NEVER failed at doing anything that I truly set my mind to do. HAVE DOZENS OF WITNESSES TO THAT FACT. No brag just fact.. Instead of banning crap so a new mafia can make billions black marketing it why not just start executing the hardcore drug users and pushers? China did that long ago and saved their nation. I believe at one time they had over 70 million opium/heroin addicts. The Emperor had millions killed. NO BIG DEAL OBAMA DOES OBAMACARE THAT IF NOT STOPPED WILL KILL MILLIONS IN THE FUTURE AND HE IS HAILED AS A HERO. I STILL CAN NOT FIGURE WHICH ONE HE MOST WANTS TO BE --STALIN OR MAO.. Get on the bandwagon , killing millions can be praised and glorified if one propagandizes it right! Just ask Obama.. -Tyr

Lol. Joining the ranks of countries like china, Iran, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Pakistan .....real beacons of freedom and justice. You're a crackup man. By your reply I believe you got the point. We aren't like them and that means we have the problems that freedom brings. We also have the greatest governing document ever written by mankind. You know the one Obama usurps on just about a daily basis. Obama pushes us towards that more in his first four years than the accumulated efforts of all the previous presidents combined. Notice he goes along with this new drug legalization policy . If he was against it he'd just issue an Executive Order stopping it. See how that works? The dictator betrays what he is for by not issuing decrees to stop it or any of his strong admonishments against it. When you see him take no action to stop crap like this it means he is for it. And he is for it because it further weakens and divides this nation. That theme is so obvious in his actions I am surprised you fail to see it. And no I am not calling for the bastard to issue an Executive Order rather I am making a point about what he is truly for.--Tyr
